Check in was smooth and the room was surprisingly quite nice. The amenities were on the spartan side, but got the job done. I like the walk-in shower as it's quite efficient. The work desk in the room had plenty of power outlets and USB ports. Also of importance is that the bed was quite comfortable. I had dinner in the lobby bar which had a limited menu, but was surprisingly tasty and had a number of healthy options. Breakfast was served in the restaurant and I was impressed with the quality of the buffet which was highlighted by an omelette station which gladly accommodates my request for an egg white omelette...with fresh egg whites. Overall, a very pleasant stay and I would absolutely return if I'm ever back in Koln.

You hop off your train, walk down a hall and there's the front door. It doesn't get more convenient than that! The hotel is no-frills but very comfortable. The room had just enough space for our bags. The bathroom was small as is the norm in Europe but it was clean. The shower was stained and needed to be replaced but while we were there (in December 2012), there were lots of renovations going on in the common areas. We saw them putting in new carpet on the stairwells and repainting the hallways, so I'm guessing the entire property was getting a refurbishment. Even so, the room was just fine and very comfortable. The only issue we had was when my husband went to open the room window to let in some fresh air...and the ENTIRE WINDOW FELL OUT OF THE FRAME and onto his head! There was nothing but a window-shaped hole in the wall! Luckily he was able to catch the window and pop it back in! It was scary, though! We were glad it didn't fall and shatter into a million pieces. Again, perhaps the hotel has been renovated but I sure do hope management plans to replace or at least recaulk the aging windows! We had a great view of the cathedral (literally steps away) but be warned that you will be woken up very early by VERY LOUD chiming church bells. It's charming but startling! Great location and just about everything you'd want to see in town, including great shops, bars and restaurants, is within a 5 - 10 minute walk. The hotel offers a very small 24 hours a day snack menu and there's a taxi stand 10 steps outside the front door. The location is what makes this hotel a superstar! It's budget and no-frills but still a good value.

We booked a standard suite, but were upgraded to one with an extra 1/2 bath. Some of the suites have a traditional decor, and others are more modern (ask for "the Hanseatic Wing"). We preferred the more modern decor and the staff were happy to oblige us. Overall, the staff was wonderful: friendly, helpful, and professional. We were always welcomed, and any request or question was responded to quickly and professionally. The staff elevated the hotel and turned a really good stay into a great one. Our room was spotless, and very nicely appointed. There were tons of closets and more than enough towels--no skimping. The shower was not just a rain shower head, but a deluge. It was the best shower that we can remember having used in a hotel, which is saying quite a bit. Breakfast (included in our rate) was a full buffet with the usual museli, meats, cheeses, pastries, etc plus a menu for eggs and French toast type items. All were prepared well, served elegantly, and in a comfortable and well appointed room. It was generally faultless. The hotel's location in Köln can't be beat. It is around the corner from the train station, and across the street from the Dom. The entire historic portion of Köln and the shopping district is within 15 minutes walk. The rooms I had were always quiet, although the hotel lies at a bigger street. What I especially liked was that they had a kettle at the room with soluble coffee and tea bags. Great for a relaxed evening at the hotel room. Staff is friendly. I didn't check the spa area. Breakfast was good, and is a little bit above average - compared with most business hotels I've been to (they usually do have the same prices, around 90/night). They also feature some organic products (like simple cheese, long-life milk and two types of cereals) - and the usual, vast selection of common breakfast - eggs, mushrooms, breat, cheese, salmon and so on. Ah, and they do have a nice selection of loose tea leaf. And eggs benedcit.. although there is no vegetarian option without ham :( They have an extraordinary good coffee machine at breakfast which does produce proper milk foam. not so common in hotels (any hotels, i mean). nice as i'm used to third wave coffee quality. The overeall cleanliness is good - but strange to me was that one night two of my towels had small yellow/brown stains, and another night my bed sheet had some let's say colored spots on it too.

I had do not disturb sign on my door, but I receive a knock and subsequent enter at 10 am. I ask them to leave and think nothing more. I leave an hour later, making sure my do not disturb sign is in place, and leave for a walk up the Köln Dom. When I return my sign is removed, things in my room moved around, i had actually washed a shirt which was then hung from the window. The hotel itself is good, can't deny that but don't enter the room when you're asked not to. I put the sign up rather than use the safe - luckily nothing happened, but, come on...

Rooms and sanitary are simple but functional, user-friendly and, above all, clean. Only staff member we encountered during our stay acted nice and friendly to us. Very good price to quality ratio and all you need for a short stay. Without doubt a great option if I ever plan to visit Cologne again!
