Also, unfortunately, they were doing work in the building while I was there, which woke me up early every morning. It seemed to be only temporary, so shouldnt be a problem. The hotel is actually located on several floors of a building and it almost feels like you are in the guest room of someones house, which is cozy. My room was nice with quite antique-looking furniture. The beds were comfy and they offered nice down pillows and duvets which was good since it was snowy and freezing outside. Breakfast is offered from 7-10am and has a really nice selections of meats, cheeses, breads, jams, hard-boiled eggs, cereals, yogurts, and fruits, as well as coffees and teas. They serve it in a cute communal room with a nice man who helps serve everything. The only real drawback to this hotel is the location. I was staying for work, for which it proved very close, but if you want to be close to the city center or anything else it is a bit far. True, the tram line is right out front, which is good if you dont mind taking the tram, but it is a fairly far walk which you would not want to make through the snow blizzard I just dealt with. On a recent weekend getaway to Gera, we opted to go the route of a Ferienwohnung, as it would be…read moremyself and my fiance, plus his mother and her husband, and we wanted accommodations that included a kitchen, etc. I didn't have any say in where we stayed but it didn't matter much because this place was great, and very inexpensive (€20 a person, per night, plus €1 per night for sheets). Basically, it's a small apartment on the top two floors of 3-story home. There is a kitchen (with fridge/freezer, oven, stove), a bathroom (with bathtub and shower), a big living room area, and three bedrooms (2 downstairs and one open loft-style attic bedroom upstairs). There's also a nice backyard area where you can sit outside on warmer evenings - unfortunately, in our case, it rained most of the time we were there. The decor of the apartment was a bit uncertain, in that every room had its own theme sort of, but nothing completely consistent throughout. Still, it was simple and tasteful, and most of all, clean. The house is also in a quiet neighborhood, with a great view out over the Geraer Stadtwald. We attended a wedding in Untermhaus, and everything (the wedding, as well as downtown) was easy to access, either via a short drive or a 3-4 km walk along the Elster. My only complaint is that the website lists WLAN. Knowing that, I brought along my computer and deadline work to do while out of Berlin for four days. Unfortunately, when we arrived, the owner told us she hadn't gotten around to setting it up. That's all fine and good, but to that I simply say that you shouldn't say a place has certain amenities that it doesn't. Oh well.

Those staying at the Pension can eat their meals here, and visitors like myself can enjoy the Schnitzel, the nautical atmosphere or the draft choices at the bar.

Much better comfort in the big cities like Munchen or Berlin. Terrific meals, great value, big portions. The bar is loud and fun at night. Nobody here spoke English, so communication with the staff was fun. The owner is very very friendly, as are most (but not all) of the staff. I'd probably stay elsewhere if I had to return, but this was right down the street from where I wanted to visit.
