Great hotel! 99€ a night seems like a steal in this prime central location on the Puerta del Sol, where everything is walking distance, or a cheap metro or taxi ride away. PROS: -Large room and bathroom, by European standards. -We got a room in the back, so it was very quiet at night. -Friendly staff -Clean overall, though a tad bit dusty in some forgotten parts. -They let us check in a few hours early. -Walkable to almost everything, including the Royal Palace, Reina Sofia, The Prado, Plaza Mayor, and tons of shopping and restaurants. -Our original British Airways flight got canceled, so we arrived a day later, but Moderno only charged us for 3 of the 4 nights. We didn't even have to ask, nice! CONS: -The graveyard shift workers might not speak English. I tried calling at 4AM Madrid time to attempt to warm the hotel of our late arrival, but the man answering the phone didn't speak English. I called a few hours later, and luckily the next employee did. NOTE: If you're an American and its your first time in Europe, you might think its a 3 or 4, but Moderno is actually very nice for a European hotel in a central location.

Right outside of the lobby looking toward Puerta del Sol.

No frills rooms, but clean. Awesome location. Hard beds but oddly comfy. Would have gone 3.5 but cannot give 4

Would NEVER recommend this hotel to anyone. Overly-controlling and disrespectful hotel staff. Extremely disappointed.

Also wasn't sure of the location - the main museums are at the other end of Gran Via - a half hour walk. However once I got over the decor and color scheme - dark greens, beige and salmon colors - the furnishings and fixtures are actually good quality and modern. Standard rooms however are very small. Only one chair. Bed is comfortable with crisp cotton bedding and shower excellent but for two people the space is a bit cramped. We had a second floor room with a small balcony facing the front (only the second floor floor rooms have balconies) and with the French doors there's a bit more light making the room seem more cheerful. Fridge, safe, electric tea kettle are good to have as well. Breakfast is good, they change the pastry types once in a while. It's not automatically included in the room rate but cheaper if you include it when booking. The area has lots of parks and green spaces. Sabatini gardens right across the street. Walking distance to a couple of metro stations. Carrefour Express store in the next block. Nice local restaurant Loredo around the corner. It is a half hour walk to the main museums near the other end of Gran Via - Prado, Thyssen, Sophia, as well as the train station Atocha - so might not be the most convenient depending on what you plan to do in Madrid. However metro is easy and cheap to take so getting around is not a problem as long as you are near a metro station. We've used all three nearby metro stations - plaza Espana is the closest, Principe Pio is second (connected to a huge shopping mall), and Opera near the theater a bit further has some more nice restaurants.

As of now 10/18/2025, construction is on going and the noise is unbearable at the 12th floor. Before booking your stay, , please inquire about the on going remodeling and Avoid it for now until they are done. We always stay here at Melia and is our favorite hotel due to its location but this time no one informed our agent and they did not let us know about the construction activities when they booked our rooms. We were awaken with jack hammering noises, ear deafening and wall vibrations etc. Many thanks to carameltrail.com handling our reservation. They were able to move us to the other Melia Hotel to save the vacation / holiday trip. Thanks as well for the years of private tours and booking our hotel accommodations. We loved the cold cucumber water and candy snacks in the afternoon after we had a busy morning and went back to our room to freshen up. A nice touch, cool detail. Staff was friendly, perfect English to accommodate our struggle Spanish. They sent us chocolate covered strawberries, currants and champagne as a honeymoon gift to our room, very sweetums. The location being next to the Ventura Rodriguez metro stop is incredible. We did not pay for the breakfast since we were looking to try different breakfasts around the city. Indoor pool is a cool amenity but we did not utilize it this trip.

Mercado de San Miguel was only about a 12 min walk away and Gran Vía, Museo del Prado, and the Reina Sofía Museum were all around a 20 min walk which felt like nothing because the city is so beautiful to explore on foot. We actually loved walking because it ended up being the best way to stumble upon amazing tapas bars and hidden gems we never would have found otherwise. The staff here were also super helpful. We only took a taxi once on our first day because we were running late for our timed reservation at Museo del Prado. After that, we walked everywhere! We stayed here for 2 nights and were especially happy because our rental car from Sixt was conveniently located just around the corner from the hotel like literally about a 2 min walk away! Super convenient if you're planning to explore beyond Madrid like we did. We also had a badass view overlooking the beautiful plaza in front of the hotel such a vibe! The nightly price is very reasonable once you factor in how central and accessible this hotel is to everything. We saved so much time and transportation costs just by being able to walk everywhere. 10/10 would absolutely recommend!

We got a suite, which is one bedroom, one bathroom with kitchenette and sofabed in the living room. Our suite was non-smoking, but someone in the hallway had obviously smoked, and we could smell cigarettes pretty much throughout the hotel. The suite was fine but hardly luxurious. The bathroom was large, and the shower had good water pressure. The beds were comfortable. There were two televisions, but the one in the bedroom did not work, and the maid they sent up to help us was unable to make it work, even for local channels (and there was no plug for Chromecast). The pillows were pretty thin, and the towels were scratchy. Being March and rainy, the rooftop lounge was closed, but I can see how that would be a lovely place to watch the sunset in the evening. We did not have breakfast in their buffet, but in the afternoon, the breakfast room is open for free coffee and snacks. There's a Carrefour Express a block down the hill, and we went there to get fresh orange juice, fruit and yogurt to start our day instead. Would I return? Maybe. The location was great. The staff was very friendly and helpful. But I did not like the lingering smell of cigarette smoke, and the room was barely ranked as mid-range in decor.

Started with us having to change rooms upon arrival from a long flight because the bath tub didn't work properly. It wasn't an easy process since they tried to convince us to "just take showers instead". Er... no. We are tired and sick and we paid for a room with a working tub. Nobody offered to carry our bags from the start and they tried their best not change our room but we stood our ground. In the new room the bath tub also doesn't work properly but whatever we were able to make it work manually in order to have a bath full of water without leaking. The bathroom has no towel warmer, the bath is super slippery and dangerous I almost slipped twice even tho I was using the safety mat provided by the hotel which poorly fits the tub. Ours is a very outdated room and it's honestly the WORST bed I've ever tried to sleep in my life, my husband and I are not big people! We are tall but not wide, we can't barely fit in the bed and it's hard like a table!! Tho the service was great, the food at the bar was not good, nothing we ordered tasted fresh, even tho we ordered local dishes, it just doesn't feel like a 5 star hotel at all here. I stayed at intercontinental hotel in Porto march of this year and the experience was completely different. I'm so disappointed and feel like I would have had better sleep, saved my $ had a more comfortable stay at a Hilton or even a Marriot courtyard but now it's too late and we have to suck it up because we only have a little over a couple more days here in Europe. My advice: don't stay here!
