After spending four days in Lisbon and two days in Coimbra, the Pasteis da Nada's that I ate at breakfast here were what finally overdosed me on them. Delicious but very rich after eating at least one (usually more) for six straight days. I'd definitely consider staying in this hotel again if in Coimbra.

My arrival @ Hotel Quinta das Lagrimas was entering through a set of iron gates that had to be opened on the inside to allow us to enter the estate. After entering we drove down a drive towards the hotel/estate where a gentleman in a suit waited for us & greeted us as we pulled up to the the Hotel/Estate. He greeted us and brought all our luggage up the stairs into the entry foyer where 2 people sat checked us in gave us a brief history of the estate before it became the hotel. It was at the Quinta that in the XIVth-century Prince Pedro and Inês de Castro lived their forbidden love affair. Legend says that it was here that Inês cried for the last time, while being pierced by the daggers of the killers sent by King Afonso, Pedro's father. Ines was the of Portuguese decent & the lady in waiting & the mistress of Prince Pedro (heir to the throne). Pedro & Ines had 3 children together before she was killed by assassin's sent by the king who didn't approve of their relationship. The Hotel is beautiful but somewhat tragic history as Ines was killed here. It's a beautiful estate but a bit isolated from the town of Coimbra but within walking distance. It was cool to experience this estate but a little a sad history.

I used to play a video game called Moon Patrol when I was a kid, and this bed reminded me of that landscape. Turns out it was some sort of extra feather thing that was added to the mattress. We were so tired by the time we went to bed, we didn't really explore this until the morning and the place looked full, so we did not call to the front desk at 11 at night to try to sort it out. Not to mention, we had already opened up the suitcases, etc. Our room was supposedly one of the nicer ones, so this was particularly disconcerting. When I brought it to the attention of the staff in the morning as we were checking out, they looked at me like I was crazy and basically said "oh. ok. we'll tell housekeeping." WTF? I showed them the picture on my phone, and still nothing. It was a really astonishing reaction in what is supposed to be a five star hotel. The interior of our room was also tired, and in need of a refresh. Yes, the building exterior and gardens are lovely, but again, the first rule of hotel club is friggin comfortable beds! I'm cool with quirks like no elevator (pack or select your suitcase accordingly, due to stairs), but get the basics right! And if you don't, at least offer something to compensate--even if it was a discount at the attached spa--which would have been helpful after sleeping on that crappy bed. The most outstanding thing was breakfast--which we were pleasantly surprised about after reading someone's review slamming the breakfast here. We loved the breakfast: all kinds of juices, fruits, meats, cheeses, breads, sweets--and all in a lovely setting. We really couldn't have asked for more. Also, this was the one hotel that had a mini bottle of port and two pastels de nata waiting for us in the room, which was nice. There was also ample parking, though not lit at night, even though there were light posts. ??? Wouldn't likely stay there again, but rather at a place on the other side of the river we found while exploring Coimbra: Sapeintia Hotel. That looked updated, fresh and lovely from walking by their back patio and front of the hotel.

I found the people working here to be brusque- but maybe they're overworked. It seems like a hotel that's cutting corners. That said, the location on top of the hill is pretty nice. I hope they update the hotel- as it's obviously a nice location. They seem to take in a lot of large tour groups- so they're catering to a lower common denominator . I'm not a fan of Coimbra- I never want to go there again, but I don't hold that against the hotel.

The grounds and gardens of this hotel was incredible and the best I've seen at any propery. My wife and I got lost exploring this historic hotel and gardens for two hours exploring, just taking our time enjoying it, WE LOVED IT. We booked a Spa Room in the Spa Wing which is the newer addition to the hotel designed by a very famous Portugesse Archetict. Stunning building, room was very comfortable and nice. The room does need an update, room seems to be suck in the late 2000s/ early 2010s. But still felt very nice, spacious and luxurious. The balcony was our favorite part with a view of the gardens and pool. The pool was awesome, Olympic sized pool. Cabana and pool side chairs are available for free and they have food and drink service which was phenomenal. We had a great lunch by the pool and the girl working there was great and helpful. Overall, this place is just incredible. To sleep where Royals slept once is just the cherry on top for me. If you stay here make sure to read up on the love story Iñes Castro and Pedro I of Portugal. Really this is an incredible place and worth every penny to stay here. Luckily this SLH hotel is now available to Hilton Honors Memebers so I took full advantage and used 80k points for a two night stay here. Wifi in my room was clocked at 22 mbps through google speed test ...which I have found is fairly good when you are traveling. We love this place.

The stony gate opens on a charming winding path, flanked by an abundance of flowers and trees that immediately make you feel welcome and at peace. At the end of the driveway stands the house, a villa dating back to 1580 that has kept its charm intact through the centuries. Our hosts, Vitor and and Helena, were waiting for us and showed us to our room, giving us a little time to put the bags away and refresh ourselves. There was a great attention to the latest anti-Covid measures: everyone was wearing masks, there was sanitizing gel in every corner and we were also provided with shoe covers to use inside. Needless to say, everything was spotlessly clean. We were led to the back garden, overlooking the huge swimming pool and the countryside. Under an arched porch, we sipped freshly made lemonade with mint and some homemade cookies, while our host wrote down our info and gave us some tips concerning local restaurants. We were then given a tour of the property, that is impressive. The house, embellished on the outside by a towering bougainvillea and lovely flowerbeds, has been kept as it was with the addition of modern comforts. The walls are covered in azulejo tiles, the furniture is mostly antique, the wood floors are shining clean with beautiful, strategically placed carpets scattered about. Our room was a little jewel and we really felt as if we were stepping back into the 16th century. Two windows overlooked the lawn and small gifts, including the delicious cookies and cakes, water and locally grown fruit, had been left for us on the table. The bathroom was modern, with a wide, comfortable shower and a huge double sink. Local ceramic and flowers, as well as a variety of luxurious towels and bathrobes, awaited us. Adjacent to our room was a small sitting room with a wardrobe and, on the other side of the corridor, a huge living area with an inviting fireplace, a billiard table and, last but not least, a wall sized panel of hand painted and gorgeous azulejo. The attention to every small detail was stunning! The rest of the property was just as charming and incredibly well kept. We visited the chapel, no more in use but still elegant and solemn, and the surrounding land, where organic fruits and vegetables, grown on the spot, then reach then the guests' table. Vitor was a knowledgeable host, proud and passionate about his place and his activity. Breakfast was an unforgettable experience too. We were given the choice of eating inside at the huge dining table, surrounded by antique furniture and ceramic, or outside under the porch, overlooking the countryside and Coimbra. We opted to sit outside and were welcomed the following morning by a veritable buffet. Coffee, tea, muffins, ham, cheese, yoghurt, cereals, fresh fruit, jam, butter, freshly made scrambles eggs, coffee and teas ... you name it! But the highlight was certainly the bread, freshly baked by Helena - who also gives baking lessons, by the way. There were several different kinds of bread in the basket, warm and soft, it was impossible to eat just one roll. Helena also bakes the cookies and the cakes that tempt you wherever you walk inside the house, so be warned that you will put on a couple of kilos at least. The property is in the countryside and is very quiet, but it is actually a few minutes away from the city of Coimbra, so you have the best of two worlds: you are surrounded by relaxing greenery, but in less than fifteen minutes you can reach museums, restaurants and shops. Coimbra is a beautiful city that has a lot to offer and Quinta do Regalo is an ideal place to stay: you will be in touch with nature, pampered by two very attentive and kind hosts, and, at the same time, be near all the places you want to see. I chose the latter, and I'm *pretty* sure that's how we ended up with food poisoning the next and final of only two full days in Coimbra, and missed the Roman ruins entirely. But even without that, the sandwiches here were also just way *better* than the other place I had the same style sandwich, not to mention wine the other place didn't, so I really wish I'd just gone here twice, I dunno what I was thinking! While I was here, I had: An excellent legume and meat soup. A whole bunch of it, delicious and filling, though I definitely could have used without there being a bunch of tiny bones in the meat to sift through. A simple but extremely good pork sandwich. Rich, succulent, crispy pork, great fluffy bread, and that's basically it. (Also great, pretty spicy garlic hot sauce, if you like that sort of thing.) Their chocolate mousse, because I couldn't resist. Great chocolate mousse, though it was... just mousse, and a *lot* of it. I didn't really need that much. It was very rich. Delicious, though. (Probably best shared with someone.) A glass of the house wine - one thing I particularly loved in Portugal compared to the US, how much cheaper drink pairings were at restaurant, especially when it came to house wine. Pretty great wine, especially for how cheap it was. A finishing digestivo from one of the several bottles of aguardiente they carry, which they also appeared to not have charged me for, intentionally. Another thing I love about Portugal - aguardiente *does* feel like it makes a good digestivo, much moreso in my opinion than any amaro. Not including the aguardiente, everything else, soup, sandwich, dessert and wine, came out to 16 euros. I should've just gone here twice in two days, lol. It is clearly a very local spot - English was spoken, but... barely. Entirely enough to communicate, though. Only a handful of tables, but word clearly isn't out about Coimbra and how good some of the food is here yet, cause I was the only customer in the restaurant that afternoon, which is too bad for them, but was relaxing for me! To be fair, it was also the off-season and drizzling - I hope they get more customers in warmer months.
