More like a 2.5-star really…read more.. Pros Great location right next to Toledo cathedral -- one of the most beautiful and amazing cathedrals I've ever seen. We arrived in the morning before check-in time, but friendly owner Manolo held our bags for us and delivered them to the room himself so they were waiting for us when we returned later in the afternoon. The room itself had some character. I liked the brick wall behind the bed. I'm sure it was a very historic building. There was a nice rooftop terrace. Price was reasonable. We had a partial view of the cathedral from our room. Cons My wife and I both thought breakfast was weak. It would have been nice to have some fresh fruit and higher-quality juices. The shower was broken. It was the kind of shower where you're supposed to be able to place the hand-held shower head into a holder so that it becomes a fixed overhead shower. But the overhead clip wouldn't hold the showerhead in an upright position. So we had to rest the showerhead on top of the faucets, where it was easy to accidentally switch the temperature between scalding hot and icy cold. Not a fun way to shower. And the shower cubicle itself felt very insubstantial, plastic and cheap. We had a modern LCD TV and a wall-mounted air-con unit, but no remote control for either one. Not a disaster, but pretty annoying on both counts, especially with the A/C since we could only turn it on or off manually and couldn't find a way to adjust the temperature. The old-fashioned door locks are a nice period touch, but they made it kind of hard to open and close doors, particularly the bathroom door, in our hotel room. As in many Spanish hotels, the room is small. There was actually some nice built-in storage for clothing, but the room itself had only two single beds pushed together - no chairs for sitting and relaxing, no desk for working. We were just there overnight, so it was workable, but it would have felt cramped for a longer stay... The view of the cathedral is nice during the day, but the cathedral is not lit at night (not the hotel's fault) so the view isn't nearly as nice at night. I know Spain has a budget crisis and is trying to save money, but I do think it would be nice if they lit the cathedral a little -- at least until 10 p.m. or so. They could even have floodlights switch on for a few minutes every 1/2 hour or something like that if they are trying to save money on electricity. FYI on Toledo -- Nice town for a day-trip or overnight stay from Madrid, but do be aware that it is as hilly as the guidebooks say and that the layout of the city is incredibly confusing. We had pretty good luck finding our way around most of Spain, but we got ridiculously turned around in Toledo, especially when trying to find the monastery where El Greco is buried. Still, if you are a fan of El Greco, Toledo is definitely worth the trip and the cathedral is a work of art in itself.

Most of the historic places are closed, but you get a better sense of the city at night. This Hostal has a great location, next to the Cathedral, but high enough in the city to have a great view of the area. Toledo is a very hilly city, with twisting and tight streets. Its an historical city, with a number of sites. The staff is friendly and helpful to Americans. It is recommended in the Rick Steve's guide book, and we ran into another couple that selected this hostal for the same reason. The hostal has a theme for each floor (Jewish, Christian, and Muslim - since Toledo at one point had all three of these religions in the city at one time), we ended up on the Jewish floor is a themed room - the money changers - not the most PC name. The room had a view of the Cathedral, with a large king size bed, not the best pillows, a small TV and private bathroom. The bathroom had a shower that was smaller than a cruise ship shower, even thought the bathroom was larger room. There is no elevator, but the stairs were manageable. The breakfast was a great value, on the 2nd floor, with a terrace that provided a wonderful view of the city. So for one night, it was a good value, in a historical city.

Breakfast was decent but the fried eggs were cooked perfectly one day and then way undercooked the second. Consistency would be nice so at least you'd know how to correct your order. Our door slammed really hard unless you remember to soften the swing, which you don't always do coming back at 2am. I'm sure our neighbors didn't like it (and sorry!) Hmm, I had mixed feelings about this hotel. We decided to book because of its stellar reviews on…read morebookings.com or one of those third party travel websites. The pictures of the view looked fantastic. I had read before on tripadvisor that you can easily walk to town within fifteen minutes. We are both pretty fit young adults and had trouble completing the walk from the hotel to the city center. Maybe you can get to the outskirts of town within 15 minutes but it takes about 30 minutes waking to the main museum. Also, when it is 80+ weather, the walk is even more miserable. We were stupid enough not to get a taxi so we ended up hauling our luggage from the train station to this hotel. Long story short, we both were really tired after the walk. The hotel in itself is pretty old. The floors were really gritty so I recommend that you wear flip flops or shoes. They did not provide enough blankets. At night the weather gets pretty chilly in the 60s but we only got a thin layer of blankets. I ended up turning the heater on but then it became too hot so I woke up in the middle of the night to turn it off. Not having enough blankets disturbed my sleep. Lastly, I had mixed feelings about the hotel staff. There is a female and male front desk person. The woman is terribly nice and helpful. The guy, however was not. The day that we checked in, we asked the woman if we could leave our luggage with the hotel after we checked out the next day for a couple of hours. She said without hesitation that this was not a problem. The next morning, we went to the office to drop off our luggage. We got the dude who looked peeved that we were going to leave our baggage w him. He first said, you don't have a car? Then he said, "we don't have room for you to leave your luggage here." I told him what the woman had said the day before and he looked annoyed that we were asking him to do this and reluctantly said that we could it next to the cabinets in front. He said that he was mostly there but sometimes stepped away. He did not give us the assurance that our baggage would be watched or taken care of. Instead, he gave us the impression that he would not be responsible in case our stuff was stolen. But what could we do? We had no car. For the rest of the day, I felt uneasy worrying about whether or not my stuff would be gone at the end of the day. Had he been willing and exuded confidence that our stuff would be watched (like the other employee) I would never had worried. Btw, when we went back to pick up our luggage, he retrieved them from a spare hotel room. What happened to not having any space? If you have a car and can deal w a little dirtiness, this place is for you. It is affordable and you get a spectacular view. The positives were that the view was breathtaking just like the pictures listed. The breakfast was also pretty yummy. They offer plenty of delicious seasonal fruit and provide yummy pastries. The restaurant faces Toledo so it is absolutely a gorgeous view.

It is a restored building, originally from the 1300's, and they did a wonderful job renovating it into a modern hotel. Very clean, quiet, and the rooms are fairly spacious for a European hotel room. (Some others we stayed in were about as small as my closet.) The staff was very friendly and spoke English. (We tried our best to speak Spanish, but thankfully we didn't have to here.) There was free WiFi and an optional breakfast that we purchased. For breakfast we had a traditional Spanish tostada which was crusty fresh bread with tomato puree, olive oil, and manchego cheese. We don't eat ham, but usually it comes with ham. The freshly squeezed orange juice and cafe con leche were fantastic too. My only complaint was that the bed was too firm for our liking. We found this to be true everywhere we stayed in Spain. I guess Americans like softer beds.
