There is mold in the shower, along floor tiles, between the sink and countertop. The carpet feels nappy and disgusting. The smell is something awful. Kind of like sewage or bad plumbing. Since we were only staying 1 night prior to a flight departure, I didn't bother with switching hotels or complaining. Wasn't worth my time. But I dissuade you from booking this hotel as there are a million better choices out there. (Try Hotel Catalonia Plaza Mayor. 15min away. Same price point and much nicer and cleaner. Showers even have towel warmers built in.) Read the reviews about smell and noise. They're not lying. Walls are super thin. Gym is a joke. Everything feels old and worn. Like REALLY old and worn. I'm no princess and can appreciate a good deal but as I lay here writing this review, I'm freaked out about bed bugs and black mold. This hotel needs a MAJOR renovation. Sorry. Many reviews had stated that this hotel is in an excellent location as it's walking distance to many of the main sites in Madrid and is in a really nice neighborhood. It's located in the Salamanca area of Madrid, a ritzy neighborhood with great shopping and restaurants, but also within walking distance to all the major sites. In terms of location, I think we couldn't do any better than this! It's right across the street from Retiro park, within walking distance to plaza mayor (the city center square) as well as the el prado museum and reina Sofia. The restaurants in the area are also top notch and there's endless shopping right around the corner. In terms of service and staff, the hotel was amazing as well. The front desk was super helpful and booked dinner reservations and excursions for us such as the flamenco show. Everyone was nice and welcoming. The rooms themselves were also nice. The only slight criticism is that the toilet area and shower area are somewhat exposed. The doors are glass and see through so if you're looking for complete privacy in your room, it's a little inconvenient (although when I was perusing several reviews from other hotels, they had similar complaints so I wonder if it's just a European thing). Bedroom was better than many standard hotel rooms. The bed was large (queen plus?) with plenty of space around it to move, decent size closet and separate built in drawers. Living room was comfortable for six people to socialize. Juliet balcony (large enough to stand on) looked down on small plaza and looking sideways down to the boulevard bordering the Prado and Botanical Garden. Another reviewer wrote about a poor experience at breakfast, however our experience was the opposite. Buffet offerings included a variety of fresh fruit (kiwi, orange slices, pineapple, melons, etc.); bread (croissants, pain au chocolate, etc.); sliced meats (Iberian ham, other hams, smoked salmon etc.); various hot and cold cereals; pastries (apple tart etc.) as well as made to order eggs, including omelets, bacon, sausage. The staff for the breakfasts was outstanding. Very friendly, helpful and very efficient. We found the breakfasts to be exceptional. Similarly, the front desk staff were very friendly, and knowledgeable. They recommended "Salmon Guru," a fantastic bar an easy walk from the hotel. The only thing we found to be less than amazing was that the lobby was quite small. Big enough to wait to meet someone, but it did not invite lingering. I cannot comment on price/value as this was part of a larger package booked through a Spanish travel agent. En suite bathroom and half bath off the living room were clean, modern, spacious with excellent water pressure and temperature.

I was given a choice of spaghetti or penne and I chose penne. The penne was perfectly Al dente but I was disappointed that it was dry and the shrimp were so tiny and very few. We, however, enjoyed the club sandwich that came with fried potatoes. The croquettes were crispy on the outside while being soft and saucy on the inside. It was heavenly. Our server was wearing a suit. He was friendly and attentive.
