This June we will be staying at Posada el Volador for the 6th time. We live in Tempe AZ and stay here every other summer for around 3 months. This summer it will be 4. We have use of the kitchen so we can shop locally and cook in the hotel. We found this hotel after we had stayed (briefly) in another one that had bedbugs.
When the family the owns the hotel travels we travel with them. Last time we all went to Oaxaca for over a week.
As for what to do there my recommendation if you like to walk or hike this is the place for it. There are LOTS of waterfalls and rivers nearby.
Note the average rainfall is 110 inches so bring raingear with you
I found someone local who loves to hike and he speaks English. He put himself through grade/high school in Texas and then moved back to Cuetzalan to be with his family. He is often in front of the church shining shoes. His name is Jaime.
There is a town (Zacapoaxtla) nearby that has a market day on Wednesday. It is an hour ride on the local bus. Get there early and
wander the town way up in the mountains. Shop and eat. The bus ride is spectacular too!
How I found this town: In Phoenix there is a local show called "In the Americas with David Yetnam". He was there in early October when the town has the big saint day celebration. It looked amazing. And it was.
