We had paid in advance and notified them of our late arrival. They said it wasn't a problem. It…read moreapparently wasn't, because they decided not to clean the room. When we arrived, tired in the middle of the night, the woman at the desk was surly, handing us our key card, and pointing at the elevator. It was winter and we had been on a long train to get there. We discovered paw prints leading to the bed. At least we hoped they were paw prints. They were a white substance that was smeared in places. We didn't take our socks off. I called down to the desk person who said she would look into it later. Next morning, with lights on throughout room, we had another surprise. There was a dark brown substance smeared and then dried in some places on the wooden cabinet enclosing the heater. At breakfast, another female employee said she would consult her colleague about it and the paw prints after we left for the day. After breakfast, we met the maid coming out of the room next door so I thought I'd notify her of the issues. She said it wasn't her doing, that it was a filthy, filthy room, and told me to ask for the first floor, I.e. change our quiet room for street side, where the rest of the guests were staying. She looked at the stains and said that her colleague would have to deal with them. He came in and looked at the paw prints, declaring them not really a stain. He decided we should move too. I told him we didn't want to move since we were leaving the next day. He said there was nothing he could do. As we were leaving for the day, I notified the desk clerk again that we wished to stay in the room, but could they please just clean it? When we came back, the room was clean-- no paw prints, no mystery brown ooze. That evening, we met one nice employee: a young man who asked if we'd like tea or a coffee. We said we didn't know they had tea or coffee. He said they provide it free to guests afternoons and evenings. He was quite pleasant, and the proximity to train station is convenient. However, the train goes right by Marienplatz too and the hotels are quite nice, at least they aren't in the middle of a prostitution center. If you're dead set on being close to the bahnhof, go with the Royal Hotel. The owner is great and thoughtful. Ask for a quiet room though. If you're looking for a non-smoking hotel, the Royal is better too. City Hotel had smoke on a non-smoking floor.
