Such a mix of good and bad! The good: Beautiful old historic building with elegant lobby, beautifully appointed restaurant and views to die for. They have a museum of 10 huge, historic cars from 1918 to the mid 1930's. They have a wonderful outside pool, overlooking the Fjord. All of the public spaces are 10 out of 10. The bad: I get it; it's an old historic hotel, but that doesn't excuse these blunders when it comes to the hotel room. They have NO backup roll of toilet paper. This is an issue when you run out! Also, we ran out of tissues. No back up. There were no drinking glasses in the bathroom, or in the room (only a coffee cup). The one window swing open from the bottom, but won't stay open. I had to use a coffee stirrer to prop it open. The only USB port in the room were wobbly wall mounts and I found didn't charge my phone overnight. There are NO live outlets that aren't switched off will wall switches, which mean no charging from then unless you leave the wall switch on and turn the lamps off manually. Also, all power is lost when remove your key card, so no charging when you leave the room. No paper or open to make notes. Most if these oversights have nothing to do with being an old hotel. They obviously have pride for the hotel and public spaces, nut put little effort into room usability. read more

This is a beautiful hotel, and I really enjoy the surroundings and everything that is going on. They have a nice bar and a beautiful lobby that makes outstanding and refreshing drinks. The restaurants are good, a little pricey, but very good. There is a car museum in the basement that is free to check out, and I recommend if you're in the area you should definitely take a peek. read more

We ordered off the menu and had a wonderful meal. Steaks prepared perfectly with a nice French wine recommended by staff. Service was was excellent and the view from the dining room is one of the best in the world. read more

Exterior perception is yet again one of a dated infrastructure but the amenities and location delivers (and some). When doing the research prior to coming here I was pretty doubtful about this being an acceptable location but when looking at all the other options in town or with the village it was pretty clear this was the best available. there is a hot tub adjacent to the spa pool and both are truly offering the most amazing view I've seen while soaking besides a few memories in Banff that I just cannot get out of my mind. Cruise ships bombarded the fjord below us but the lively atmosphere still cannot be tainted when you stay at this location. It's strange because there are tour buses and huge buffet's that are mediocre on the food quality and service delivery but then again there's nothing wrong whatsoever with room service the bar menu or of course the views in the room sizes. The Union Hotel in Gairanger, Norway was a wonderful place to stay. The setting was magnificent: mountains and a waterfall (view from our room, if you open the windows, you can hear the roaring stream) in the back and a Fjiord in the front. The whole property is beautifully landscaped. The hotel also has a great history, which the owner was proud to share with us while describing his antique auto display that is located on a lower floor. The smorgasbord breakfasts were great - excellent food, almost fine service. Bonus for the heated tile bathroom floor. Update: Earlier, I asked the bus boy, where I can find hot chocolate. He said, they didn't have any. I asked a 2nd server, and pointed to me where it was. My hot cocoa was already cold, by the time I reached my room, I was bringing it in our bus trip, and I keep it in my travel mug, which usually last me all day long and are kept warm most of my trip. I dumped it in the toilet, and hurried & refill with hotter mix. Now, I'm happy again! read more

Spectacular views. Friendly and accommodating staff. Enjoyed breakfast each morning and ate lunch and dinner there a couple times. Dinner buffet is good, but the dessert bar is exceptional. Got to try what they cal the Norwegian National Cake. Rooms were comfortable. Nice soft beds. Best part though is the view. read more

This historic hotel has a little bit of a Shining vibe with old architecture and decor that hovers over the mountain above the fjord. The vibe definitely evokes a feeling of the good old days of European tourism. The cafe inside is a nice spot to grab a craft beer from the local brewery and there's ample seating outside for nice summer days when the sun is out, overlooking the town and water of the fjord. read more
