Once thing is certain: their bread and croissants (which I used to adore in the past) are not anywhere as good, fresh and crispy as they used to be anymore and rather feel a day old. I tried it on several different days throughout my stay and continued to be disappointed. Will try the competition (Baeckerei Voland) next time who happen to sell their fresh and crispy baking goods until 9 am in the train station. PREVIOUS REVIEW What a blessing to finally - after missing it for many years in the USA - finding effortlessly some of the best bakeries/pastry shops when visiting good ol' Switzerland. The Steiner Café - with multiple locations - is just one of many. But the bottom line is, the breads, the selection of breads and rolls, and the pastries are sooooo wonderful and delicious. Why does it seem impossible in the USA to replicate such palate elegance, avoiding excessive sweetness and going for quality/freshness rather than size. Single purchases or full-core brunch - all equally seducing. Leaving a tear behind...!

Very cute cafe in the middle of Zurich. It is a great place for coffee or breakfast. We went there…read moreon a Saturday morning and it got busy very quickly. The tables are small and it may not be easy to have all your food on one of them. We had eggs (over easy) and an omelet with Latte and hot chocolate. The food was great and came out at a good pace. It was a great experience.

Yelp Review 2026 #47:…read more Cafe & Conditorei 1842 is "Zürich's oldest cafe". This place is a conditorei (has a sit down area to enjoy pastries and sweet baked treats) and not a confiserie (take away truffles and candies). They claim to have the best hot chocolate and I would have to disagree. They do have good desserts to pair with their hot chocolate. The building its in has been around since 1824. The bakery opened in 1874 but the cafe didn't actually open until March 2019 so, the name is misleading. They have indoor seating and also patio seating in front or in the back. They have smoothies, milkshakes, matcha, cold brew options, sparkling wine options, ice cream, patisserie items, and brunch food. You have 6 options for their hot (or cold) non-alcoholic chocolate: classic, with marshmallows, with whipped cream, with chili flakes, with a shot of fresh ginger, with a shot of espresso; or 4 alcoholic hot (or cold) chocolate options: rum, amaretto, Bailey's or Grand Marnier. Passion Fruit Panna Cotta: Nice balance of bitter dark chocolate and tart Passionfruit. The panna cotta was creamy and soft. Dark chocolate holding everything together. I love Passionfruit and chocolate combo. 4.5/5 Chocolate Mousse: You can't go wrong with anything chocolate in Switzerland. This has white chocolate, milk chocolate and dark chocolate, and cocoa nibs at the bottom. Great creamy texture. Pillowy like marshmallow. 4/5 The Classic Hot Chocolate with Whipped Cream: Underwhelming. I've had better hot chocolate somewhere else in Zürich. It's a step up from Swiss Miss. 2.5/5 The Classic Cold Chocolate with Whipped Cream: The same as what was mentioned above but the cold version which is lukewarm. 2.5/5 Service was good though.

Why couldn't I have found this place earlier? If I had found it the day I got into Switzerland, I'm…read moresure I would have eaten my way in Luxembergeli (it's basically a macaron). It's right by the airport. (And by that I literally mean inside the airport). So, it's super convenient for souvenirs while you're traveling. They sell them by the weight and oh my goodness! Each one is a bite of heaven. We ended up buying almost twelve or so and worried that we might have bought way too many. But, we quickly learned there's no such thing as too many. They are simply divine. Just a little bit of crunch and gooey deliciousness. My favorite one was the Rose with Strawberries. (at least I think it was strawberries... chances are it could also be raspberries!) But, honestly, you can't go wrong with any of the options. Another unusual one I enjoyed was the Strawberry Rhubarb. The only thing I would warn you about is watiting to long to eat them. They're sooo good the first day or two, but get stale if you wait a week. So eat up! While you're here, don't forget to pick up some truffles too! Those are just as good as the luxembergeli, but luckily last much longer. I didn't try any of the unusual flavors, but all their chocolate was the bomb. The white chocolate truffles were absolutely my favorite of all. I wish I could say I'll be back soon, but I guess I might not be able to come back. But, anytime I'm near I'll definitely try to come back soon. For now, I might just have to settle with international delivery for special occasions.

There is a store on one side with all kinds of chocolates and goodies. We didn't order anything and stepped in the cafe side. We ordered their hot chocolate, the server noted they were famous for it, and it was awesome. Delicious and the best hot chocolate I've had. It's a premium place and pricey . . . like everything in Zurich and this time it was worth it. Great service and a memorable experience.

Eric Baumann was making macarons before they were in, before Ladurée was in Zürich and Sprüngli released their new Deluxe Luxemburgerli. He's one of only three Swiss members of the elite confiseur guild "Relais Desserts" and macarons are simple a part of his repertoire. My favourite macaron is the chocolate macaron, made with a Grand Cru couverture from Felchlin (Trinitario fine flavour cocoa beans from Madagascar, 64%). But the vanilla macaron also really impressed me: Creamy, cool, soft vanilla butter cream - wonderful! The flavours are classic, but there also some seasonal variations. Macarons aren't his only noteworthy product. His assortment of patisserie is on the same level as Vollenweider and Honold. His bread is also very popular. All pralines are made with the finest Grand Cru couverture. The gianduja hearts, piped ganache coated in cocoa powder and sabayon pralines are particular favourites of mine! Just one slight criticism: Every now and then (especially towards the end of the day) the service isn't quite as knowledge or friendly as Mrs. Baumann or Mr. Berchtold. Otherwise their service and product knowledge is excellent. For more reviews and photo reports, please visit: http://www.dessertblog.ch

It's the best bakery in Zurich without the snooty cliental waiting in a long line. I was sent here by the 'Ass Bar' after a long conversation over sweets.
