Ros gave me a great haircut. I barely had to explain to him what I wanted; he just knew somehow. My haircut was so good that I believe it led me to meeting the love of my life that night. She kept asking me "Who cut your hair?". We would go on and fall in love with one another because of my amazing haircut. Ros was so good that I started to suspect the love of my life was only dating me for my barber. I would later find out that she was only dating me to get closer to him. I've walked by this place a thousand times by now but finally stopped in when my barber went MIA. - Cool staff, check - Throwback vibe, check - Watched a Snoop Lion documentary while waiting, check - Excellent haircut, check - An English bulldog in a plaid bowtie, HELL YES, I mean check Note, the bulldog belonged to a customer but it was just hanging out while the owner was getting a trim. Have gotten haircuts here and have no complaints. But if possible, book in advance ask for your haircuts to be done by Ros. He's an old-school certified Italian barber that nails haircuts and handles with care. Everyone else is super spotty (hit or miss) so ask for Ros and avoid the walk-in bingo read more

I have to agree with Jesus F. Totally over-hyped and poor service. The guy cutting my hair talked with another employee about how he was in a hurry to leave. Then went on an expletive-filled rant about his girlfriend. I'd been in once before and the same guy cut my hair. He had done an ok job and had taken his time. This time, however, you could tell he was rushed. He ran the comb through my hair so quickly he'd scrape the scalp. He quickly sent me on my way and when I got home, I noticed that my hair was lopsided. I would have noticed when I was at the shop had he given me the time to properly look at myself. But no. Cool guys, terrible haircut. Went there yesterday enticed by their walken sign. They were busy but I didn't mind waiting for an hour to get a haircut, they had live music and boondocks saints on TV, it's a cool experience. I asked for short on the sides and long on top, I have had the same haircut since high school , not too imaginative but no one managed to screw up until now. The barber completely screwed my hairline by somehow making my forehead square by not following my hairline (for an example, google Jamie Fox forehead and place that on a white guy), and messed up the sides with a terrible fade as well. I only noticed when I got home, truly worst cut of my life. I returned and was offered a free follow up service when my hair grows back. I was also contacted by phone with apologies and once again an offer of free touch up to make me look presentable. Good customer service. I decided I won't go back, I have literally the easiest haircut, if they can't manage that for 30$ plus tip then I dont feel confident having them handle my hair. On paper, these guys are great. They were friendly, quick to offer a drink and seem to have a sense of humour ("We accept Walkens)... So it might be worth the extra bucks. Unfortunately, since they will not take appointments, I almost missed my cut, shave and beard trim before my wedding. We stopped in and there were a few people ahead of us. We needed to run a 15 minute errand and they would not save our spot in line. Very disappointing! We ended up going to Imperial barber shop on Slater. The entire reason you book an appointment is... so you don't have to wait. I booked an appointment, arrived, and, when my 4:45 chair opened up, a "regular" walked in off the street and was seated by the barber for a cut instead. I don't nor won't waste time to write bitter or petty reviews. However, whilst agreeing, it is important to acknowledge those who are "regulars" at any business, it is less than considerate to treat your coiffure as a playground to makeover the next local legend of follicular flowdom. You do not provide a unique service and certainly will never receive my business again. This could not be stressed enough, I will figuratively, vocally, and if required, literally target defecation upon your business and model repeatedly, consecutively, and without restraint. We called in advance as my wedding party was looking to get cleaned up the day before the wedding. We didn't book the private group event that includes photos and other bonuses, just haircuts in succession. We arrived at opening, to no barbers in house. Had to wait 30 minutes before one barber was called in. The barber sat us down and got it done as fast as possible (15 minutes for my wedding cut and beard trim) I've been multiple times prior and expect at least 30 minutes on hair, plus a style. The barber did not style any of our hair, and was hammering through as fast as he could. When it came time to settle up we found out there was an additional $20 added to each of us. One guy got a beard trim only and he too had a $20 charge added. We got shafted, and I'll never go back. There is little respect given to the paying customer. I reached out to management following our visit and now 4 days later haven't received a reply. No barbers in for a pre booked group of 6 No styling or attention to detail, easily worst cut I've received at HOB. $120 extra on the bill for worse service than a first choice. I went to Hair Fellas for a wedding this summer and I would recommend them of HOB any day of the week. read more

Been here several times. When they first started, they really put an effort on customer service - good haircuts and beverages/ good atmosphere to alleviate the pain of their long wait times. However, the past couple of times they've had different barbers who were not as good as the ones I've gotten in the past, and the wait times have been extremely long. The last time I went, they told me the wait time would be 45-1 hour long, so I sat there and waited. 2 hours into it, while having to listen to them play the most vulgar music lyrics they could find and listen to them curse at each other, I decided to leave. Disclaimer: Didn't get any services. My boyfriend needed a hair cut. This place looked super cool so we walked in. Put his name down for a cut as they were super busy. The guys at the counter were the rudest dudes I've ever encountered. Acted as if we were putting them out entering the premises. This place is overhyped and terrible. Sure it's the new place in town and there's a buzz, but be warned: I received the worst haircut of my life from them. The barber - this young and boisterous guy - managed to cut my hair at different lengths (even with the clippers - how is that even possible?), messed up all the lines, and shaved a bald patch on one side of my head. The damage was so bad that it couldn't even be properly fixed. Honestly, if I wanted this kind of poor quality, I would've gone to First Choice Haircutters. This was a fun experience. You hang out in a very male oriented space, you drink a beer and you get your hair cut or your beard trimmed or your shoes shined or all three. I was satisfied with my haircut and would definitely go back. The staff was very friendly, especially the tattooed gentleman who greeted me as I entered. (Tattoos seems to be a theme there). All in all a good barber shop. Prices were very good too as it was $30 for a cut, $30 for a shave ($50 for both) and $5 for a shoe shine. Awful service, Terribly rude. Came by 3 times. They always seem to be closing up early. My past visit, I unfortunately made the barber upset because he would have to stay maybe 5 minutes after closing to fit me in (even though i drove 30 mins through downtown traffic to get there). My bad : / The other time they closed up 40 mins early, no explanation (I came by around 5 saw the line, asked how long the wait was... told them id be back around 7... only to be told they decided to close up early. Good quality work and they have an online booking tool (just doesn't work for same day appointments). I've had two different stylists, both of which were top notch. My only complaint is the inconsistency of customer service (sometimes you are offered a drink, sometimes your not - totally depends on if they are chilling with people or not) and, frankly, the attitude of the lady that answers the phone (which is why I like the online booking tool). They guys were all really great to deal with and they provided excellent service for me, considering I basically walked in off the street with no appointment. Their system for taking clients may work for the market walk-ins, but is ridiculous for anyone outside the vicinity. They don't take appointments and the guy working the counter was a dick when he explained that they had no space even after we called and tried to make a reservation and he said to come in! He showed little regard for the fact that we drove in and paid for parking and further than that- losing a young client who would have kept coming back. (My 13 year old has been there twice and hadn't stopped raving about his awesome haircuts.) Your lousy service made the kid feel rejected and he never wants to go back! I'd never let him go back anyhow. After reading other reviews I see it is common that customers feel offended by the poor service. I purchased a gift card here for my boyfriend to get a hair-cut which is 30$ and I wanted to get enough on the card for the cut, tax and tip so he wouldn't have to pay anything. The guys rung me up for the haircut and I told them to add 15% on to the price for the tip and they told me that they would charge me 40$ in total because people normally leave them more that 15%. Ummmm...i'm pretty sure that is not how tips works. The store does not usually have in a say in what I decide to pay as a tip especially considering 15% is a resectable amount. They were so obnoxious and full of themselves and think they know best about everything. They gave me a look until I just agreed to pay the 40 because it was boyfriend's b-day the next day. I booked an appointment with Ross and the donkey working the front counter tried to send me to another barber. If you book with a certain barber then put the customer with the barber. Maybe its time for the owner to hire some new front staff that know customer service. Maybe play some normal music and not that bullshit they had playing. I just wanted to let everyone know about my experience at House Of Barons. I had walked by this place many times and thought that it looked like a very professional barber shop, and that I should give it a try. Do I ever regret that decision! I could tell right from the start of the cut that my barber was completely inexperienced. I couldn't have been more clear with my request - I wanted a subtle fade on the sides - not too high, and a fade in the back. I specifically requested that he not use the clippers too high up the sides. Apparently he had something else in mind as he did the exact opposite of what I requested. My haircut is totally uneven, my side burns were not even touched, and he used the clippers for 90% of the cut. It was quite literally the WORST HAIRCUT I've ever had. To top it all off, it cost me $30. But the place looks cool... I made it evident that I was not happy with my cut both during my cut and while I was paying. The barber did apologize to me at the cash, but that's about it. I was still charged the full price for a cut. I will never return, and I suggest you don't even try this place out. A message to Yelp - I actually checked out reviews on this place before I went, and only saw two positive ones. Upon further examination, I found that there were actually 4 terrible reviews, but these were 'filtered out' of the main page. I'm assuming that's what will happen to mine as well. That kind of goes against the whole point of this website... Because this place is right next to my office I was willing to pay an extra $10 for a haircut, but the service is terrible. They won't take appointments, always have a 30-40 minute wait, but warn you not to walk off for more than 5-10 minutes. While attempting to get a haircut today I watched as 5 employees (?) chatted amongst themselves and wandered in and out. Tomorrow I have an important meeting with a client and decided that a trim and *perhaps* a shave would have me feeling my best. I made an appointment a few days in advance at House of Barons, a cool looking place on Sussex that I had walked by many times. When deciding on either getting a beard trim or a shave I had warned the barber that my skin is pretty sensitive and about the important meeting tomorrow. He reassured me that the whole shaving process is very soothing and would be fine with my sensitive skin type and it would definitely be an experience I would enjoy. What happened wasn't soothing or enjoyable; the barber carved up my face like a week-old Thanksgiving turkey. During the whole experience I told him it was burning a lot and he kept saying "your skin looks fine". After I got out of the chair I went to the toilet and I had cuts on my 5 different areas on my face and patches of stubble in random places (top right cheek, Adam's apple, under my chin, under my nostrils). My fade wasn't even close to a fade and my side burns are ridiculously uneven and he also cut the back of my neck and caused me to bleed. It was unfortunately one of the worst experiences I've had at a barber. I paid the guy taking care of the front, who quickly took my money without asking me how the experience was and when I told him that the shave was actually a really bad experience, he looked quickly at me, gave me money back and then ushered me out onto the street where he apologized. I didn't appreciate being taken outside to talk about the issues, especially since it was nighttime, he couldn't see all of the problem areas or what happened. It felt more like he was trying to keep other customers from hearing the conversation than really listening to my service issue. My skin was raw and scabbing over so we agreed that trying to clean up the shoddy shave would aggravate my skin more. He gave an excuse that the barber was new and was supposed to tell customers that (which he didn't). He said he wanted to give me another haircut for free and said he would make sure that I would be taken care of by one of the Masters (who are really talented). I declined, saying that the business should make sure EVERYONE is taken care of by someone talented. Novice staff shouldn't be allowed to work alone, let alone upsell services they can't deliver on. I wish I would have just told the barber to stop after I felt stinging and burning on the back of my neck and just got up and left. His reassurances that my skin was fine were not accurate and after I sat up and took a look at my face it was a real shock, but he conceded it was only a little irritated. Now I have to go to the meeting tomorrow scabby and blotchy. I won't be going back and advise others to be wary unless you have seen the staff member's work on someone you know first. I'm sure that there are quality staff who work there and do quality work, but my experience tonight shows that novices are left to their own devices and management knows that their work isn't always satisfactory, but seems more interested in damage control than ensuring quality service. (Photos attached were taken after I surveyed the damage at Rideau Centre with better lighting than in the toilet at House of Barons and on the dark street with the frontline worker). It wasn't worth the price I paid (which ended up being free). So disappointing! read more

Was visiting a friend in Ottawa and he insisted we hit up his new favourite barber shop. They do all the things a modern barbershop that wants to appeal to young guys does: a bit old school, super friendly and easy going. Offered a beer, chilled and watched some Simpsons. What I didn't like, though, was the lax attitude didn't really apply to my hair cut. My guy was distracted throughout the cut, *scalping* me three (yes - THREE) times. We shook it off and kept going. I was praying he'd hand the clippers over to the guy running the cash. The rest of the haircut was fine, but I would've preferred he took it real serious, and didn't try to make me laugh so much. Price was about what you'd expect. Pricey but won't bankrupt you. Still, give me that professionalism for a $40 trim, yeah? *scalping - misuse; when they're using clippers to clean an area up and push too hard, get part of your ear, and the hum of clippers flares up. read more

I don't ask much of a hair cut: - The back should be faded. - No visible chunks missing. - Not too short on top. Most things beyond that can personally fixed or styled at home. However, the barber messed up all three things here. - The back is clean cut, which looks weird with the tapering. - There are several parts that looks like he randomly shaved a chuck off for no reason. - And it's too short on top. WAY too short on top. Way too short everywhere really. It's far too short for me to go somewhere to get it fixed. So, they have a cool atmosphere and seem very nice. However they do mediocre and choppy work. If you're looking for a more fashionable haircut, go to imperial barbers. read more

Since moving to Ottawa some years ago (sigh, seems like several lifetimes ago), I've been searching in vain for a decent place to get my hair cut. I went to Lucas Nault a few times but didn't quite dig the results. I tried a few more places and they were either overpriced or blah. Sure, like all trends, this "new male grooming" thing (an odd blend of retro Mad Men traditionalism with some retro rockabilly punk style & attitude) arrived in Ottawa several years late (I remember reading a NY Times article about such style of places back when). In any event, I've gone twice and all I can say is that they are true professionals who take their time and do a great job. Nice guys too. Their "Walken" only policy can make it tricky. The first time I tried to get a cut there, I had to come back on two different occasions even when I had called only 15 minutes earlier. But now it's the only place I'll go. read more

Went to the preston street location for a straight razor shave with my groomsmen. We all experienced terrible and very rude service. They cared more about watching TV than about us. At one point they stopped shaving us to turn the tv up louder and all watched the tv for 5 minutes while ignoring us. It doesn't really inspire confidence when someone has a blade to your neck and isn't paying attention to you. They also butchered the shave. Cut my neck in several places. I've had straight razor shaves at other barbers who knew what they were doing and and were superior in every way. Will never be going back and I recommend other Ottawa barbers (Gray Whale, Hairfellas, etc.) read more

Signed up for yelp just to lambaste this place. The prick at the front desk made sure I'll never go. I went at 2:30 on a Sunday and they were already "closed," despite posted hours being till 4 pm, because they had their lineup for the day. That was annoying to begin with, but the front desk guy's attitude solidified my resentment. When I said I wanted a haircut, he retorted "Cool. We're closed." He then made a snide remark about the closed sign in the door. Sorry for looking up your hours ask assuming you're open when there are still 90 minutes till close. I don't know if this attitude is supposed to be cute or if this guy just hates the world, but either way i left in disgust. He only spoke when needed in order to work out what kind of hair cut I wanted, and basically ignored a couple of attempts to start a conversation. The haircut itself was fine.
