I was a student at HCC for roughly 2 semesters. I have a bachelors degree from UCF and have returned to school to pursue a masters, however, needed a few prereqs. I live in Katy, TX and am considered an out of district student, but I decided to go ahead and pay the additional fees. In my short time here is a list of how I was treated. HCC is a school that cares about how much $$$ it can make, not student success. They are good at faking it, but really they have hired a bunch of staff who view it as just a job and not a place were people are changing their lives, need guidance, communication, & support. 1. First advisor was so rude to me, she told me stop talking on the phone. I had reached out to her because after trying to get in touch with her for weeks over email, she finally responded with a generic message how to send in transcripts etc. I called and she happened to answer and was so short & rude to me. 2. I finally had my transcripts sent. The office wouldn't accept them because I had my email CC'ed when they were sent to HCC. So I spent the $15 dollars and they made me repurchase them despite the fact I never opened the transcript, it was sent from the school directly to HCC and it was official. 3. I enrolled in Anatomy 1 online course. First day of class, the entire HCC online system was having issues and half the students couldn't log in. The school sent a message to the entire staff what happened was an IT error, however, my professor still was going to ding us for not showing up to class. She said we should have reached out to IT, had better internet etc etc. IT WAS A SYSTEM OUTAGE. 4. I enrolled in Chem and had to withdrawal from a class for the first time ever in my collegiate career. The professors exams were show your work type questions worth anywhere from 8-10 points each. If you didn't get the entire thing right, your received ZERO points. So what was the point of the written exam then? I tried to talking to her about it and she said I didn't study hard enough. I studied 28 hours I clocked for her exam and she gave me a 50%, refused to explain things to me or work with me so I had to drop. I emailed the head of that dept and she didn't seem to care either. I also heard that same chem professor did the same to several students and even kicked a student out of class for yawning, giving him a zero on his exam. 5. I have attempted to set up a payment plan with this school and was told no or told I can have it broken in half. Just ridiculous. They do not care about your financial situation it seems, want to work with or help their students because unless you pay in full, you cannot enroll in other classes so your education is essentially put on hold. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY OR TIME. read more

Once I enrolled in another college I was blown away how I was being treated, complete night and day difference compared to how my experience was at hcc. I hope the experience I had last week does not reflect what my experience will be like at this community college. I came in to take my TSI test and the people in the testing center were incredibly kind and helpful. After I recieved my score I went to meet with an advisor and this is when things took a turn. The couches in this room looked very dingy and old, but I decided to sit for a minute while waiting for my name to be called. I jumped up immediately because there was a roach crawling all over the furniture. The advisor that spoke to me was extremely rude, an African man I believe last name starts with a K. It was very difficult to understand him firstly and for whatever reason he was very impatient with me and short-tempered. I did my best to remain respectful but he was a minute away from me walking out of his office. This school has the engineering department that I'm interested in and is 10 minutes away from my home but so far I am not impressed. read more

I don't even know how anyone register to this college. Nobody answers the phone. When you send a email they respond with an automated response. If the registration is this horrible I can't imagine the professors teaching you anything. I won't get to leave a review about the actual classes because I chose the community college that showed me they wanted me as a student. read more

My experience here is unique, because my university rented out rooms at this campus, for our cohort to take classes here. My first hand experience is with the staff, janitors, police, and front desk as I never had to deal with registrar or financial aid since I was a student there, but technically belonged to another university. Some interesting notes: When you do take classes here as a guest from another university your parking decal, which you put on a hangar will have your university name on it and semester you are there for. On the negative side after about two semesters they forgot and never gave us a new one again. Thankfully, no one in my cohort ever had issues with parking and the like. Staff- they were always friendly and usually had a sign the first few days (not the first semester we started though, that was confusing as we took a class at the actual high school next door, that was listed as a HCC class) stating where our university would be having class. I would usually come early to eat dinner and have someone open the door for me. By the third semester, they were left open immediately, because they got to know us well. We were a two year cohort. We never got there at a time that the bookstore was open, but we always were at the vending machines. The tables nearby were clean, though it was a pain to find an outlet. I don't think I ever did. Your food options are to literally bring something in if coming in after 4:30 unless you want to survive on snickers and coke alone. One semester one room had a roach problem. That was scary. We complained enough and got that fixed...mostly by sitting away from the roaches. Which brings me to my biggest gripe... The bathrooms were generally nasty. I mean gross, beyond gross. Always out of soap, always out of something. The janitors looked exhausted. It's like people treated these like middle school bathrooms...and you get the picture. I hated having to use the restroom here. Their restroom was a legit issue, but you could tell it was not the janitors as they were constantly cleaning it. It was the students. The only issue I have with the janitors was the lack of soap. I am confident our cohort helped Purell gain a nice profit during that time period. I'm not sure why the students do that, but they were worse than your average public restroom. Parking, staff, everything was okay minus the restrooms and roaches in that one room...which I can't remember the room number anymore. Sorry! read more

It feels as if every time you ask for help at their services, the staff gives you an attitude. The amount of time I had an interaction with these people, they all seem like they hate their job; if you do, quit. Simple. Instead of holding grudges and projecting that energy towards people who needs help. So sorry that your system apparently never shows our submissions or that you don't receive our emails even though when asked, you refuse to look up the information. The environment is already bad, and being a hypocrite towards your motto is disappointing. read more

Spend 1 hour transferring between IT and Admission office. Then when someone finally wanted to do something, they were like, " uh are you deft? I told you to wait". I have been trying to take online classes here for the past two summers. All I want is to take one class and they somehow manage to make the process as difficult as possible. My parents pay taxes to HCC so I should be in district and I am currently attending another college. Both years I have been accepted into their school, they have listed me as out of district tuition and put an insane amout of unnessesary holds on my account. Each year I meet with advisors online multiple hours over multiple weeks and they somehow manage to make it worse. For example, I met with an online advisor for the third time this year. After waiting for 2 hours just to be connected to an advisor, I basically sat in silence for 30 minutes while they searched for my transcript. By the end of the meeting I had to leave promptly and asked the advisor as I was leaving "I am able to register for a class now correct?" and he said yes. When I checked my portal later that day he had somehow managed to change my tuition to OUT OF STATE and set me up with a degree plan for the NEXT TWO YEARS but not including this summer that I am trying to register for. When I met with an adivsor from the same department the next day they told me that they could not help me because their department did not have access to make those changes. So over this school I am taking classes at Lonestar instead even if it is slightly more expensive. read more

Beware of the Early college kids who like to holler at you as you walk inside the campus. Gets really annoying because they sit outside during lunch and just act like middle school kids. I have taken a lot of classes (mostly online) here starting my junior year during high school and every once in while during the summer. I have only taken one in-person class here. Their classroom is always freezing. There is usually a group of students who would sit or stand and talk loudly. The interiors are nice. They did a little remodeling. It's definitely more modern than before. They have a fountain inside. A lot of sunshine comes through from the rooftop and windows so the atmosphere is nice. The enrollment services are okay. Sometimes bad, sometimes bearable. Can't recount the number of times I've been in line trying to turn in docs or transcripts. *roll eyes* Their advisors are informative. I never had a bad experience with them. Parking can get a little annoying. Their parking is not one of the largest and is usually filled up. read more

Although I am not a student here (I attend LSU - in an MBA program), I was very impressed with this community / junior college campus. Looks like it's new or recently remodeled. Attended a Women N.O.W. conference luncheon regarding human sex-trafficking hosted by the Sociology Club and a professor Dr. Fonge. Met several amazing people and lunch was provided by Big 6 BBQ (food was amazing btw - I will have to try them out personally). Conference room where event was held was impressive. Nice stage, sound systems, and huge television monitors as well as projector screen. Great place to host a future SuperBowl party on campus!! Parking lot was huge but obviously extremely packed. They do have a multi-level parking garage so I'd recommend going straight there from the get go so you're not searching for an open spot. Would definitely return to attend future on-campus events in the future. The Sociology club there seems to have it together as the event was very organized and no mishaps derailed any part of this 4 hour event. Very professionally handled and orchestrated. read more

I am an active duty military member. Every time I talk to any VMASS member, they are very rude and unhelpful. It takes a long time to get a response back. They also don't know anything about setting up a student that is active duty. Active duty members do not have a dd214 because we have not been discharged from the military. Yet, they keep asking for one to get enrolled. Today, I have contacted VMASS and she was immediately very mouthy and then raised her voice because I didn't fill out a form they didn't inform me about. After being on hold for a minute, she did come back very sweet and helped me out. I have also contacted the business bureau several times through email with student id number included in the email and have never gotten a response back. Over the phone, the business bureau have been friendly but long wait times. I do not have an advisor that can help me set anything up. HCC is not set up the best for online students and veterans. Update and learn more about active duty/ veterans. Also, assign everyone an advisor. One that can be easily accessed. The school should set up where students can schedule online apts with their personal advisor through email, phone, or video. I would love to apply for the dental hygiene program at Coleman but I've been attending this school online for a year now and don't see myself going any further in obtaining anything from here. read more

Took off work to drive over and spoke to a helpful advisor, but was told I needed to get approval from chair of the department, Daejan Grigsby, to take a course. I emailed her literally like seven times over a 1-2 month period, no reply, and called the department three times, only to not receive calls back and ultimately be redirected to her email. LOL. I just took a class start date was 12/14/2020 and ended this Sunday 01/10/2021 it was awful. The mini semester courses had tutoring available for the first five days of the class than they were out for Christmas break no help available and no advisors available after the first five days they are out as well for Christmas break.. The citation machine didn't work right, the financial aid wasn't available to me so books for that class were out of pocket. The Adobe acrobat was not available to me until the last two days of school after repeat calls to IT it got fixed the last two days before class ended . The instructor I had was super nice at first than turned into a Dr. Jekel Mr.. Hyde emotional and any concerns were over exaggerated and blown out of proportion forgetting text conversations and very luke warm . I take majority of my classes here at this location and I've had a great experience this far. Normally I attend Katy Campus, Spring Branch, or Coleman. I am currently taking A&P because next year I start Nursing school. The experience is horrible because every time we attend lab we have lack of equipment. It's really frustrating because my current employment scope is Peri-Anesthesia and when I graduate I plan on begin an OR Nurse and I am expecting to be able to see visuals in lab and practice in the lab. Our professor is great but she has to hunt down things we need which retracts from her teaching to us. My expectation is to learn all that I can being that I am paying for this and not getting what I am paying for. I wouldn't recommend to go here. I came here two days in a row to get some more information about the cyber security program that HCC offers. The first day I went, a counselor, with the name of David Franklin, refused to see me because I hadn't applied yet. I've gone to mannyyyy of schools as a prospect student and gotten information without applying, for the simple fact HCC isn't the only school that offers that program. It's hard enough to get into school, but when you have counselors that don't want to help, they make it a lot HARDER! If the counselors give out an attitude of unwillingness to help, what's going to make people want to go here? HCC IS NOT THE ONLY CHOICE. I came back the next day, after applying , and I seen another counselor. I had to bring my 2 year old daughter along who decided to act up, so I disciplined her. I waited forever at the financial aid office and actually signed in before these two people. Yet those people got to talk to them first and my name wasn't even called. After they were done the person behind the counter got tired and went away. They called the person that signed in after me again! There's a place outside where students can chill near the break room, very nice. I enjoyed it but I could smell a faint hint of cigarettes... I'm not sure if people smoke there too. They have some of the worst help desk representatives imaginable. The student service people put almost zero thought into the questions you ask and take every opportunity they can to not do their job. They just refer you to someone else. I don't know how many hours I spent and trips to the school I took to fix all my issues with enrollment. When I finally got into the classes, I found teachers who absolutely did not care about teaching their subject...Which is GREAT if all you want is a piece of paper and an easy A without learning anything. This college is a joke. Everyone working there has an extremely bad attitude. The system is poorly organized. They did not have a single open registration day between Summer 1 and Summer 2. I tried to reach someone and got hung up on 3-4 times, and once I finally reached the right person, they were extremely rude and refused to help me. The teachers do not respond to emails. There are so many good community college options, go to a different one. I recommend Blinn or Lonestar. I go to Trinity University currently and problems that take 2-3 weeks to figure out with HCC take them 5 minutes. HCC just simply does not care about customer service for their students. read more

The only reason I enrolled for fall 2014 is because I moved across the street & my job is down the street. Just trying to enroll & turn in paperwork, I have experienced: 1. The Financial Aid office does not open @ 9 like it states. I have a 9-5 job which I went to late 3 times just to turn in my paperwork & couldn't because staff cant be on time. 2. The Advisor have student waiting for 45 min - 1 hr. I just wanted to turn in transcripts & still had to wait for 48 min too see a counselor for 4 min. 3. I finally get in touch with Financial Aid over the phone to ask a question, & this GHETTO RATCHET staff member wouldn't let me finish my question & on top of that, I could hear her coworkers running their mouth in the background more than I could hear her. When I asked her if she could let me finish my question, she justifies her UNPROFESSIONALISM by saying she does this every semester & everyone is the same. Umm NO WE'RE NOT. I've had a great experience here at this school. Took care of my own business with no BS. The most interaction I've had with staff was due to the repeal of a SAP, and meeting with an academic advisor. If I can recall her name correctly, Ms.Williams in student services helped me throughly. The gentleman academic advisor however seemed to try and coast me along. Of course I spoke up for myself and told him he must be having a stressful day but my future is important and he needed to be more helpful. The professors I had were very straight forward. Help was always extended to students. I understand some students have not bridged the gap into post-secondary education. I feel that they could use more student advisors knowledgeable in detail to help new students transitioning in. You may encounter people who may not attend the school but from the area that hangout inside the campus. Report them to security at the front desk, they are attentive and will help. read more

Since I am a recent alumni, thought I would share my experience. Overall for the academic side, I would say that I received a great education. The professors that I had the opportunity to connect with, were very challenging. I always used rate my professors, to see how their teaching technique, fit my learning style. Trust me, I never wanted to take a professor because they were easy, I actually wanted to learn my material. Financial aid department, I really didn't have any issues with them, whenever I had a problem, it was quickly resolved. However, my low rating comes after graduation. I thought, after graduation I would get a decent job using their career services, boy was I wrong! I transferred into a great university, and thought I could off set some of my cost by paying some out of pocket. I met up with the career services on one of their campuses. It went well in my opinion. She helped my spruce up my resume. She showed me places she had a great relationship with, and how they enjoyed employing HCC alumni. I informed her I wanted a full-time job, since that will help me out with a lot, while finishing up my degree. She said no problem, and gave me list of places to apply. I applied to one and got an over the phone interview, which I felt went well, she said she would call me back- no response nor emailed me back after sending thank you follow up. The second interview went well and the woman wanted to hire me on the spot. My only problem it was for only five hours a week! I told the woman I wanted full-time jobs! Why on earth would she give me information for a job with only five hours a week! What bills will that help me pay? Thank god I looked on my own, and was able to find a nice full-time job with great pay and benefits, that fits around my full-time schedule! Not to mention I am a wife and a mom, so you can just imagine my full work load! Overall as mentioned above, if you do your research, you can get a quality education from professors that care. Just don't use the career center to look for a job! They are great at helping with your resume and cover letters, but not looking for employment! read more

Not dealing with this campus ever again. I went to ask about my financial aid and received the most unnecessary attitude from the angriest ghetto queen I'm come across in years. First off the sign-in thing was a waste of time. They gave me the whole nonsense about signing in and I was the FIRST person called. You know what that means? They were too busy eating and talking to do their job. The girl with the blue eyes was more helpful than the big bright girl but even still I can't take a black girl with blue contacts seriously about ANYTHING. Blue eyes??? Really???? Now like I said, at the time I was the ONLY person waiting to talk to financial aid. There was ONE other dude and he came after me. What the hell was I waiting for??? When they finally called me I figured I would just go in and ask a couple questions and be done. No big deal right? The way the big girl was acting you would think I slept with her and left her stranded somewhere. You would think people over your financial anything would be professional, but, naw..... Apparently I did the most evil deed by not asking about the summer semester and the fall in one sentence. After being told my financial aid was ok for the fall semester I figured I'd see about the summer too because even though I'm already enrolled in a class or two being able to use my aid would be a major help in my life. The big girl gave me the whole long speech about how we discussed the fall and I didn't ask about the summer and whatever other nonsense she shot out there. I can only assume that she realized she was being an idiot by her deciding to partially do her job. She told me something or another about not being able to use my financial aid for the summer for whatever reason (probably something she made up) . Then she says something about how going from one school to another is a bad thing. She refused to explain it to me though and only said "I shouldn't have mentioned it because now you're asking too many questions". I really wish someone would explain to me how giving a damn about my professional and by extension my personal life is a negative move on my part and how that would possibly infuriate someone who chose a job in which answering the questions of thousands is a major aspect of the position. I attempted to explain that I am working on two degrees from two different schools and that knowing how going from one school to the other would affect my financial aid is important but that obviously was the straw that broke the big girl's back. After hearing another complaint about me asking too many questions (for the record too many was three) I just explained that I didn't require anything else and that I basically was sorry for expecting a professional to be professional. Like I said, I'll never use this campus again. I'd rather just take the time to travel to the ANY other campus. Who hires these people? read more

I hear all the horror stories but I'm currently in my second semester here and have had a pleasant experience. Dr. Sandifer (spelling error?) was my instructor for my only on campus class (I take everything else online) and he was great. It was for a prep course and I'm glad to have taken his class. He really pushes you to do your best and I believe that it did prepare me for future classes (even made everything seem easy in comparison, but in a good way! Lol) read more
