Beautiful quality green built building and extremely clean. The hotel has a calming zen atmosphere that makes u feel relaxed and at home. The room was tastefully decorated and very clean. The continental breakfast was awesome. Judy, the hotel's owner, is a truly genuine soul and a very caring person. Her pleasant spirit is what gives this hotel the feel of a quaint bed and breakfast. She made my stay memorable. The hotel has a beautiful state of the art restaurant, which happened to be closed during my stay but nevertheless beautiful. The bar, Maroney's, which is attached to the hotel, is Cheers reincarnated. It's your local hometown bar where everyone knows everyone. Heather, the bartender, is a talking promotional advertisement for the hotel and the town of Howard. She makes the place! She is like your childhood best friend. Another genuine soul. She, along with the bar's regular crew, made me feel like I had grown up there. A wonderful group of down to earth folks that you would think only exist in a good book. The room and building as a whole were very clean, no complaints there. The bed and sheets are comfortable, but the pillows are fairly flat. The water pressure in the shower is incredible, but the shower curtain doesn't block it all. So, we had a permanent wet spot on the carpet just outside the bathroom door. The AC unit was incredibly quiet, we would have had no problem leaving it on high all night. Finally, breakfast was better than most, it runs from 6-10am.

Typical small town corner building completely remodeled - and remodeled well - to be a B&B. High ceilings...old time feel...nice furnishings. I loved the spacious salon / dining room. Would be nice when the fire is lit. Only thing missing, and this might be a seasonal / regional thing, is a decanter of sherry for the guests. That's always a warm touch. Our room was very comfortable. The bed was good and the bathroom - shower only - had all we needed tucked away in a cabinet. Cute faux fireplace. Kim is an attentive but not intrusive host. The breakfast for our visit was French Toast with sausage and fresh fruit. It was fine, but here is where an otherwise excellent place falls a tad short. B&Bs are more of a pampering event. Cream for the coffee should not be skim or 1% milk. Syrup should be genuine maple syrup. French Toast should be made with a dense quality bread...maybe with a sprinkle of cinnamon or nutmeg...not just plain fried because that's pretty flavorless if you're avoiding the "syrup." HOWEVER...the fruit mix was exceptional. Best I've ever had. Every single bite was heaven. Would I return? Absolutely. It was a lovely stay. Wish we'd had more time to hang out downstairs. It's just nice to sit in a lovely room. DeSmet is a very small town with seemingly only the Ingalls attraction to draw people from afar but still...there's something charming about it. The people are exceptionally friendly.

Our overnight stay was pleasant and quiet. We had seen a billboard on the interstate earlier in the day hyping their WiFi and waffles. The wifi worked very well and we had our choice of two types of waffle mix along with a pair of irons to make them for breakfast. The waffles were good but not great. A little soggy for my taste but perhaps their recommended cooking time is conservative to prevent burnt waffles. Parking is in a large somewhat shared lot with our businesses but no problem finding a space. The hotel location is right next to the interstate and a little noisy but not bothersome.

There was a bell that you could ring to get her to both locations. She had to rely on the bell as you could not see either location from the other. I felt sorry for her.
