I've been hearing about Howdy's Sonrisa Cafe for a while and finally decided to give it a try. It absolutely lives up to the hype. We split the shrimp tempura roll burrito and added tuna, and it was incredible. The fish-to-rice ratio was perfect--something a lot of places get wrong. The fish was fresh, the flavors were balanced, and the dipping sauces took it to another level. It's definitely a little pricey, but the quality makes it worth it. The portions are generous too--one burrito was more than enough for two people to share. If you're a sushi burrito fan, this place is a must-try. First of all, when my husband and I decided to come here after a Solstice Canyon hike, I thought on first glance that this was a lil BBQ spot haha (the chef/owner's name is Howdy -- I noticed the apostrophe afterwards)! After seeing the menu and reading the reviews online, we saw that this was a wonderful fusion place with the best reviews -- Yelp didn't let us down! I ordered the chicken teriyaki and subbed sushi rice for salad (the chef paired it with the most amazing seaweed salad), and my husband ordered the salmon bowl and subbed sushi rice for mixed greens as well. The salmon was soft, melted in your mouth and truly on par with the salmon I had in Japan!! The chicken was delicious as well - and the veggies paired with it in the bowl were really tasty. The seating area could use a bit more work, as I felt like the food felt authentic and a hidden gem but the prices for the dishes were on par with that of a sit-down restaurant! You order at the front and pay first, then a server brings the food to your table (if you decide to sit there). We came on Fourth of July for a little bday lunch - and I'm so happy I got to spend my birthday trying out another great restaurant! Great little fusion cafe. Right on the corner of an outdoor shopping area. Outdoor covered seating. Cool relaxed vibes, music playing. Great place to have a light lunch. We had yummy Tacos . Mine were fish with a light sauce. So fresh ! My husband had steak he said they were really good too, The gal taking our order said everyone loved these to kinds. We will be back super easy to park and a great place to just hang out. Forgot to take pictures. They also have burritos, lobster, pizza many unique items. Boy oh boy did I review wrong a few years ago, they have really up-leveled. Caring staff, very very allergy conscious, want you to eat and enjoy your meal! Generous portion sizes, and really delicious high quality food. Fun to sit outside with friends. Extremely accommodating, generous and take all your needs and requests seriously. I come here often for lunch and I'm always satisfied with my meal and the service I receive. The food comes out in about 15 minutes and it's always delicious. As a vegetarian, my favorite meals are the veggie burrito or the teriyaki bowl sub tofu. The staff is friendly and attentive. If you come often the rewards stack up quickly and this translates to money off or free deserts. If you like spicy, I would definitely ask for the salsa habanero! Been coming to Howdy's for a long time and the service and staff here are always top notch. There's a reason why it's a staple in the Malibu community and it goes beyond the food. The staff here are out of this world. You can tell they all like one another and get along. It makes it a fun experience to come here. A lot of the same people have been working here for a long time too which says something but even the newer hires are wonderful. I dined with my family here recently and we have two young kids. They can be rambunctious but are pretty good overall, just picky eaters. Thankfully we can usually find them something at Howdy's they can enjoy and will actually sit and eat. Our servers were Kim and Mario. What fantastic people. Mario was always smiling and quick with extra utensils and boxes. Kim went above and beyond to make sure we all were happy, including the kids, she even had a conversation with them about their favorite animals. I asked why she wasn't a teacher she was so good and kind to them. Way to go Howdy's for continuing to hire solid people and for providing this community with amazing food and good times. HOLY F-WORD!!! I have tears in my eyes because I just found the best burrito I've ever had in my entire life, I know that's just my opinion but in my mind it's a fact! My fiancée and I went in to Howdy's today and I was craving a shrimp burrito (reg burrito not sushi burrito), But there isn't one one the menu, so I thought I'd ask, And super sweet lady at the register said " yea we can do that for ya" And when it came out it looked like it was on the menu because it was gorgeous! Thankyou soo much to everyone that works there, The two times I went everyone was super nice. Look what the cat dragged in... Now that we had such a great meal at one of its places, you can be sure -- the rest of us will come back wanting to try other things on this menu. We had actually come in for a sushi burrito but we ended up getting as per of the picture above. If you're wondering, fresh salmon, yellow tail and seared ahi that tastes like any high-quality fish from an actual sushi place. The salmon? So, so melt-in-your-mouth good! We had to throw in the salmon poke bowl (obviously), his favorite Pepperdine burrito with organic chicken, and steak tacos. Literally everything was ON POINT, no matter what you're in the mood for. Such a win! And let's not forget about the tortilla chips with salsa--amazing. We loved it so much we actually ordered a round of salsa to-go for the weekend. Great on an omelette or breakfast burrito at home and they say it will last 3 days in the fridge (if you can keep from eating all of them before then!) On a lovely fall evening I wanted to watch a baseball playoff game at Sparky's Sports Bar in the Cross Creek Park. But it was closed for some reason. During the playoffs! What kind of universe is this???!! So as I was riding my bike out of the Cross Creek Park I saw Howdy's had a TV on. Went in and looked at the extensive menu. My slight objection to this modern world is that Mexican food is supposed to be inexpensive and a $20 burrito is not inexpensive. But forget it Jake this is Malibu. I ordered the Super Malibu Nachos con carne for $16.95 thinking there might be too much and I'd have to carry the leftovers home on my bike. But they came rapidamente and they were just right. I ate some Howdy's nachos and had one of those Topo Chico fizzy mineral water drinks and watched the Yankees. Excellent nachos. Hot and loaded. Nice atmosphere. I randomly found this place walking around Malibu, when I visited for the first time. I got in line, not knowing what to expect. The employee guided me through the menu and highly recommended their lobster sushi burrito. I ordered it along with one of their fresh juices. The burrito was incredible, I've never found anything comparable. Every time I'm in Malibu, I stop by to eat there. I brought many friends and all loved it. Their guac and chips is also really good, the guac is very good and the chips are actually really stood out. I recently had to stop eating gluten, and they were able to accommodate.
