But the other week, with time to kill while my bicycle was being repaired, I went into Books Unlimited in Donaghmede Shopping Centre, albeit against my better judgment. And I have to admit that I was mildly surprised. Mildly pleasantly surprised. Not schocked; they hadn't added a SF wing overnight or anything. Books Unlimited is still the small local bookshop that sells manly school textbooks. But what they did have, and perhaps they've always had it but I've never really noticed it before, was a pretty big second-hand book shelf. Admittedly, these second-hand books were a good deal more expensive than in your local charity shop. Vincent's sell paperbacks 3 for a euro sometimes, but nevertheless, three books for a tenner from an actual profit-making bookshop still isn't bad going. And Books Unlimited have a lot more range than any charity shop I've ever been in. But still the ubiquitous Thomas Harris and Frank McCourt books. Has anyone ever noticed that? I guarantee you, go into any shop that sells second-hand books and you're bound to find 3 or 4 copies of 'Red Dragon' and 'Angelas Ashes'. Try it yourself. So yeah, if you're around Donaghmede, give Books unlimited a quick go.

The store has several floors with a large selection of books. It has lots of Irish literature and Irish authors as well as fiction, travel, cooking, children's box and lots of others. Prices are comfortable to other bookstores. The staff were very helpful in finding books and recommending books. I would highly recommend a visit if you are in Dublin

The books are new-book prices so they are a bit expensive but just seeing the huge selection of books and the huge store is enough. I ended up getting one book as a gift for a friend and a Hodges Figgis tote bag for myself. The people working here are friendly and knowledgeable. Fair play to Village Books for trying to diversify Irish readers' tastes. There is a fairly large selection of cards in store, of varying qualities, but definitely something here to suit all tastes. The children's and teenagers' book sections are quite extensive and there is also a considerable selection of fantasy books. Village books has quite an array of children's toys as well, so I imagine this would provide an excellent means of distraction for kids who are dragged here by their desperate-for-a-good-read mothers. Village Books has a pleasant, unassuming atmosphere and browsing is not frowned upon.

As we walked by, we saw a sign that said, "Secret Book & Record Store", with an arrow pointing into a deep narrow hallway with posters of advertisements covering the walls. These places are the great finds in Dublin. At the end of the hall was a large room filled with used books, vintage vinyl & new releases including CDs. The store was a frezy of customers flipping through the bins of vinyl to find that one great band from their past. I did find a few old 80s punk albums but still on a quest today to find an original GBH or Exploited cover.

The books on sale are many and varied, I was expecting a lot of Irish interest and books that wouldn't appeal, how wrong was I!? I asked, without much hope if there was a copy of Terry Pratchet's 'Nation' on sale, I have been looking for it for about 4 months and every time I check in Hughes & Hughes and Easons and any number of others it is sold out, not here however, there is one copy left with my name all over it (well, I wanted to make sure no one else took it!). It also has some marvellously complicated special offers. When I visited, these included "Buy one item of clothing and get 20% of the second item you buy, and 30% off the third item you buy" and "Buy a jumper and get 33% off a pair of trousers". However, I assume that golfers are well able to work these figures out, skilled as they are at working out their scores and handicaps and whose turn it is to get the next round. Don't plan on bringing any children in buggies, incidentally. There is a notice on the door advising that for safety reasons, they are a no-no. In fairness, it's for their own good. They are sitting ducks in a shop where swinging a club is positively encouraged.
