HSBC have really gone downhill in my opinion. The only reason I'm giving them 3 stars is because they provided me with about a year of temporary work in the late Nineties/early noughties and I got on quite well with my managers there. I've just closed my account with HSBC and gone to a building society.
HSBC are supposed to be an international bank. They used to be really good for the procurement of unusual currencies but they kept me hanging on the phone for an hour and a half when I tried to order some African currencies for a cruise and then did not come up with the goods.
In 2011 I paid AUD 30 to wire some money that my partner gave me for my airfare from the HSBC branch in Perth, Western Australia to my UK HSBC account. It's bad enough that I had to pay to do this but this year the HSBC Perth branch would not execute this even for a fee. Outrageous! St George's Bank, an Australian bank in Perth who I'm certainly not a customer of said they would wire this money for a fee so much more helpful.
One used to be able to speak to HSBC in the middle of the night via telephone banking but no more.
They are generally quite efficient day-to-day but HSBC have got too big for their boots, are not living up to their reputation as a useful international bank and I've closed my account. read more
