This means that any member of the general public can attend. This is not the case with all lectures and sometimes tickets are required so check out the website for details. Some of the finest speakers in the land have spoken here since the oil-drum-shaped building opened in 2008. Recently Judith Butler, arguably the most famous feminist thinker alive, spoke here. If you do come you will not only get a to witness history in the making with up-to-date lectures on critical and cultural theory, but you will also fin a community of interested scholarly types to discuss your own thoughts with. You can also get a tea and coffee and sit in the open plan modern seating areas to chat, read or just think. A really great experience and one of the best things Manchester has to offer.

Everything is new and there's loads and loads of rooms you can get lost. New building, time to stick all the students in here, that's why you often get a jam of people on the stairs which is often annoying. I often wonder what would happen if there was a fire, ultimate chaos. Other than studenting, University Place houses a huge canteen refectory area, serving up the school dinner types on the school dinner type tables. There's also a separate more smaller cafe part too offering pizzas, sandwiches and hot and cold drinks. At the front you'll find the visitor centre if you're ever feeling that extra inquisitive about the University and what to read literature about why you've chosen one of the greatest University's in the world blah blah. Overall one of the few offerings that I'll praise the Uni of Manc for.

However the…read morearea of Leeds surrounding, the knowledge and level of teaching the staff are at and the campus's just put Leeds Beckett in first place. Being manly situated at the Headingley campus I get the joy of walking through Beckett park daily and I just love it, especially in the summer. Although the on campus shop shuts fairly early it's a great place to learn.

I started attending Infest Festival in 2007, before the halls and the union were "done up". It's always been a great space for events as the space for live music is large enough to big crowds and there are several bars and different areas (if you don't fancy being crushed down the front of the stage). In my opinion, since it has been changed (2009/2010) this space is even better for a event. The "arena" area has a generous staging area and a bar at the side, the "upstairs" area has another bar, seating areas and plentiful toilet facilities (including unisex loo's) and the sports bar has lots of areas to sit down and a well-stocked bar. The bar is very reasonably priced! I don't go in term time, but during the festival this year 2 pints of Cider was £5.60 (which is great for a festival). There is also a second bar/dancefloor area towards the rear of the venue called "The Escape bar". I imagine this is used for smaller events or a secondary room during student nights. Again, this has a generous amount of seating and a reasonably sized bar. The halls have been changed into a town house layout for "The Green" (although the traditional "Arkwright Halls" are still standing at the moment). The houses in The Green are broken into groups of 3 and are named (to aid you find your house for the duration). Each house has 12 bedrooms (mostly equipped with a bed which is bigger than a single, but not quite a double), 2 toilets for each bedroom floor and a large kitchen and living area (with another ground floor toilet). The accommodation is very modern and is equipped with a microwave, hobs, sinks and several large fridge freezers to store your consumables. Each house has a small outdoor area to the back, which is great for socialising. You can also access the other houses in the blocks garden, so you can have a LOT of people outside at one time without getting under each others feet. The level of soundproofing has significantly improved since the new halls were built. People can be sitting in the downstairs area having a natter and it's still nice and quiet on the above floors. Now, as previously stated; I am no longer a student... But if I was, I would have been fairly happy to have been placed in the halls.

One of the big concerns (which was never mentioned to me) was the huge distance between the main campus and the school of management campus. We have class at both campuses, which costs one pound one way and another pound back. It is quite inconvenient as there is only one bus per hour. In respect to the school itself- there is a lack of 'brand' in the Bradford name. I have heard that the School of Management is very good here, however, not many people have heard of this university overseas. I think that the staff are friendly- a lot of the tutors offer office hours and you can always email them to ask them questions (which they reply fairly quickly).

This is also a HOTEL…read more Odd place to stay if you are visiting Manchester. The rooms are dorm like, and there is a lot of security after dark. In some ways this is good, but in others it was lacking. I think I would have liked a hotel in the city, but I was a guest of the university. The plus is the morning breakfast which I did enjoy, and the helpful staff at the front desk helped me hire a car service to the airport that was quick and affordable. Overall, ok, but not a place I would book as a regular traveler.

I can only speak for the music department, but we've had first play on everything from state of the art jamhubs, ukulele classes, African drumming with brand new djembes- not to mention the large work stations with new touch screen computers! The tutors are fantastic and are always on hand for advice and a shoulder to cry on when lessons go wrong! The cafe is fab if a little expensive, the canteen serves amazing street food, soups, main meals, breakfasts, sandwiches, drinks and cakes! Though the one downside to it is that it's too small! Every lunchtime there is a crush to pay and choose food- only bad point!

And…read morewhile Manchester Metropolitan is still a great university, there's one word that comes to mind when I think about it. 'Fragmented'. I could be completely wrong, after all, it was a post-grad course I did here and they tend to be sectioned off somewhat from the rest of the crowd... hang on, I tell a lie. One of my best friends is currently doing her Masters at Salford and she feels part of the machine, so it goes to show, there can be differences. The fact that Manchester Met has so many campuses has a great deal to do with it, I think. The main campus is set across Oxford Road, which as we all know is one of Manchester's main party streets. Bars, clubs, pubs aplenty are dotted along the street, so your student accommodation would only be a stone's throw from someone being sick via too much sambuca. Depending on what kind of student you are, this can be a good thing or a bad thing. But there's more. While Oxford Road has a sense of community, some students are chucked far, far away on a campus entitled Crewe and Alsager. Have you ever passed Crewe on a train from Manchester to God-knows-where? I have. Many times. It takes a very long time. And I visited the Crewe campus. There is NOTHING there. Similarly campuses are scattered around Didsbury as well as other parts of Manchester... perhaps I feel like I've been spoiled with Salford and the fact that everything's within walking distance - in fact I know I have. I do admire Man Met's student union building, as it even has a rock club in it, and the Humanities department has a great mix of teachers. I adored my supervisors during my Masters, they were fabulous. However one of my best friends did make the mistake about talking about Man Met's 'not so great reputation' (the rumour that they'll let anyone in regardless of grades) on The Weakest Link, to which Anne Robinson raised an eyebrow and the Man Met head honchos chastised him greatly. So my conclusion would be, don't get drawn in by its central location and party atmosphere. Go there because you like the tutors and find a course that suits you. If you do, you have the potential to make good use of Manchester's student Mecca. Enjoy! (Just don't get stuck in Crewe, for the love of God. Unless you're into suburbs and trumpets.)

This area includes All Saints, The New Business School, Hollings Faculty, Mabel Tylecote, School of Art and Geoffrey Manton to name a few. On the other side of Oxford road are delicious cheap takeouts and easy-going cheap pubs. Lovely place to go for a pint when you have had enough of seminars and lectures.

With the access course you can choose study times to fit around your lifestyle. The staff are all very friendly and willing to help with every aspect of your course. There is a restaurant and a café on site, a hairdressing salon and a fully equipped library with flexible learning centre. The atmosphere in the college is great, everyone gets on and they're all polite and considerate to others. I love coming to this college, much better than others I've been to in the past.
