Came here with a group after our dance class. Our server was attentive and was able to split our checks easily. I ordered the vegetable dumpling bowl and was surprised it came with a broth. It was a little salty, but overall great flavor. I ordered the fish cake sliders last time I was here and the bread to protein ratio was heavy on the bread. Other people at our table had cocktails and mocktails and they looked very festive with their tiki cups.

Great location right in Old Town. Been coming for years. Food never disappoints. Big portion of perfectly crispy fish bites. Pork stuffed potstickers were also perfectly cooked. Makes for a great happy hour. Bartender may have been having a bad day or overwhelmed. But, he was very cordial and most helpful. Super busy on a Friday night. I hope to be back very soon.

There is nothing like being on a beach in Hawaii with a Mai Tai. When you live in the desert, these tiki themed restaurants and bars are the closest that we can get to that experience. Hula's Modern Tiki puts their own spin on classic tiki bars of the 1960's. It is a great place for drinks during happy hour or to dine at for lunch or dinner. In addition to cocktails, Hula's has a food menu that is a fusion of island and American cuisine. I have had the opportunity to visit all of the Hula's locations here in the Valley throughout the years. This location in Uptown Phoenix is one that I have visited many times and is probably my favorite location. Their drink menu has a number of popular cocktails. The Mai Tai, Hawaii 5-O, Blue Hawaiian and Hurricane are just a few of my favorites. I have only once gathered enough people to partake in a Scorpion bowl. The food menu at Hula's is quite large with gluten-free options and discounted prices at both regular and reverse happy hour. The atmosphere is fun and lively at Hula's Modern Tiki. They do brunch on the weekends too. I recently ordered the Loco Moco and Dark & Stormy for dinner. My friend ordered the Hunkin Samoa Burger and let me try it. I love spam and really enjoyed the flavors in that burger. Another favorite of mine is the Jawaiian Jerk Chicken Plate. The vibrant tiki décor and the sounds of Hawaiian music in the background add to Hula's vibrate atmosphere. Check out their speakeasy next door called The Captain's Cabin if you want to hang out and drink cocktails in a pirate-themed setting.

elite bar esque food. Got the tiki fries, fish cakes and bbq ribs And all of them were awesome. Service was solid and they had some cool drinks too

    Lettuce wraps.

How can the food be so good at one Hulas and so bad at another? This location continues to disappoint wilted lettuce, food with no flavor.

My mom and step-dad, Dave. They loved the bay views and the cocktails. My mom gasped over the Blue Hawaiians!

Stopped in here for lunch on a weekday and it was a nice quick-ish lunch. It's bright, clean and airy when you walk in and we were greeted and sat quickly. There is a good selection of items and I ordered a few appetizers for the table and we got the coconut shrimp rolls, sweet potato fries, crispy fish bites and a key lime pie for dessert. The coconut shrimp rolls were filled with mini shrimp and were good. The sweet potato fries tasted like any other spot, personally I would've liked a bit more crisp to them. The fish bites were really good and the key lime pie was too! Nothing stood out as the best thing I ever ate but I left fill which was the point. Overall, food was good and prices were fair, service was quick and friendly. I would stop in again!

We came at a good time. When we walked in we were greeted and told to grab a seat anywhere. They were still serving brunch, but, thankfully, they were serving at their regular menu as well. This place isn't a tiki bar like you'd see in Palm Springs. Rather, it's more truly-, inspired--except the cool tiki room of to the side. There are some fun pictures on the wall. Make sure you look at underneath the bar on the far end--there are lots of little treasures to see! There is a patio with seating for those cooler days (at least cooler than today!!). We ordered: *Pink Bikini Martini *Moco Loco *Jawaiian Jerk Chicken Plate The jerk chicken, which is shredded, came with two pieces of johnny cake, fried plantains, and rice topped with mango salsa. My jerk chicken was good, but I wished I had ordered the Moco Loco. The Moco Loco was the best! The gravy was delish! The martini was not my cup of tea, but it was my son's cup of tea, so he finished it for me. This is a good choice, and it would be great to have a party in the tiki room.

This place was not at all what I expected or wanted, unfortunately. The only thing tiki about this place was some tiki decor and maybe the menu but even then it's a stretch. Most tiki bars I have been to are dark and fun with a fun vibe. This place is more like a Dennys trying to look like a tiki bar. Service was fine. Food and drinks were average. Also there is no vibe at all. There is a patio but even that looked lacking. Doubt I will try this spot again with so many other options in the area.

We celebrated a birthday here and we loved it! I got the crispy fish bites, spicy Thai fish cakes, Jawaiian jerk mahi, and the captain's colanda. -CRISPY FISH BITES - white fish, panko and togarashi encrusted, with an island remoulade for dipping. -SPICY THAI FISH CAKES - white fish, cilantro, chili, red onion, ginger, aioli -JAWAIIAN JERK MAHI - jerk sauce, rice, fried sweet plantains, jamaican johnny cakes, mango salsa -CAPTAIN'S COLADA - coconut cream, allspice falernum syrup, pineapple juice

A pretty decent spot that doesn't stand out but is not bad. I tried the Cajun burger, bbq ribs, and the crispy fish bites as an appetizer. The service was pretty great. Quick with friendly demeanor, really all I could ask for. The fish bites was good. Good crisp, lacking a little bit of flavor. The sauce makes up for it but I'd have liked a little more seasoning. 4/5 The bbq ribs were very tender, good flavor, a bit too sweet for my liking. The sweet potato fries were pretty average, a little too soggy and now tender enough. The slaw I thought was also just ok. I wasn't a huge fan of the flavor. 3/5 overall. The Cajun burger was also just alright. The patty lacked a little bit of the crisp that I like on it usually. The Cajun seasoning I found to be strange on the burger. 3/5 as well Overall definitely would not say it's bad but not a recommendation from me either.

    Island Style Poke!! (11/25/24)

A cute small independent restaurant I found via a Yelp search. I really liked the mod 60's meets Hawaiian interior design. Nice big long windows for great natural sunlight, open bar in the center of the space, cool curved booths scattered, and two glass garage doors that open to their nicely spaced outdoor patio. Great house music playing. Service was good, no complaints; polite staff, checked in on us, no rushing. Nice menu, not too crammed, several things that sound delish, pokè bowls, fish tacos, Hawaiian themed burgers, etc. I was craving poke, so we shared the Island Style Poke: also happened to read the description for their Crispy Coconut Shrimp Rolls, so we tried those too. The food was excellent, seriously! The Coconut Shrimp Rolls were divine! The wrapping used was phyllo dough thin and did not detract from the guts of the rolls. The rolls were filled tight and all components melded wonderfully! Even the dipping sauce, which I was expecting to be spicy hot, was just sweet and complimentary; really, though, I didn't use the dip much since the rolls were bursting with flavor solo! The salmon poké was also seriously delicious! I really enjoyed the very lite "sauces used as they didn't retract from the subtle salmon and chunky avocado; perfect undertones. I can wait for my next trip to AZ. I dare hesitate to say a meal here might just have to become a regular tradition when visiting Phoenix!

I love the location! They were so kind and prompt to move us to a booth after our request so we could sit next to each other. Lighting and vibe inside is nice. The Hawaiian ceviche was so fresh and tasty. Our burgers were good too. The drinks were tasty and had cool glasses. I would definitely come here again.

Pork tacos. Plated beautifully, but too sweet :(

Ask the Community - Hula's Modern Tiki

How is the sound level, is it loud? Can you talk normally after 5pm?

If you're in the bar area or outside it may be a little depending on how busy it is but they have a separate area, away from that, where you can ask to be seated where it's not loud and a normal conversation can easily be had.

Are reservations required for a group of 10?

Do you sell tiki mugs at the bar?

    Yes they do.

Is happy hour everyday, and what are the happy hour times?

According to their website: MON, TUES, THURS & FRI 3:30PM-6PM WEDNESDAY all night 3:30PM-10PM…

Do you have a TV outside? I'm looking for a place to watch a Suns game.

No they do not, but they have 2 at the bar

    Is your patio dog friendly?

    Yes it is!

Do you guys have a gluten free menu?

    Yes they do!

    Is there a kids menu?

    Yes!

Can you get the coconut cream pie to go, or just the key lime?

Absolutely! Ask whomever takes your order. Since it’s not technically on the take out menu, if you have any issues, just ask for a manager.…

What's their happy hour like and what are the deals?

Don't miss it! It's 3-5pm. Large assortment of beers on Draft are $4 instead of $6. There is a whole separate section of Appetizers about a dozen designated Happy hour. A few are the same duplicated from the regular menu. They range $3-$6. See you…

Is the black bean burger vegan by chance?

Unfortunately, no. But it is vegetarian, and very tasty..;) You should try the Jungle Tofu Bowl. It’s a full entree, and completely vegan! I think you’ll love it.…

    Do they sell tiki mugs/glasses?

Yes! I have a couple myself!

    Is their house salad vegan?

They're extremely vegan-friendly so even if it isn't natural, I'm sure it could be requested to be vegan. They have tofu tacos and veggie options too. I've never had a problem eating vegan here.

Even waiting outside for our reservation we were having a great time feeling like we were at a 1930's train stop. They walk you through the menu, the experience, as well as guide you if you're not sure what you want to drink. We ordered several drinks and they were all so creative and fun! My favorite was the tea with the lit lavender "cigarette." It added to the ambiance and overall experience. We also ordered the trip of snacks tray and several other drinks. 1.17.26 A Tale of Two Beet Salads!…read more The first one we ordered tasted kind of "meaty" like maybe it was on the same grill as the burgers? The second one tasted "clean" or like it was supposed to taste. The Burger & Fish Tacos were full of flavor & freshness! I loved their fries b/c crispy on outside & soft on the outside. Missing their Guac & Chips Starter that was on former menu tho. We gotta commend the F&B Manager here! He overheard us talking to the waiter about the differences in the Charred Beet Salads & told us why: one was on the grill too long & he only knew that b/c he was in the kitchen watching them make it. He appreciated us sharing about the nuanced difference in how salads tasted & comped one. Wow - this is really going above & beyond: caring enough to have a convo w/ diners, acknowledging their palates detecting the difference AND making it right, b/c as he said "both should taste the same, like the second one." A commitment to excellence and consistency is a rarity. Overall, Lylo Swim Club outdoor bar/restaurant is a little oasis tucked away amongst so much greenery and beauty! Yes they have the pool nearby, but we didn't take a dip. Something to look forward to! P.S. Can the tile pattern on the bar be any more gorgeous?!

Just keep an eye on how much you're spending! There's a lot of spots for improvement here, but I'd also say that Lylo is one of the few businesses I've ever seen do such a visually-great escape out from their pool area. If you're here for the escape and temper your expectations for food or drink, I think you'd have a good time. There are a TON of mosquitos here, so prepare accordingly. The bar and hotel lobby didn't have bug spray nor any for sale. The nearby liquor store does have some for sale at less than a block's walk. (The pool is hot mid Phoenix summer. The pool itself felt closer to a hot tub than a refreshingly cold pool. I'm told this is normal for pools in Arizona in the summer.) PROS: -All of the drinks are really pretty, visually, and with the pool, you have a great mecca for social media photos. -Despite the ridiculous 110+ Phoenix heat, we were relatively comfortable in the shaded restaurant area with the misters. We could still see the pool, but we weren't baking alive. -Pool bathrooms were clean enough. There were lots of puddles and toilet paper on the ground, but nothing was horrific or moldy like some pool bathrooms can be. Spacious stalls for changing too - though I didn't see any shower or changing areas. -The pool area itself is pretty! It makes for gorgeous Instagram photos, and Lylo knows that. There are lots of little spots (a camp sign, a chair off on its own, all the loungers, etc.) that make cute photo backdrops in addition to the pool itself. -There is a collection of inflatable pool toys in the corner that seem to be open for guest use. CONS: -Water bottles are not allowed at all - not even sealed disposable plastic ones from the grocery store. They'll store them for you, and you can fetch your own water with disposable plastic cups while you're here. -The misters in the pool area were broken. With the heat, we chose not to actually use the pool, and instead stayed in the restaurant, shaded area with misters. -All of the on-menu drinks are pretty sweet and not super boozy (at their price points). It's easy to go through quite a few at their higher price. Make sure that you're spending intentionally. -We weren't in love with the food we ordered. It felt like frozen food reheated and served to us. To be fair, that's about to be expected from a pool bar, but it was still something to note at the prices and with nearby restaurants walkable. -Service is there. I wouldn't say it was friendly or welcoming, but the servers checked in often in-between talking to people in swimsuits or joking with friends. I rarely waited for anything, but I didn't feel like a valued guest. -The fabric of the chaise loungers and lounge beds are stained. I saw some employees hauling off some of them and shoving them into the back of a fabric cleaning van, so I'd assume they rotate in and out and have to deal with a ton of spilled drinks.

The flavor profile was unlike anything I had experienced before--earthy, bold, and distinctive in a way that felt both adventurous and refined. More importantly, the effects were exactly as described. As I enjoyed my drink, a gentle sense of relaxation gradually settled in, leaving me feeling calm, centered, and remarkably at ease without any sense of heaviness.
