I visited Hunan as a FIRST TIME CUSTOMER for lunch conveniently Located near Sam's Club in Fort Collins, Colorado. and immediately noticed that several classic Chinese dishes were not available on the lunch menu some of which are SESAME CHICKEN, ORANGE CHICKEN, and GENERAL TSO'S CHICKEN were only on the dinner menu at $24.99, which was Hugely disappointing. Since those were unavailable, I ordered the GARLIC CHICKEN for $15.99 (before tax and tip). This was my first time eating here. What I received: About 3 thin slices of chicken (roughly 1-1.5 oz total) Around 3/4 cup of mixed vegetables and brown Sauce, which didn't have any garlic Flavor or signs of fresh Garlic. About half a cup of white rice (basically one large spoonful) Wonton soup on the side (the soup was good) The ambiance was nice, but you can't eat ambiance -- and the portion size was extremely underwhelming. There simply wasn't enough food, and the lack of popular Chinese favorites on the lunch menu made it even less satisfying. If you can't even give a good portion of rice. However this is what CONFIRMS THE ENTIRE EXPERIENCE. The Rice was in direct proportion to the lunch entree. I GET IT, If they give too much rice then the Entree would look off. COMPARISON WITH OTHER LOCAL OPTIONS After leaving, I drove to Canton Palace in Loveland because my Chinese craving definitely wasn't satisfied. There, I paid $12.99 for Sesame Chicken, which is always good and served in a plate size comparable to a full dinner portion. Total was $15.87 including tip, and I got a full meal: Sesame chicken Fried rice Choice of soup (I always pick wonton) The plate size at Canton Palace was two and a half times larger than Hunan's lunch plate. Another excellent and more affordable option is Simply Thai. Their food is consistently good. Lunch specials run $9.75 You get two different lunch choices daily, plus soup Portions and value are solid across the board Note: English proficiency can be limited at times, so you may run into unclear explanations or upcharges for chef specials. But overall, the whole menu is in the $12-$13 range -- not $24 like Hunan's dinner prices. --- SUMMARY Hunan offers a pleasant atmosphere however this was not fine dining. Given the very small lunch portions, limited lunch menu options, and unexpectedly high pricing for classics that most places include on their lunch menu. Do NOT eat here. CREDIT CARD FRAUD GALORE!!! I used to love Hunan but this last time I went, it was awful. It's been a few years since have eaten there. Found out that the ownership changed. Either way, food was awful. My husband's soup smelled like pee. The sweet and sour was made with some weird sauce that was no sweet and sour. As for the credit card issue, fraudulent charges showed up right after eating here. Per Betsy W and Sherry S, they also ate there and noticed that they had fraud on their cards as well. We were in FoCo area so we decided to check out Hunan Chinese restaurant for the first time since they have GF options. As soon as we walked in, we were greeted by a friendly male staff name Miguel. He was also our server. Miguel was so friendly and professional. He was also very attentive. He kept checking on us and made sure everything was OK with our food and drinks. Came here after seeing that this place offered gluten-free options for Chinese food. I first called over the phone and asked how the gluten free chicken is prepared. I was informed that they use corn flour to batter their chicken before they fry it. So I decided to go and try it. When I arrived I walked and and stood waiting for about 5 minutes listening to the female employee at the front counter flirting back with a male customer who seemed like a complete tool. Then a second customer came in and a line was forming while we waited for them to finish flirting with each other. I was then brought to a table inside. The inside of the restaurant has both booths and tables. The inside is old, the furniture and booths are dated, and you can even see that the glassware has high-mileage. I still wanted to see how decent the food is. The menu seemed to have plenty of options, and it mentions that there are gluten free options available. I ordered the General Tso's chicken, with white meat, which is supposed to come with soup and rice. I was asked if I wanted soup, and I declined because I didn't realize that it is supposed to come with my meal. Later I realized this and found out that the only soup I can have is the egg drop soup, which is gluten free and lactose free. I again declined and was disappointed that I couldn't have either of the other 2 soups. When my meal came out I was a bit shocked. It wasn't breaded, as they told me it would be. It was basically pieces of chicken, not breaded with corn flour/meal, swimming in so much sauce it was basically soupy, with a small handful of scallions sprinkled into it. It also came with a small cup of rice. Looking at it, I could tell that there was absolutely no passion taken in cooking my chicken. The bowl of rice was also smaller than I imagined. The General Tso's sauce tasted odd, not bad, but oddly different than typically used at other restaurants. I at the General Tso's chicken in the soupy sauce which filled the plate. See attached pictures. When I received the bill it came to $17.48. Yes, that's right, $17.48 for just a small plate of soupy General Tso's chicken cooked without passion and not deep fried, with a small serving of rice, and nothing else, not even a drink or appetizer! I felt ripped off, so I asked for the manager. The manager said that customers are typically served DARK MEAT and that for white meat it's a few extra dollars. I was also informed that if you want white meat, that they will not fry your chicken in the corn flour/meal, for who knows what reason. I was surprised and confused. What changes I think the restaurant needs to make: The entire place needs to be updated, everything, which probably isn't a surprise. The female at the front counter had no respect and made us wait and listen to herself flirting with a customer. It was upsetting. Teach your staff to have respect. My waitress did a decent job but was tied up most of the time at other tables. The food needs to be flash fried using corn "meal", which is better than corn flour if you know how to do it right, as a breading. There should also be a separate fryer. When I asked the waitress if there was a separate fryer, she said she didn't know, which means they don't. Walmart sells fryers starting around $30 dollars. She told me that they make the food in the Wok for people who are allergic. I was mostly disappointed with my food because it was swimming in sauce, and there was nothing to it. Just cooked chicken in a sauce. I could have made it at home, which is shameful. The rice on the side was so small that I had to take little bites of it so I didn't run out of it as I ate my chicken. Giving some more rice and flash frying corn meal battered chicken would be more filling, less sauce on the plate please. They should also make all of their soups gluten and lactose free... it's not hard and most other places already do this. Lastly, the prices. Average prices are probably around the $11.50 to $13.00 range depending on the type of meat. Chicken should cost less, over seafood and steak. The prices listed on the menu here should be the final price. I ordered at another restaurant in the area and I got more food, for $11 and some change after taxes. Here, I didn't even get soup or a drink and it was almost $18 dollars. Way too expensive! I usually don't get dark meat in every bite when I eat at other restaurants, and when you ask for white meat, it should be all white meat, instead of just some white meat. Meals shouldn't be all dark meat standard. And again, make sure you flash fry your food in a separate fryer, before tossing them in the wok with the sauce. Add some other ingredients to the meal, such as carrots, green peppers, and bamboo shoots, which would be nice. If these changes were made, then things would be looking much better here, but since it was such low quality and so expensive, I recommend that you DO NOT come here. Hunan is awesome! They have plentiful options for gluten free folks, as they'll make many of their sauces gluten free. I love the broccoli beef & if I could handle spice better, their sesame chicken is delicious too. My boyfriend has tried more of their items that are not gluten free and enjoys them too. The chow mein had no noodles - I got a container of goopy chicken and bokchoy and a container of regular rice. I was starving so I ate about 1/4 of it and won't be touching the rest. This restaurant is our favorite for Chinese in Fort Collins. The food is consistently excellent as is the service. Almost every dish can be made gluten-free. We have eaten at Hunan's since the 80s. It has been awhile, so we decided to try it. Service was S L O W ... and not crowded at all. That's not a good sign. Food was OK, not as good since management changed. And prices were higher, which is standard these days. What irked me was the pathetic serving of rice, especially for two people. It was delivered in a small cup, like you get for soup. I asked for more. I was charged $1.50 for a "side dish" of rice. I complained when I paid, cashier said it wasn't up to her. I asked to talk to mgr/owner but was told they were not there. Fine, we will go where our business is appreciated -- somewhere else. read more
