The garlic chicken was really nothing like it was described, and just seemed to be a generic medley of diced chicken and vegetables. And with it being called garlic chicken, you couldn't even taste the garlic. The gentleman working the counter was very friendly and helpful. Our visit was not the best and I'm so sad. Hunan Garden was the best place for Chinese food when I was a student at MTU in the 90's! We ordered sweet and sour soup that tasted burnt. The crab ragoons were fresh and handmade. The sweet and sour tofu was too sweet for me. My husband and I both got fried rice with our entrees, and they came out in a single bowl. The fried rice was bad. Service was pretty quick, but one of the workers was watching something on their phone and it was loud. This place has excellent food. Inside it needs some updates, but has a warm comfortable atmosphere. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. We split the Singapore style Laksa red curry-- the waiter even brought us tongs to make it easy for us to share. The schechuan style eggplant is very tasty, try the dumplings and the menu has lots of option for dietary options. First time visiting Houghton and Hunan Garden since I am from Cleveland Ohio. I try Hot and Sour Soup and Kung Pao Chicken at every restaurant I visit. These items at Hunan Garden definitely deserve 5 stars. The hot and sour soup was the correct consistency and the hotness and sourness were of the perfect ratio. Then there was the perfect Kung Pao Chicken. The super fresh vegetables were a little larger than I am used to, but that is attributed to the fact that they were all hand cut which made them so tasty. Lastly there was the sauce. This sauce was so delicious that I ate my meal with a spoon rather than a fork to taste the broth each time. I even skipped the rice till the very end since the Kung Pao was so delicious itself. We'd seen this restaurant for years and never stopped in. After a week of eating mostly bar food, we needed a break so we stopped in for some Chinese. One thing that stood out was there was a good family atmosphere there, and it was clear that several groups of patrons knew the staff well as their kids were mingling and playing. It gave the place a warmth that you don't usually run into when looking for Chinese food. The group was split about half and half regarding whether they liked it or not. It sounded like some of our meals had pretty good flavor and others weren't as exciting. I got the Kung Pao chicken or something similar and thought it was decent. Their rice was good and it comes out in bowls to be passed via a lazy Susan. Our waiter was okay and the place seemed clean. I'll stop in and try the place one more time. I had read the reviews so my expectations were low, but this was the worst Chinese food we've ever had. The wonton soup was raw vegetables floating in cold water, the hot and sour soup was also cold. My daughter said her egg drop was hot and it had veggies in it which was an interesting twist. The "fried rice" looked/tasted like rice pilaf and our entrees were gross. The shrimp were frozen and breaded with tails. The chicken was unidentifiable. Felt bad for our young waiter when he came and asked how everything was. Is this place sterling clean? No. Is the service good? Not quite. (Usually if I'm in a group of 5 or more, one always gets the short straw and waits and extra 5min for their food.) Does this place have the most authentic Chinese food in the UP? Hell yes. If you're ever in there and only see the standard American Chinese fare on the menu, but a group of Chinese students walk in, seem to have big bowls of amazingly different food and usually get a chat from the chef, this is the path to investigate. After my trip to China a few years back, I came to learn to love eggplant, pork belly, and unidentified meats cooked to delicious heights and this place has it all if you ask for their special menu. My go-to staple is either the braised clay pot pork belly and eggplant(or egg depending on what they have on hand) and it just melts in your mouth. Portions are always large and filling for any of their dishes. In summary, this place is a gem if you're an adventurous eater and feel like stepping away from the msg/sugar-sauced american fare and trying some authentic Chinese food that rivals what you can get on the streets of Shanghai or Beijing. read more

I laugh because I just read Sarah's review. The lo mein is slathered with grease. YUP. While I like Chinese food and we all enjoyed our items enough to go back a day later for lunch, we agreed. It's definitely not your lowfat Chinese joint. Super greasy, super fatty. But we enjoyed the flavors in a blind taste-test. But really we were looking at our grease as we threw it down the hatch. ;) Lo mein, sesame beef, sesame chicken, kung pao, General Tso... tried them all. I've become a fan of the Hunan, visiting the restaurant for take out, dinner with family and lunch with husband. I love the friendly staff and the food continues to make me happy. I've tried a few different items and everything is fresh and full of flavor. Egg rolls taste like they are made to order, not reheated or microwaved like other asian restaurant in town. Each time I've gone to either eat in or take out, the wait for my food was short and food still fresh, tasting like it was just prepared and by a chef who cares about each dish he makes. This restaurant may not have the fancy decor and lighting of the other one in town but it also doesn't have the over-priced menu that lacks flavor. I recommend this restaurant for a great inexpensive lunch as well as a dinner out with family. I'm a fan for sure! read more

If I could give Hunan Garden 0 stars, I wouldn't hesitate. I could make better food with my eyes closed. I could provide a better customer service as an adolescent child. Our first experience at Hunan Garden was less than mediocre, but who ever learns their lesson the first time? We were served our dishes with what appeared to be the last of the leftover rice from the day before- but beggars can't be choosers, right? So we choked it down and when we asked for more to accompany the remaining food, we were informed that there was no more rice (who knew it was such a commodity?). Remaining trips to Hunan Garden played out pretty similarly. The trip tonight however, revealed the true extent of unprofessionalism and (probably health code violations) that thrive within Hunan Garden. After ordering our meals, my girlfriend ventured to the bathroom and returned with horror stories of scattered RAZORS, bottles of miscellaneous beauty products, and borderline biohazardous conditions. My trip to the men's restroom was similar. Upon the arrival of our food to the table, my General Tso tofu was cold, but this was the least of our worries. My sweet, darling girlfriend received the wrong order. We waited for almost half an hour before our server (and the manager/owner??) returned to the table, check in hand, to ask how our meal was. When we shared with her that one of our dishes was incorrect, she laughed it off and neglected to offer to remake the food, prepare an alternative, or comp. or even discount the meal. We left the restaurant and proceeded to Walmart to pick up a bag of old-reliable Synder's Pretzel Bites (of the hot buffalo variety) to nourish our bodies. Needless to say, we will not be returning to Hunan Garden, and would advise anyone who does not wish for their dining-out experience to be permanently tainted to do the same. I ordered fried dumplings, burnt black on one side, small with very little pork, moved on to the Crab Rangoon, about the size of a half dollar, also over cooked, next I tried the egg drop soup, I have never had egg drop soup with mushrooms, soup had no taste, mostly broth and salty. My entrée was Almond Boneless Chicken, also over cooked, chicken was like shoe leather, extremely tough, I don't think there was one almond in the dish and the sauce was tasteless as well. The place was almost empty so we didn't wait very long for our food (~5-8 min), the waitress was only there to take orders and serve the food, but was accommodating and not absent. This place was a strange experience. We went there last year for my wife's birthday, and they cooked up this huge fish special for her. The presentation of it was absolutely awesome. It was way too salty, yet tasty. The place was actually filthy by normal standards... a greasy film on the tables, chairs, dishes, etc. Our group was the only customers there, and the atmosphere was so unique, like being in some run-down place in a third-world country yet looking out the windows at familiar downtown Houghton. I see restaurant reviewers complaining about the most trivial matters of décor... if you are one of those unadventurous persons, you might as well stay away from this place. Ordered the chicken curry and rangoons for takeout. The food was ready really quickly, about 15 minutes, however it wasn't to great. The chicken in the curry just seemed off, almost like it was not fully cooked. It sort of seemed mushy. No complaints on the rest of the curry, it had a little heat to it, but not enough to my liking. However the meal was rather large so you get your monies worth at least. Nothing real spectacular or anything to write home about... but the decor reminded me of Chinese New Year; I liked the fountain and bamboo tree in the front. Ordered Sesame Chicken and steamed rice. The service was quick and friendly however the food fell flat. The chicken portion was small for the price and quality. - The taste was ok but oily, the rice was done right. I haven't tried any other Chinese places so I can't make comparisons but this wasn't a bad place to try, I'll try some around the corner and then I can compare. Recommend?? Grade C- read more
