a plate of fried food with dipping sauce
Emily S.

The crab ragoons were fresh and handmade. The sweet and sour tofu was too sweet for me. My husband and I both got fried rice with our entrees, and they came out in a single bowl. The fried rice was bad. Service was pretty quick, but one of the workers was watching something on their phone and it was loud. There were only 4 people in the restaurant, so it was very noticeable.

Kung Pao Chicken

First time visiting Houghton and Hunan Garden since I am from Cleveland Ohio. I try Hot and Sour Soup and Kung Pao Chicken at every restaurant I visit. These items at Hunan Garden definitely deserve 5 stars. The hot and sour soup was the correct consistency and the hotness and sourness were of the perfect ratio. Then there was the perfect Kung Pao Chicken. The super fresh vegetables were a little larger than I am used to, but that is attributed to the fact that they were all hand cut which made them so tasty. Lastly there was the sauce. This sauce was so delicious that I ate my meal with a spoon rather than a fork to taste the broth each time. I even skipped the rice till the very end since the Kung Pao was so delicious itself. I really hope I get to try another of their meals before I leave Houghton

Lots of options on the menu. Bland food with way too much sauce. I was expecting more veggies and meat. It was all underwhelming.

Seafood soup. Spicy with good flavor. Would prefer more squid and zucchini in it tho.

Finally an open Chinese restaurant in Houghton. Ambience was really nice: warm and cosy with good lounge music that was soothing . Service was good. We had the juupong seafood soup which warmed the cockles of my heart on a freezing day. The chicken shrimp combo came sizzling. Nice touch.

Pork belly and eggplant dish braised in a clay pot. Found on the "special menu".

On the food side, I ordered General Tso's chicken with fried rice and an egg roll. The dish itself is definitely standard American-Chinese fare and it is clearly on the menu, but the execution was off. The chicken had a decent initial crisp, but the sauce leaned heavily sweet with very little spice or depth, which made it feel one-dimensional halfway through the meal. The fried rice was plain and under-seasoned, mostly just colored rice with minimal mix-ins. The egg roll was the most reliable part, with a solid crunch, but that was about it. Service was functional but not particularly attentive. The order was correct and came out fairly quickly, but there was no real sense of engagement or quality control during pickup. It felt like a straightforward transaction rather than a tuned-in service experience. The ambiance inside is very basic and dated, more of a utilitarian takeout setup than a comfortable dine-in space. Lighting is bright, seating is simple, and while it is clean enough, it does not feel like a place designed for staying in and eating. It is clearly built for quick pickup and leaving. Overall, this China King falls short in execution. The food is recognizable but not well-balanced, service is minimal, and the atmosphere is strictly functional. It works in a pinch, but it does not deliver a strong enough experience to stand out.

Food took a while to come out and only one dish at a time. For our family of 6, that meant that most people's food would be cold if you're waiting for everyone to be served before you eat. While waiting for the food I was mesmerized by the sweets being made on the TV. Only thing I would change is I would recommend they get a heated space for dishes to stay warm while waiting for others to be made. No one felt comfortable eating while others were still waiting for their food.

There is *so much* original art. On the way to the bathrooms, you can see some lovely sketches of cats and chalk art on the walls. My favorite art piece is three lucky cats holding up a colorful fish; it makes me smile so much. The location: From the outside, it looks like it would be a counter service fast food place, but don't let that fool you! Teriyaki Bowl shares a parking lot with the Starbucks and Game Stop. It can be a little tight, but we've never had a problem finding parking. The food/drink: - Thai tea - sweet and refreshing. You can order with boba if you like, but just ice was good for me! - Eggplant lover stir fry - this past trip to Teriyaki Bowl, there was a special that featured eggplant. I have a weakness for eggplant and this did not disappoint. The sauce was flavorful and the eggplant was perfectly cooked. I had a choice of protein, so chose tofu which is cooked so it's beautiful on the outside and creamy on the inside. And y'know, white rice isn't anything special often, but something about the white rice was perfect for what I was craving. It was truly perfect. - Ube cheesecake - taken to go, the cheesecake was swoon worthy. It was a perfect portion. Highly recommend. ***I had a 3 spice level on my first visit. I'm not a slouch (I don't think?) when it comes to spice, but 3 for me was just on the edge of discomfort. A 2 spice level was *perfect.* Don't be afraid to be humble because they are SERIOUS about their spice. The service: Lovely. It's very clear that Teriyaki Bowl is a popular Marquette staple, but that only enhanced how impressed I was that we got personal attention. Everyone we interacted with was cheerful, kind, and welcoming. Next time: I need to get something with noodles. I had a chow mein before and loved it, they're a must have.

Nang and her husband are absolute gems (she does the cooking, he takes the orders and serves with a smile!). They learned the recipes and techniques from Aoy, the OG, and they still do it just as great. I had the grilled orange chicken, wontons, and hot and sour soup (absolutely to die for, my favorite spicy soup for kicking a cold). The food was piping hot, huge portions, great taste and flavor, and I had a great time learning about the business in its new hands! The building is exactly the same as it's always been--a homey ambiance, small counter for ordering with a few stools for the patiently waiting customers, to-go meal supplies like cutlery and napkins, and local business cards hung by the door promoting the other hard workers in this little Yooper town. Rice Paddy is the gem of Marquette and I have a feeling it always will be. (Pro tip: grab an order of Rice Paddy and head over to the Wooden Nickel for a beverage with your meal or park at Presque Isle for a picnic!)

I got it, and it was like white rice and sauce. The sweet-and-sour sauce was so heavy and sweet on it. The chicken had no batter/ breading. The vegetables were soggy. I then ordered a shrimp eggroll what was like eating coleslaw deep fried, nothing like an eggroll I ever ate. Crab wontons, average. All for 27.00 never going back!
