I've never written a Yelp review, but after seeing all the negative reviews I just had to say something. I'm not connected with Hunan Star in any way but have been eating there since the '90's, still eat there today. I've never had anything bad there, the staff has always been fantastic as is the food. In the 30 years I've been going there I've probably had pretty much everything on their menu, most were very good, some were good but not my favorites. I'm not that familiar with oriental food, don't consider myself an expert on it, but I know what good food tastes like. This is literally the worst Chinese food I have ever had. The chicken chop suey was a flavorless watery mess, and the steamed rice was dry. My fiance got sesame chicken and even it wasn't very good. The egg roll and crab puff were subpar as well. I have no idea how this place has 4 stars. People in Friendswood need to take a trip to Bellaire or something to know what good Chinese food is like because this ain't it. read more

Due to Yelp reviews we had lunch at Hunan Star today, and we made the right decision. The restaurant was very clean and the service was prompt. We ordered the lunch specials that were a great value with large servings. My husband had General Tso's Crispy Chicken, and I had the Spicy Beef with Vegetables that was not very spicy but still good. The Hot and Sour Soup was great, and the Wonton Soup was good but bland. The soup, egg rolls, and rice were included bringing our total (including one ice tea) to $19. We look forward to returning for another great meal. read more

My family has been coming to this restaurant for many, many years. They have always been patient and kind to people with rowdy, screechy children, and I'll always be thankful for their kindness towards my mother and her seven children. Although the quality of the food has changed somewhat since the original owner of the restaurant left, it's still tough for me to find authentic Chinese food as good as Hunan Star. Because of this restaurant, I have ridiculously high standards for Chinese food. It's just not the same in Dallas (where I live now). The store front looked amazing and the staff was friendly. I ordered yesterday, shrimp fried rice, sweet & sour shrimp and honey chicken, the food smelled great. I got home and was horrified after opening the containers. The rice had ZERO flavor the sweet and sour shrimp was burnt up and as far as the honey chicken, I have no words to intelligently explain what I saw. Found this place on Yelp and decided to give it a try after spending the afternoon at NASA. I give it 3 1/2 stars. You can't beat the lunch prices and the service was fast and friendly. I got the sweet and sour pork with hot and sour soup. The soup was excellent. The sweet and sour pork was on the dry side and not too flavorful. Fried rice and egg roll were on point though. My boyfriend got the general Tso chicken and enjoyed his. We shared an order of cheese puffs (rangoons). They were a little over cooked although still good but not spectacular. I'd say this place was a mixed bag but definitely has the potential to be good with a little tweaking. I sometimes wish Yelp offered half stars because this is one of those times that it's appropriate. read more

The service is always excellent without making you feel smothered. The vegetable lo-mein with brown sauce is delicious. If you want an extra kick, ask for it extra spicy. And it was spicy the way I like it. My husband was not as happy with the General Tso's chicken though. We will try it again, but he said he'll try a different dish. Asked for pork chow mein, and when I picked up my food and brought it home it was nothing but pork and fried rice. The concept of chow mein is that it is noodles, not rice! Pls do better job of listening and understanding da words dat come out of my mouth. I have said a couple times this afternoon already that I was really impressed with our lunch today and that it was alot better than I expected it to be - and I've alreayd returned to and eaten my leftovers. In short, this is by far the top Chinese restaurant I've eaten from in some time. The meat was SO fresh, and the General Tso's was so yummy and crispy and the sauce was potent and delicious. The hot and sour soup was great and the cheese puffs were a great start to the meal. And I liked that they have brown rice, not all the Chinese eateries offer it, and it was a pleasant surprise. My overall take is that everything was FRESH, fresh, well cooked, and the service was VERY attentive. The only complaint I have is that they don't have reduced sodium soy sauce, but I can certainly overlook that given the many, many positives - will definitely be back, and would highly recommend to others. For a lunch special which included General Tso's w/ white meat, egg roll, brown rice, and soup was about $8.50 - my table mates got the same thing but added tea/coke and their total was a little over $10. My gf wanted Chinese and we sought yelp for assistance and were astounded by the number of great reviews so we decided to give it a go. Man were we pleased. Delivery - exceptional (30 mins) Packaging - exceptional (all items incl sauce, sides, utensils) Taste - PERFECT by far one of the best dishes I've had and I always get the same thing when I order Chinese, Triple Delight. It's ok but I guess there's not too many places to choose from in this area. I'm used to some of the best Chinese food from NY and other states on the East coast and this doesn't even compare. The egg drop soup was bland and not how it's usually made, different lighter color too and a more watery consistency. The general tso's was not good. We just moved to the Clear Lake area and tried Hunan Star for Take-Out based on other Yelp Reviews. It definitely lived up to our expectations. We had the Sweet & Sour Chicken, General Tso's Chicken, and the Combo Lo-Mein along with egg rolls. Our total bill was reasonable ($40 approximately) and it was ready in a timely manner (15 to 20 minutes). The only disappointment was with the General Tso's. It was good, but I have had a lot better at other places. The sweet and sour sauce was a little spicy, and while my wife and I liked it, it was a little to spicy for our 8 and 10 year olds. The Lo-Mein and egg rolls were by far the best things we got! My youngest who is a picky eater ate both like there was no tomorrow. The next time we get take out, it will definitely include the Lo-Mein and eggrolls! All in all, we enjoyed the food and will definitely being getting food from them often. I've had their food on several occassions since my coworkers seem to love this place. The Chinese food isn't bad, but I've certainly had better. We often order the combination plates which is the standard thing to get. The prices are fairly cheap so it's certainly a place to consider when looking for cheap and fast Chinese food. I was not too impressed with their fried rice on several occassions since they were lacking flavor and often times stale. This restaurant offered delivery through the Door Dash. I was able to order online and pay for the food online and had delivery within a few minutes. The food was hot and prepared well. I had the General Tsos and although I've had better General Tsos, this was very good, one of the best. The wonton soup was awesome. The only problem I had was that we ordered shrimp toast and they forgot to put it in the order. I wasn't sure whose problem this was, either Door Dash or the restaurants, but contacted Door Dash to report a problem with not getting what we ordered and they promptly gave us a 5 dollar plus credit for the missing shrimp toast. So I was very pleased with the way this was handled. This place has a luncheon menu that is very inexpensive and has choice of rice, egg roll and soup with it. Even the luncheon menu had way too much food on it for me and I had lunch the next day off the one meal. I would definitely order from this restaurant again. read more
