However, rebels led by General Philemon Thomas prevailed at Baton Rouge with help of 44 grenadiers from Springfield under command of Colonel John B. Ballinger. Hehe This bridge is one of the historical landmarks that is quintessential Bayou St. John! Where else will you find a pedestrian bridge that opens sideways? Lately I've been seeing people put padlocks on the bridge reminiscent of what they do in Paris to signify ones eternal love. Although the sentiment is tres romantique it's actually damaging to the bridge so please don't do it! The weight of the locks will damage the already fragile bridge. So if you ever fancy a way to enjoy a blissful fall or spring evening then grab a chair or blanket and head to the bridge! You may even see me there! Enjoy!!

In addition to the colorful purple, green, and gold dancing waters of this lovely fountain and the plaques displaying the names and logos of many, many mardi Gras Krewes, both past and present, there are several benches and picnic tables surrounding the fountain so folks can gather and sit a spell and enjoy the view and the breeze off the lake. Mardi Gras Fountain my favorite place to meet up with friends after work and watch the sunset.

This state capitol feels like a monument to both old and new. Sprouting out amongst the nearby…read morebuildings as a concrete obelisk, you probably wouldn't think much of the Louisiana State Capitol. Its greens are a bit underwhelming but as you get closer to the building you do get a sense of its historic significance. Once you're in and past security you're greeted with an art deco style interior that feels old and outdated but in a bit of a charming way. Going on a Friday before a long weekend meant the place was a ghost town but that was nice as we felt we had the whole place to ourselves to explore. There wasn't much going on when we went but they do have an amazing observation deck that allows for beautiful views of the Baton Rouge area (for free!). You do have to take two elevators to reach the top but it's well worth it. Keeping with the theme both elevators are small and old fashioned which kind of adds to the charm. There's also a gift shop at the top where we bought some magnets from for a reasonable price. This was a fun pit stop we hit along the way to New Orleans which is how we would view this place as a whole. There's nothing here that would make you go out of your way for it, especially with how difficult parking can be around there (we walked 10 minutes from our spot). However, if you're on your way to NOLA or are very interested in Louisiana's state history, then this place would definitely be for you.

The interior is beautiful, peaceful, and filled with history. Even if you're not religious, there's plenty to appreciate here simply from an architectural and historical perspective. It's also one of those landmarks that feels inseparable from the French Quarter. Seeing the cathedral towering over Jackson Square is such a classic New Orleans view, especially in the evening when the whole area takes on a different atmosphere. Admission is free, so there's really no reason to skip it if you're already exploring the French Quarter. Just remember that it is an active place of worship and be respectful when visiting. An essential New Orleans landmark and an easy five stars from me.

She was not only very informative but also incredibly kind and personable. She had a way of explaining the history that made the tour feel engaging rather than just a typical scripted presentation. By the end, it almost felt like you were being shown around by a friend rather than just a guide. The tour itself is about 2-3 hours long and involves a fair amount of walking, so I definitely recommend wearing comfortable shoes. One tip: if you're planning to visit and don't have your own vehicle, make sure to purchase the ticket option that includes transportation. It will make things much easier. Also keep in mind that there aren't many food options nearby. Unless you're planning to walk quite a distance, it's a good idea to eat beforehand or plan your meal for after the tour. There's also a small museum on the property that's worth checking out. It's close by and provides additional background and stories that help give more context to the plantation's history. Overall, this was a very informative and meaningful tour, and I would definitely recommend it if you're visiting the area.
