The views are fantastic. I stopped for a drink and a snack before an off-roading trip. The inside of the store is full of souvenirs, knick-knacks, etc. I was able to pickup a drink and a snack and move on. The cashier was friendly. The outside is kind of run-down. There is a bridge from the tower over the parking lot that ends in broken boards and potential serious injury. I wouldn't walk on it. Overall, meh. It's in a great spot, but they could invest in their business a little more.

We did a couple of short trails but the monster was the Appalachian Trail to Mount Rogers Loop. It's logged at 14.3 miles but we ended up logging around 15.2 miles with various trips off trail to check out. The first part of this trail is fine. You walk through areas where some of the wild ponies hangout. Sometimes you can catch wild cattle too(which we did, but not until we were on our way out). The off trail to Mount Rogers is also fairly easy. If you're coming down from Mount Rogers and taking the loop around the mountain, make sure you have plenty of water and maybe some kind of snack for energy. There is a little section from mile 8-12 that almost put me down. It reminded me of a dehydration episode I had in Montana a few years ago. This time I had all the water I needed, but I'm so glad I had food for energy. There's a little section where you gain so much elevation in such a short amount of time... those types of sections always make my legs want to give up. I powered through with some breaks, but it'd help if that section were at the beginning instead of near the end. If I ever do that loop again, I'll take it counter-clockwise. Grayson Highlands is an amazing place that stands on its own in the area. The AT runs through it, but the ponies and cattle and any other animal you might run into make the place magical. Being at the top is also nice. You can see mountains and landscape for miles. It's also a decent place to camp in my opinion since it's so wide open. It can be a bit windy at the top, though. On our trail, there was a fair bit of downed trees, so be aware that you might have to climb, walk around, or whack your way through portions if any storms have rolled through. Watch the weather because it can change fast, but honestly, just prepare for it. You're going to have a unique experience, whether you have to battle fog early in the morning or once the sun comes out. We also hit a patch of drizzly rain, but it didn't last long. We were able to see it coming and adjust our speed to let it pass. Grayson is a state park, so it doesn't have all the amenities that a national park has, but it does connect to some national forests/parks, and it's a beautiful/well-maintained place. Good job Virginia for keeping this place pristine. I realize that not everyone seeks out the long trails. The good thing about Grayson is that there are various trails. You can find 2-5 mile trails, 5-9 mile trails, 10-15 mile trails, and I think there are 1 or 2 that are even longer! There's something for everyone here.

They also host overnight camping and are part of the Appalachian Trail as well. $10 to park isn't bad, but there wasn't an attendant when we first got there. I doubled back after we did the first trail so I wouldn't get fined or anything. We heard parking fills up fast so we got there early, but there were actually still plenty of spots by the time we were ready to leave in the early afternoon (we arrived at like 8am).

It was…read moreNovember, so many of the seasonal campers were gone and the bath house closed, but we were made aware of that when we made our reservation. We had a full hookup site, so not having a bath house wasn't a problem. There isn't cell service, but there was wifi. It was a little spotty, but worked enough for us to check messages daily. Everyone we came across, including Kevin (the owner), was incredibly friendly and hospitable. There's not many places you go that people motion for you to come over and pull up chairs for you to join them. We placed several games of horseshoes, it can be addictive. We went ahead and made our reservation to return in the spring since peak season runs from April to September and they stock trout 4 times a week during those months. The campground stays hopping during that time and there don't seem to be many nightly sites. Most sites are occupied by seasonal campers that pay the winter storage fee as well. Overall, Rainbow Campground is a good choice if you are looking for a spot at Big Tumbling with friendly folks and necessary amenities. If you are looking for bells and whistles and a commercial type of place, then this is not the place for you. Leave these sites for those of us that appreciate a relaxing weekend away in a place that truly welcomes you.

TWO yrs ago (5/2014) I complained about their cancelation fees and guess what....I went to make reservations for May 2016, and because I made this "complaint" and he doesnt want to put up with campers with compliants, I am not allowed to make reservations and camp there any longer!!! Really????Two years ago, I did say something about his $56.00 to cancel reservation fee being rather steep, especially when I had a friend that was coming in the same day & would take my spot ............ I put it behind me, infact had forgotten about it....BUT, NOT Walter of Hungry Horse East, VA who does not need "campers" business!!!! I was so hurt - really, since all my friends are going...and that is what I told him, I have to tell my friends, I cant go??? Yep he said - go to Iron Mountain .... First, it had to support a vegan diet (which I wound up upgrading to vegetarian after I made the reservations -- go figure) and second, it needed to be within driving distance. A third, albeit minor, desire was that it not be a 'factory' spa, where clients are pushed through the treatments like autos on an assembly line. My search was primarily on google maps, since that gave me the ability to see the distance and click directly on the links to see what the property was like. I quickly zeroed in on Eupepsia as a viable candidate. The website is gorgeous, the amenities appealing. So I made the reservation, thinking "it's only for 4 nights -- even if it's not quite what I'm looking for, I'll be fine." About 2 seconds after I pushed the "reserve" button, I got a call! From Eupepsia! Wanting to know what I was looking for and to make sure that it was a good fit. Wow. That has never happened before. And the woman I was talking to sounded so very, very nice. I was to discover that she is, indeed, very very nice. In fact, everyone at Eupepsia is very, very nice. They are gentle people who work hard to make your stay refreshing, healing, and delightful. The Eupepsia property includes a working farm, with A2A2 cows, greenhouses, a milpita, a creamery where the best cheese is made, a chocolate factory for small batch amazing chocolate, a bakery, and many other authentic elements that makes the promise of Farm to Table completely real. Well, I must add: somethings cannot easily be grown in Virginia, so those things are brought in but only from the best suppliers. For example, the wheat for their bread is imported from France. The dining is family style, which adds to the charm. More food than you could possibly eat is served at each meal, and if you happen to arrive late, a fresh serving of the hot dishes is brought to you. The chef is amazing. He really understands food and every meal is cooked that day, from scratch. For special occassions, he has been known to make a cake. While I was there, a vegan guest with a ton of food allergies had a birthday -- he made a cake that was possibly the best I have ever eaten that met all of the requirements of that guest. It is a small resort -- only 20 or so people at a time are guests. You are known, your needs are known, and you are catered to. It is not crowded and you can mingle, or not, as you like. The rooms are expansive and elegant in their simplicity. The sports facilities are awesome. The spa facilities are really great -- I particularly liked the water bicycle. If you are into hiking, the surrounding mountains are gorgeous and the air is fresh. The menu of treatments available is extensive, but I would encourage you to talk with the staff and explain any issues you are having, healthwise. I had suffered a series of falls in March that left me with whip lash like symptoms in my lower back that I was simply not able to conquer (and my doctor had no suggestions, except "maybe try a massage"). I explained all this stuff to the staff and they consulted with experts and presented me with a treatment that I did not at all understand. BUT while the treatment was in progress, I felt the pain starting to ebb. By the time the treatment was over, my lower back was fine -- I could stand up easily for the first time in months. Later, I discovered I could roll over in bed without being in agony. The next day, I discovered I could exercise without pain. And days later, I'm still pain free. So. If you are looking for a small, intimate retreat where you will be treated with respect, fed with the best food ever, and given the opportunity to heal or just relax in a gorgeous setting amongst genuinely kind, caring people, give Eupepsia a try. I loved my shorter stays which were quick escapes where I could relax and recharge, but this time, I stayed 2 weeks and could really feel a difference. I got more into the pace of things which is smooth and steady and it gave me the time to go beyond just relaxation but to reconnect with myself. There's something special about Eupepsia which I can't even describe in words because its just a beautiful feeling that you get once you arrive and this time I felt its impact even more so, even after I left... The staff are amazing and truly make you feel like part of their family, and considerate to the minutest detail. The food is phenomenal and with such a creative menu - I would never imagine vegetarian food could be so good! There's such a variety of treatments to try, all of which are amazing. But this time I tried the manual lymphatic drainage massage and it was a big highlight for me - probably the best I've ever had (and I've tried a few!). It's amazing because every time I go there's something new to try out. On my last trip I also did an ayurvedic consultation and that was a big eye opener. It was great because she walked me through the Boutique to select products for my body type (which is a treasure trove as well!) and gave me some guidance and tips which I've carried home with me. I can't say enough good things about Eupepsia. It's a truly magical experience every time!
