It appears to be at 146 Newton Street, Brighton. The Parks Commissioner Banks from the City of Newton excludes everyone from use of the park unless they pay $70-$75 dollars for a dog license and permit " medallion." They charge $100.00 for any dog from outside of Newton to use the park. The park is very muddy and appears to be in part in Brighton. (Elmhurst Rd is end of Newton). Park is very nice, human atmosphere is not. When we arrived, our licensed dogs on a leash were attacked by two off leash dogs already there. Adding insult to injury, instead of help or apology, we were repeatedly yelled at by one of the dog owners. Unfriendly, the 5pm Club seems to call the shots there. Dog owners beware. read more

Just went to bring my dog here to play and it appears the animal control is taking over. You can't have your dog there unless you have an off leash medallion which you can get from the city of Newton clerks office. Once you have that permit, you can only have the dogs play in the small fenced in area. I am assuming something happened? read more

Great dog park. The off leash area is now both the smaller wood chip area and the large grass field. New Balance graciously allows parking at 145 Newton St in Brighton though the park is technically Newton. There is no water source so bring your own. Being a Newton dog park you have to have a Newton off leash license ($65) which is a shame IMO because it unnecessary gatekeeping and it would be nice to have more dogs in this gorgeous park. Classic Newton. This is the only reason for a 4 rather than a 5. The animal control officer will give you a pamphlet if he sees ya so at least you get one free pass. read more

This is my go-to Dog Park. I love in Brighton so it's pretty close. It's completely fenced in which is really nice. In a way it has 4 sections. The main play area for all dogs, a smaller fenced in area at the very front that I think is technically for smaller dogs but all dogs go in. There's also a "forest" area as I like to call it, where my dog loves to go exploring. He loves sniffing around and navigating between all the trees rather than always just running out in the main field. He's a curious little guy and has gotten to the age that he doesn't need/want to play with all the dogs the whole time. There's also a back area that has a gate that leads out to the neighborhood as well as a small fenced in park for kids with swings,slides, etc where dogs aren't allowed. In the winter it gets pretty nasty but that's where the smaller fenced in area came in real handy. There are trash cans only for pet waste so take home and throw away what you bring in! There isn't a water fountain for the pups so bringing water is highly suggested! There aren't always bags so always have some on hand in case! There are regulars (like Dez and I) and newbies which Dez always loves meeting new pups :) read more

Very popular neighborhood park. Lots of dog walkers bring packs of dogs here throughout the day. At times you can easily have 30+ pooches running around. Large park though, so you can spend time with your dog playing catch on the other end away from all the others if you wish. Park is also home to a little league team. They have a nice little diamond set up. If you bring your dog here do the kids a favor and clean up after yourselves and try to keep your dog of the diamond. Sadly this is something I see the dogs walkers not taking care of. There is also a fenced in playground there as well. Swings and slides, all secluded down at the opposite send of where most people hang out with there dogs at. Park is also great for flag football games, frisbees (watch out for dogs) I have also noticed a local school using the field for lacrosse practice. read more

As a Newton dog owner I thought I should comment about the use of Newton dog parks. 1) There are several off-leash dog parks in Newton; only 3 are fully fenced in. While dogs are allowed in all parks, they are only allowed to be off leash in the parks, or parts of parks, in the designated "dog parks". Hunnewell Park is a general use park with a fenced-in, off-leash dog park. 2) Like every city, Newton dogs must be licensed in Newton. "Visiting" dogs must be licensed in their home cities. 3) In order to pay for the special off-leash dog parks, Newton requires dogs to have a special license to use the off-leash parks. The rationale, presumably, is that only a small percentage of Newton taxpayers use these parks so the costs should be paid by those who do use them. The fees: Spayed or neutered Newton dogs $60.00 all other dogs $65.00. [Non-Newton Dogs $100.00]. You also have to certify that your dog has not been a problem. 4) For your fee you get poop bags, poop bag collection barrel, some level of maintenance, and, in theory, some confidence that the other dogs (with their dog park tag) are appropriately socialized, etc. A Parks & Rec employee does periodically check. read more

This is the best dog park I have ever visited with my Boston Terrier, Abby. It is huge -- maybe two football fields long and entirely fenced. It is certainly big enough that if Abby needs some down time from playing with a group of dogs we can easily move to another area (this is a major difference between Hunnewell and every other dog park we've visited). The only downsides are that not everyone cleans up after their dogs and Abby did have one bad experience here with two Rottweillers, though admittedly this could happen at any park. read more

This is a pretty awesome place to bring your dog if your dog likes other dogs. There is a fenced-in area on one end of the park, and the rest is a grassy field for sports. Many dog owners do choose to leave the smaller fenced area to play ball with their dog in the field. One warning however - there is a sign posted at the entrance that says you need to keep your dog inside the fenced area and that you need a dog tag from the city of Newton. I have never encountered a police officer coming by to check for tags, and I've been here dozens of times, but I have heard from other people that they received verbal warnings. So just be wary of this. I am pretty sure this is a rule posted in most dog parks. For the most part, owners are pretty good about picking up after their dogs and leaving the park if their dog is misbehaving. The winter melt can be a little disgusting, which tends to be true of all dog parks unfortunately. Don't wear your nicest sneakers to the dog park. Tip: If you show up between 10:30am and noon on a weekday, you may encounter LOTS of dogs. I've observed that this tends to be the period where the local dog walkers and daycare folks come by with their carfuls of dogs. This is a GREAT time to swing by if your dog is very social. read more

Great dog park, although I'm not sure that I'd go there late at night by myself, since there are not through streets (which really actually adds to the greatness of the dog park). Very clean and taken care of. Right next to the shoe factory, and you can park on that side to enter into the dog park (I had some trouble finding out how to get into the dog park). read more

It can get a little muddy, but it's a great size and super convenient to Brighton and Brookline!!

Our pup Archer had a great time in the field with the others. All seem very well behaved and natured. High sun hits and they run to the shade to pants and rest together. Great things to say about New Balance and what they have arranged for us here. read more

I went here today after reading the yelp reviews with my sweet big black dog. The park itself is a large field surrounded by a perimeter of trees and a fence. Within the fenced area is a second small fenced area (the real dog park) with a fence about waist high, and yet another fenced area with playground equipment. There were 3 other people, each with an off leash dog. The others had been there before with their pets. About 45 minutes into doggie playtime, a policeman showed up and told us the pets needed to be leashed and that we would receive a verbal warning instead of the typical $50 fine. He also explained that all dogs using any newton dog park need ed to have a permit. And be licensed by Newton.. I expressed surprise when he told us the dog park was the small area in the front of the park, even though the entire area was fenced. He was a very nice man, but wow these rules seem to be a big pain, we were the only folk in the entire park- it was pretty much empty. The other owners were very upset at this and stated they weren't going to stop running their dogs there but I think I will be looking somewhere else. I have lived in texas and Ohio, and neither state requires you pay a permit fee to use a public park. It seems like you might as well start charging children to use the playground equipment, too:/ read more
