We called ahead and booked a table for a medium sized group. When we turned up there weren't too many customers (alarm bells should have been ringing but we continued anyway). The chicken was awesome - cooked perfectly and on top of a big arancini ball which was full of flavour. Unfortunately everyone else was pretty disappointed with their meals. Gravlax salad was covered in salt for some reason, they'd renamed meatloaf as 'compressed pulled pork' which caught out a few people, and their wedges were completely inedible and soggy. We actually sent all the wedges back and the staff vented about how the good wedges were expensive so they bought the cheap ones and you just can't expect any better than that. They threw them in the oven a bit longer but basically they came back hotter but still inedible. On the plus side though you can take your receipt to the cellar door next door (Gartlelmann Wines) and get 10% off.

I'm not sure if it was reserved or not, but every pair of diners who entered the cafe were loudly told those tables were only for parties of 4. Every interaction with the hostess was uncomfortable, as if I was getting into trouble from a headmistress. The menu has a lot of really interesting-sounding Macedonian food, but it's lost amongst an enormous list of usual suspects - like burgers. I chose avocado on toast and a hot chocolate; my dining partner chose french toast and a flat white. My hot chocolate was made cappuccino-style, with foam, and was one of the better hot chocolates I've had in Newcastle. I could see myself calling in for a hot chocolate takeaway if I lived nearby. Breakfast was disappointing, for both the price point. The smashed avocado on toast ($15) was two small pieces of ciabatta with unseasoned avocado and feta on it. It was underwhelming and overpriced for the portion size, especially comparing other cafes in Newcastle, though the avocado was fresh. The french toast ($14) was a single slice of wonder bread-style toast with maple syrup and berries in little jars. Again, it was almost funny because it was so underwhelming. Overall, the meal kind of felt thrown together, or pre-made. Overall, I wouldn't return. The food is basically home-made, in that I can easily make at the same standard at home. Breakfast needs to totally be reconsidered. The cafe is beautiful but needs atmosphere - music, happy staff. It has amazing history, and I think if they trimmed the menu down to focus on the Macedonian dishes, this cafe could be incredible.

We walked in on what seemed to be a very busy Friday and were seated within 10 minutes. We order a dish with lamb chops and one with duck. Both dishes came our very good. Meat here was tender and super flavorful with the sauce. I was very happy with the choices and we made however we were both still hungry after finishing this meal. We only had the main course, but it was definitely on the lighter side. The people here were friendly and very kind, but they didn't check on us the entire meal. Our water was emptied pretty quickly and they never came back around. Other than portion size and lack of service I have no complaints!
