Bobby Flay's best gumbo win is what sent me to South Boston, and let me tell you, the hype is real. Spoiler: I made it through TSA with leftovers. That's how good it was. I tried the mac and cheese, cornbread, and of course Lambo's award-winning gumbo. The mac was a solid 10/10. Creamy, flavorful, and pure comfort, even with the breadcrumbs (iykyk). The spoon bread was just okay for me. It leaned a bit too buttery and slightly undercooked, but shoutout to my amazing server and bartender for kindly comping it. Now the gumbo absolutely ate. As someone who loves New Orleans food, I know good gumbo, and Lambo truly gets it. Every bite was packed with meat, bold flavor, and soul. I came here for my birthday brunch with high hopes, especially since this restaurant is known for its gumbo and has the reputation of beating Bobby Flay in a cooking competition. Unfortunately, the experience was underwhelming overall. I ordered the signature gumbo and was very disappointed. It was extremely watery, heavily herb-flavored, and lacked the rich, traditional New Orleans-style roux I was expecting. For $25, the portion was also disappointing and only 2 shrimp, about 4 pieces of sausage, and one small piece of lump crab. The rice paired with it was actually flavorful and one of the better parts of the dish, but it couldn't save the gumbo itself. The Vermont butter biscuits were one of the highlights, absolutely delicious when served warm. They were soft, buttery, and flavorful. My only complaint is that the portion was too small. The brisket was tender, but it was served extremely cold, and the BBQ sauce that came with it was also ice cold, which really took away from the dish. The mac and cheese tasted exactly like frozen Stouffer's and was honestly the biggest disappointment of the meal. The fried pickles had good flavor, though I ordered them expecting more okra in the mix and there was barely any. The potato salad was surprisingly excellent, well-balanced, creamy, and one of the best things we tried. The cowboy steak bites had potential but were extremely overcooked, oily, and lacked flavor. Definitely not something I would order again. Service was inattentive throughout our visit. No one checked in to ask how the food was, remove menus, or acknowledge that I barely touched my gumbo. I had ordered two bowls, and only after bringing it to the manager's attention was it corrected. The atmosphere was another downside. The music was so loud that it was hard to hear the people at my table. We specifically made a 3:30 reservation because the website stated live music would end at that time until later in the evening, but that wasn't the case. The strawberry guava margarita was very good, but overall this wasn't the birthday brunch experience I had hoped for. I was a bit disappointed with my reservation, which, by the way, I highly recommend. My Valentine and I made reservations a week ago. We walked in and it was packed with a one man band, who was great but it was sooooo loud! They took us over to the window, looking out at the hardware store. It was like a little space to have more people. We were on stools. Not looking at each other. I went to the hostess and told her our situation. She gave us a few minutes then said that she had a table by the one man band. We didn't mind because it was so loud anywhere you sat. Lots of younger people. Which we didn't mind either. It is a fun place. We ordered drinks with an appetizer, Cowboy Steak. So tender and tasty!!! After a few more drinks, we decided to order our meals. It's 5:30 at this point. We didn't truly get seated until 4:30. The waitress said she had to check if we could order because with reservation seating, they give you 90 minutes? She worked it out so that we could stay. My Valentine ordered Gumbo...he loved it! I got chicken fried steak (ribeye) and it was delicious along with country mashed potatoes. It's not cheap but worth it. Parking is a bit tough. If you no show or cancel within 24 hours they will charge you. We had a reservation but we ended up sitting at the bar so we wouldn't have to wait. Let's start with the only good thing: Hunters Kitchen and Bar looks nice. The place has a cozy, southern cabin vibe that almost tricks you into thinking the food is about to be good. It's not. The food was straight-up bad. No flavor, no care, nothing memorable in a good way. The customer service was just as disappointing--barely attentive, not welcoming, and clearly not interested in the dining experience. I go out to eat to be taken care of, not ignored. My friend ordered the pulled BBQ (forgot to take a picture), and she rated it a 4/10. The beignets? Also a 4/10. Honestly, that might've been generous. It was my first time coming there but we had reservations for 12 but the parking situation was horrible but no fault to the restaurant. Took some of my family 30 min to find parking. So back to Hunters, I would have to say this isn't a kid friendly place. Our table for 12 was next to the fireplace and speakers which sucked but like I said I can't blame them for that. The service was amazing and so was the food. I also love country music so it didn't bother me lol. We had a reservation for 1PM which is the beginning of peak, but we were seated immediately which was great! Our server (not sure if she ever told us her name) was sweet and very attentive. For starters, we got the Popcorn Chicken Mac and Cheese and the Honey Butter Cornbread. Popcorn Chicken: nicely battered and the taste was great! Nice chunk sizes and the honey mustard was a nice addition. Mac and Cheese: definitely a must have! Very cheesy, pasta cooked to perfection, good portion size. Honey Butter Cornbread: the BEST. I have tried it multiple times in the south as Cornbread Souffle and I was THRILLED to know it is prepared the same. The flavor, consistency, and portions are top tier. Our table ordered two for the cause, pleasantly surprised and should remain a staple on the menu. We were pretty stuffed with the starters, but got meals to see what more Hunters had to offer. If they dialed back the salt im sure it'd be much more enjoyable. Food: 9:/10. Food alone would make me come back. Atmosphere: you can certainly see who this restaurant caters to... we got lots of weird stares. This is a SOUTHIE restaurant, the FOOD is just Southern. Saturday night during college football season? Bad idea to come to Hunter's for dinner. I wanted to go to South Boston to meander around, eat at Fat Baby, and go bowling. My mother wanted southern food, so we headed to Hunter's instead. Since we had a filling lunch we ordered a few smaller plates: Hushpuppies, BBQ Ribs, and Lambo's Gumbo. The hushpuppies are big, too big really, and they're served on a bed of whipped butter. Half a cup of butter would have been too much butter for these things, but I think they served them on more than that. The pumpkin spice flavor in the butter was interesting, but I would have preferred a small plate with 6-8 smaller hushpuppies with a little spicy remoulade or something more snacky. But overall they tasted fine and despite their large size they were cooked through. The ribs were good, tender enough and all that, but they were missing something I couldn't quite put my finger on that makes good ribs so delicious. You know the ones I mean- can't stop eating them, you go a little caveman on them and lick your fingers after for just a little more of those delicious ribs. The ribs at Hunter's? No. The menu labled the gumbo as the signature dish and Google informed me that this was a Beat Bobby Flay winning dish. Shrimp, crab, andouille sausage, and Charleston rice sounded good and I was curious. Was it good? Sure, best dish of the three we ordered. The seafood was tender, the gumbo was flavorful, the rice was nice. But it was also spicy which the menu doesn't say, but I suppose you should just assume. Hours later I remembered why eating spicy gumbo on vacation isn't always the right move for me. I should have learned this after my trip to New Orleans, but I am a sucker for all carbs. I was happy with my choice, for a bit anyway. But I will say if you are like me- order the gumbo but have a pepto chaser. This trip was in late September and the menu on their website looks different now, so perhaps with that change things have improved. But a restaurant is more than just its food, so I'll also add the atmosphere was awful. The decor provides a certain ambiance that makes it seem like a nice place for dinner, but it's just not. Too loud for conversation, too many college age kids in here drinking and not eating, and they have zero sense of personal space. Sitting at our table for two near the bar we were jostled by frat boys the entire meal. They'd apologize and then do it again. Our server disappeared after dropping off the food and didn't come back the rest of the time until it was time for the check. Which we asked for and then waited, and waited, and continued to wait for. Was the place busy? Kind of, though those of us at tables were the minority. Ruining your guests dining experience by overfilling the bar area is a bad idea. Maybe there's a better time of the week to go for a nice dinner, but it sure wasn't the night I went. read more

I'll start by saying that I usually am not here for "southern" restaurants in Boston because...it's Boston. LOL. But I was pleasantly surprised by Hunter's Kitchen & Bar. While parking is definitely a challenge (not their fault), I found the very last spot at the parking lot around the corner. I met here for dinner with a friend who had parking woes for a while, so I just sat around and took in the scenery. The wooden walls made it feel like I was back in Oklahoma. We ordered the mac & cheese with brisket, candied yams, and biscuits. We thought we were just going to have those as appetizers, but they were filling, and I even took some of the Mac & cheese home because it was such a substantial portion. It was the bomb, and I really enjoyed the candied yams. They were a bit softer than I usually have them, but that was not a bad thing, and they had all the right spices. The biscuits were also a nice touch. I ordered chicken & waffles to go, so that I could have something for lunch the next day. My friend and I decided to come check out brunch here on Saturday and we were so glad we did! We came in before the crowd and were able to sit inside by the window. Greeted instantly we were able to put some drinks in while we had some time to look over the menu. I went with a virgin mojito, and it was sweet and refreshing. For an appetizer we went with cornbread. OMG! This cornbread was everything and more. The cornbread was savory and sweet topped with a plentiful amount of butter! You must order this if you go here. For my meal I went with the smash burger. It had 2 patties with melty cheddar cheese, avocado, crispy onions and serrano aioli. The bun was perfect for this thick sandy. I went here for dinner and drinks at 8pm on a Tuesday. I wasn't expecting it to be as loud as it was for a Tuesday. The music was very loud so people were yelling just to hear each other. The volume was over 90 decibels according to my watch. It was hard to have a conversation at my table, which was made worse by having a very wobbly table because if I tried to lean forward, then my drink would nearly spill. Hunter's Kitchen and Bar is a southern comfort restaurant in Southie. I came here with two friends on a Monday evening for dinner. None of us has been here, and was recommended to one of my friend by a coworker. For starters we got the fried pickles and the pastrami loaded fries. I got the shrimp and grits as my entree. My friend got the signature gumbo dish as her entree. The pastrami loaded fries and fried pickles are very heavy dishes, I would recommend getting either one or the other, unless if you have a decent party. Also to factor in that the entree portions here run on the larger side. Fried pickles were great. Pastrami loaded fries were alright, nothing too out of the ordinary. We ended up taking most of the fries and pickles home. The shrimp and grits was alright. The taste and flavor were there, but I would say it was definitely on the saltier side. I did not end up finishing up my dish. My friend had the Gumbo and that was also a bit saltier than what we both would've liked. Again, flavors were definitely there, just the saltiness overwhelms the entirety of the dish. Overall the entire meal was more on the saltier side. I came here for brunch on a Sunday morning with my friends. Despite being the first people to walk in the restaurant, we were seated in the corner right by the window, which we thought was slightly odd. Our waitress was attentive and nice. For drinks, we were all planning on getting hot coffee, but found out they don't offer it. Breakfast without coffee? Pass. We were slightly stumped when looking at the menus, since some of the items seemed misplaced within section headers. For example, Hunter's has a parfait on the brunch menu, but it's listed as an appetizer. In my opinion, a yogurt cup isn't something that you share with friends before you start the meal. It seems like they just needed to reprint the menus and reorganize the layout. I ordered the cornbread, and my friends had the ribs and the fried chicken Benedict. Everyone loved their food. The cornbread was served right out of a cast iron skillet-- it was piping hot! It was more like pudding than cake, but it was still great. The ambiance of the restaurant is really cool; country music playing through the speakers, taxidermy wall art, and rustic wood paneling all enhance the Southern vibe of the restaurant. Went for dinner on Monday and the restaurant was out of shrimp, meaning no BBQ shrimp, shrimp&grits, gumbo, etc. This is a Southern restaurant and shrimp consists of half of the menu, how are you out of shrimp? So we decided to order ribs -- well they're out of that too. So what do you have? They should've given us a heads up before we sat down that the notable half of their menu was gone. Not to even mention some things we did order we just never received. We ordered brisket and never got it, and I especially remember telling our waitress because she asked if we wanted the family size. The service was terrible, our waitress ignored us the entire time. Not to even mention the portions were miniature, the biscuits were the size of munchkins and $2 a piece. read more
