Due to his diagnosis, learning to read, understanding the alphabet, phonics have all been an uphill battle for him. Throw in covid and unfortunately he got further behind. So, in steps Sylvan. (He had a private tutor, who was a substitute teacher), who tutored him once and then quit because she didn't feel she was a good fit. I met with Ms. Gabrielle, the Center Director who was so welcoming and really understood a lot of my concerns. She addressed one of my concerns regarding my son needing accommodations to see and hear letters and sounds and she was able to make this accommodation for him and if not, it was a deal breaker for us. Second, Our private speech therapist had a 40 minute conversation with Ms. Gabrielle about how my son learns, where he's at with his language and what not to say because he honestly doesn't understand what that means. She has proven herself to be so instrumental in my sons ability to learn. She has also communicated this to my sons teachers. In about 4 months, my son has almost closed a years worth of learning. His teachers, Ms. Jen, Ms. Heather, Ms. Mimi And Ms. Rachel are treasures!! They really know how to teach and having them at sylvan is an asset and I'm hoping the directors notice this. These teachers truly care and I can see my sons self esteem and confidence surge! Thank You So Much Ms. Gabrielle and to my sons teachers!

My assessment is....its fun to go, but there is no incentive to practice handwriting on the 6 days my son isn't in class. They make art projects using fingers in shaving cream and use tweezers to grasp small items. Additionally they have an OT gym, which breaks up the time in handwriting class to work on larger arm muscle strength. Its expensive but what else are you going to do if you have a child with poor handwriting? They have a monopoly on this common childhood problem but thier efforts are not very effective. The old adage, "Practice, Practice, Practice" is the only way to improve handwriting, and they don't teach that rant to the kids like they should.

My daughter suffered emotional abuse from her teachers, coming home frequently scared to go to school because her teachers yell, hold her wrists in a forceful manner when she makes mistakes. Because they are not certified or given adequate training (only every three months according to director with non accredited trainers) "teachers" are not skilled or knowledgeable in teaching practices that are developmentally appropriate and in alignment with Texas standards. They are unaware on how to utilize redirection, positive reinforcement and engagement tools and resources that support the whole child. As a certified experienced educator and multilingual program director myself I am distraught I let my child go to this daycare for over a year and advise other to stay away from an institution that does not have the abilities to teach young children. There are other multicultural and multilingual accredited schools in the area if looking for that type of care. Lastly, The entire Spanish schoolhouse board of directors does not have a single verified educator at the table speaking for quality education and what that actually means- their CEO is a graphic designer and many on the board are business and operations minded sources of knowledge. This place is a Godsend! Our daughter has been going to Grade Power Learning in Garland since…read moreApril - and has improved her reading by over 3 grade levels since she started! Not only that, but she has STRAIGHT A's for the first time since 1st grade! I am so thankful for the team at Grade Power - from their initial testing, they voiced concerns that we already had about our daughter possibly having some learning differences. We had her tested through her school in 2nd grade, and they told us she was ADHD and should be medicated. We disagreed, and didn't medicate, but she continued to struggle in school. Thanks to Grade Power reconfirming our concerns, we got outside testing completed and lo and behold, she is Dyslexic! She has been on a personal tutoring plan at Grade Power and now also has a 504 in place at school to get additional accommodations to help her learn with her learning differences. She even is enjoying reading - something I never thought would happen! The ONLY negative I might be able to add is the security of the facility...maybe it's because they aren't dealing with very small children so it isn't a big deal but anyone could be dropping my son off or picking him up.
