I am so impressed with the structure of Huntington's tutoring. I appreciate the fact that Huntington as provided space and time for the student to reflect on their teachers, the strategies they have learned, practice tests they have taken and the communication with parents. I have had a very frustrating time trying to get information from them. I've called four times and they took my name and number to call me back. While they've called back, it has been an hour or two later, right in the middle of the classes that I teach. Since times and prices are not posted on the website, it is frustrating that I'm not able to get that information. My sons have been going to Huntington learning center in Skokie for about 3 years. Before I sent my sons to Huntington, I sent my older son to a different test prep place in Glenview. When my older son took his first Act, I wasn't impressed. As a result, I sent my older son to Huntington. He had a good score. Now my younger son has to take an Act test in September, I decided to send him Huntington in skokie. Hunting staff are very helpful especially Maria. I want to mention Maria because she goes out her way to help students. She checks my son's progress and inform us what he needs to focus on etc... I just want to thank Maria and Huntington! Our daughter came to Huntington after taking the ACT for the first time. While her English and Math subscores were strong, she hoped to raise her reading and science scores. Working with Jennifer, she took a practice exam to identify specific areas for improvement. Importantly, they recommended some specific changes in how she approached the questions. We then were able to schedule one-on-one sessions once or twice a week for six weeks prior to re-taking the exam, where they helped her refine her test-taking strategies. We couldn't have been happier when we received the scores from the second exam. Her composite increased from 31 to 33, and we saw even more improvement in her subscores - particularly in science - than we'd hoped we would! We highly recommend the group at Huntington - they were incredibly helpful and flexible, and were able to create a personalized plan for our daughter that really worked. read more

The center is able to customize a learnning plan based on the individual needs of your child. My son worked with Kerry. He prepared for his first ACT test here and achieved a good score. However, he felt he could do better, so we continued with a second round of prep in areas he could improve. Upon taking it the second time, he improved 3 points! We are over the moon happy with the guidance and help we received here. Kerry was also helpful in guiding us through the process of what is and isn't recommended in registering for the test. We came to this Huntington based on a recommendation and couldn't be happier! My son is a junior, so the summer between his sophomore and junior year, we came in to meet with Cheri and discuss a strategy for how we were going to prepare for college admission. We decided to a little prep for the PSAT and then focus on the ACT. As part of the discussion, we also talked about expectations, potential majors in colleges, and colleges that he was interested. All of this was good because it was really the start of my son thinking about his future. We signed up for test prep - we decided to do twice a week. It is one-on-one prep, and the areas of focus are based on a practice exam. They recommended an amount of hours needed to improve his score to where we wanted to be, but it is completely flexible. You can do more hours or less hours depending on your needs and your finances. We never had a problem scheduling the actual tutoring sessions, even on weekends. My son really liked the tutors. I never met them, but they sounded like an interesting cast of characters, all of whom were very smart. While you don't get to choose the tutor, he seemed to get the same 3 or 4 people throughout the 3 months of preparation. The only thing that my son didn't like was that it was a bit noisy in the back room where students are being tutored. I think that he would have preferred a quieter space to work. So, we don't have the PSAT results back, but that is really less important to us. We did get his ACT score back, and we saw a 4 point jump from the practice test that he took before he started tutoring to the score that we just received. Obviously, the improvement in his ACT score is a large component of why we are so pleased. But on top of this, the scheduling was easy and the tutors were great. I definitely think that for my son, this was better than sitting in a group session and preparing. read more

Extremely expensive, they wanted over $3000 to prepare my daughter for the SSAT. It was a three month program. Will only allow you to work with them on a plan/program. They do not offer hourly or weekly tutoring plans. They will offer to set you up with a loan company. They pay their tutors next to nothing no matter what their experience is. I can't recommend this place enough for ACT tutoring. I am so happy that we found this place for our daughter, who is a junior in high school. We first learned about this center from the father of one of my younger son's soccer teammates. When he mentioned that he owned the Huntington Learning Center in River Forest, Ill., I had no idea such a service existed. One of my best friends had signed up for ACT prep classes through Kaplan and encouraged me to do the same. But after taking a couple of classes and realizing that the math instructor knew less about solving problems than her own daughter, my friend canceled her tutoring through Kaplan and asked for her money back. The time and care that the owner of the River Forest Huntington Learning Center took to explain to me what services they offer and the best timeline for doing test prep were fantastic, despite the fact that he knew that we did not live close to his center, and he referred us to the Skokie location (each location is independently operated). One key thing that he recommended is private tutoring for my daughter instead of signing up for the "test prep classes" with a group of kids. And I think this is the best advice. If your child is already scoring in the 80-90% on the tests and only needs tutoring in very specific areas, then it's really a waste of time to take a general class that goes over everything covered on the test. Private tutoring zeroes in on very specific types of problems that your child is having problems on the test, and that is the key to truly bringing up your child's test score. From our first meeting with Kerry Butters, the director of the Huntington Learning Center in Skokie, Ill., we felt like we had someone who was completely knowledgeable about college entrance exams in our corner, helping us to map out our timeline for taking the ACT and two Level 2 SAT exams in two specific subjects (which some competitive colleges require in addition to the ACT and regular SAT). We began by having my daughter take both a practice ACT and practice SAT to see in which test she was stronger, and we determined that she was better suited for the ACT, so we then mapped out a tutoring schedule the summer after her sophomore year to prepare for the ACT. So far, she has taken the ACT two times, scoring 7 points above her first practice test, and she is planning to take a third time just to try to get a better score. But the scores she has from her first two ACTs are good enough to get her into any college she wants to go to. And she has taken one SAT Level 2 test in Math so far and she scored phenomenally well. A side benefit for my daughter from her Huntington tutoring has been a reduced test anxiety in her classes at school. She is acing all of her AP and Honors classes and we attribute this to the confidence in taking tests that she has gained from Huntington. The money we are spending at Huntington (which is about half of what Kaplan charges for private tutoring) is a great investment in my daughter's future, because the high scores she is getting on her college entrance exams will open doors for her at very competitive colleges. Kerry Butters is a total gem and the reason that the Skokie location is so successful. From staying on top of all the tutoring schedules and timelines for exams, to the little notes of encouragement she writes before every exam to the students, to the follow up immediately after the exams to see how things went, she makes this entire college prep process so much easier and less stressful for both the student and parent. His comprehension was not what it should have been, his math skills were weak, and the exceptional tutors at Huntington Skokie helped get him get on track and raise his grades. I went to Huntington to try and help my daughter improve her ACT score. She's an A/B+ student with a 92% average, but her ACT score didn't match this. I tried test prep with her at home, and hired an individual tutor, as well, but the score didn't budge. We decided to have her take it another time, and went to Huntington to try a different approach. My daughter worked with them for two weeks, two hours a day. She liked her tutors, and felt the skills and insights she learned were helpful. Huntington built up her confidence and a test awareness and savvy she didn't possess before. Her scores arrived this morning and she increased her score by FIVE points!! Yes, 5. We were hoping for a point or two, would have been ecstatic for a three point jump, and she got a five point increase! Every interaction I had with the staff, from director to tutors, was positive, supportive and honest. There were no crazy promises, just a clear description of how they were different and how they believed they could help. My son went here for ACT prep. His English score brought down his overall composite score. Their pretest targeted his problem areas and focused his tutoring on this. Between the first pretest and second his English score went up 5 points. His overall goal was to bring up his composite score up 4 points. They helped him with test taking strategies and timing. He was able to bring up his score from a 28 to a 32. Although the tutoring cost a lot overall, he has already received a merit scholarship that will cover more than the cost of tutoring. read more
