The Mansion itself is not really a hotel, but a destination - the grounds surrounding are similar to that of the Botanical Gardens in Melbourne - perfectly manicured greens, flowers and even a greenhouse. It's the perfect place to take you mum or grandma on a Sunday afternoon. Being a guest at the hotel is just as magical. While it does come off a bit like the hotel in The Shining (you know, really creepy in that old, antique-y way) it is honestly breathtaking. We stayed in a basic room, which while small was still stunning and included a gigantic shower and king size bed. The buffet breakfast the next day was A-OK but the bar was the real standout. It is open until 1am and the bartenders are well-skilled to whip you up whatever your heart desires. A highly recommended hotel when you're after a quick yet very fancy getaway from the hustle and bustle of the CBD.

We were greeted by a friendly receptionist, check in was fast and we were told where the hotel amenities were around us. Our room was small, but had bunks, small desk, small bar fridge, fans, small TV and plenty of power points for chargers etc. The room was tidy. The bathroom/toilets were shared but were kept tidy and had a towels and complimentary soaps etc. We also got a complimentary continental breakfast in the morning including tea, coffee and juices with cereals, toast ad preserves and fruit. The brekkie cost nothing so no complaints here. They also offer free wifi. Outside the hotel there is a tram stop (route no.8) and the South Yarra Train Station so public transport is easily available. I would recommend this hotel to anyone one a budget who wants somewhere basic to sleep! Ticked all boxes!

The room on the 2nd floor was small, containing a bunk bed, small desk and a tv. I noticed that the 'fan' on the ceiling had a remote control - but no blades! The toilet facilities are shared and are clean and practical, but the wait to have a shower became a tad frustrating, constantly having to stick my head out of the door to see if they were free. Continental breakfast is available as a part of the package and although I didn't have any - it looked very edible. All in all - for a budget hotel you can't go wrong. Greatly located, clean and near to transport.

The hotel has underground parking however I find it easier to just park in the carpark outside - the area seems safe enough to leave a car. The lobby reception isn't much and the lift is very skinny so you'll be squeezing in with people during busy times. There are a variety of rooms and I was lucky enough to stay in a 2 bedroom full apartment on the top floor with a huge balcony. This would be ideal for a family for a long stay but for 1 night as a single party - it was definitely a waste of so much space. The hotel has an arrangement with an attached restaurant and they provide room service but during quite limited hours. Pretty good location with a Coles just outside and a few restaurants on the immediate block. If you walk either direction on Mt Alexander Road, you will find little clumps of eateries every few blocks.

Well, I asked the bartender who assured me that the beer had nothing to do with the hotel, and the only reason they were serving it was, well, because of the name. However, this pub actually wasn't bad, and even had a nice outdoor area as well as a pool hall upstairs. A nice place to kill some time.

There isn't a doorman or automatic doors, which was slightly annoying to me since I was traveling heavy. Ashleigh at reception was really nice and helpful. The room was nice (room 811, photos below) - I had a single queen room and I found it to be perfect. The bathroom was pretty sexy and the view was great - you can see Southern Cross Station out the window! I opted for the pre-paid breakfast - note that you book it in advance, but then pay for it later. They had a wonderful spread of hot breakfast and also yogurts, pastries and fruits. I couldn't try everything. The only thing I didn't care for was the carpets in the hallways - it's plush which is nice, but it was really hard to wheel my suitcases to my room. So I took them one at a time. Would stay here again and would recommend.
