Instructions from middle-aged female employee on how to use the machine was "to fill the machine with water and ice, turn the dial and push the button -- you'll figure it out". She was very kurt and exceptionally stingy on providing the ice needed for the machine. At one point she told me to go to the restaurant next door to get ice. On a positive note, the hotel is in a great location but the street was very noisy. Needed to keep the windows open in order to get some air circulating in the room. Additionally, the mini-refrigerator was not cold at all. Did not have a good experience.

I must say it has been a few years since I visited, but since I have taken to Yelp more I realized I should give some high marks to this little bed and breakfast. The Steens Hotel is a small bed and breakfast place near a great, little park. It's in an older building, which makes the experience that much better. There is a lot of charm and character that comes with this hotel. The rooms are a good size for one traveler and have all the amenities a person may need. I was able to walk to parks and to the market from the hotel, but pack your walking shoes because it's a longer walk. The staff was friendly and also made certain to hold my bags on my last day while I explored the city before departing for the train station to head back to Oslo. The breakfast spread was good and there was always tea available with little cookies in the afternoon, which made for a perfect treat after taking a midday nap between my adventures to explore the city. I would highly recommend a local or a foreign traveler to stay at this little place. The price is fair, the place is quaint and clean with character, and it is in a great location. (I will post pictures soon, because this place deserves some more praise through photos.) Tusen takk!

Finding lodging in Bergen is difficult because there's not a ton of availability, it's expensive,…read moreand the downtown / main area is pretty small. We tried many different Airbnbs, hotels downtown were ~$200 (if not more), and were starting to run out of options on places to stay. June is a busy tourist month, so make sure you plan far in advance. We settled on this hotel, but didn't realize quite how far it was from the main area - it's about a 40 minute walk, or a $20 taxi ride from the train station to here (which is about 10 min driving). If you're looking to save money on a hotel by picking this place, just beware there's not a lot of public transit, so what you end up saving you'll end up spending on cabs. The walk is fine - it's flat -- but there's not a ton of stuff to see along the way, and seems fairly deserted. There's not much around this hotel if you're looking for options to eat. We should've just ordered pizza delivery, because by the time we left the hotel to try to find something in walking distance, we ended up having to walk all the way downtown and we were hangry. The hotel itself is fine - it's modern and clean. The beds are comfortable and the bathroom is decently sized. The receptionist was gone for 10-15 minutes (or maybe even longer) when we arrived, which was a little bit annoying. There was a sign that said they had stepped away "for a moment", and left a phone number if we needed to reach him/her. Unfortunately, I didn't have WiFi or a cellphone that I could use, so that was of little use. The receptionist was helpful later when I needed a cab ordered for the morning so that we could go to the airport. A cab from the hotel to the airport will run you ~$40. There's was nothing terribly wrong with the hotel, but for $128, I don't think it's worth the price given the location and how far away / expensive it is to where everything is. If you have a rental car, this could work out just fine for you, but make sure you know what you're signing up for if you don't!

The rooms are quite a tight fit if you have larger suitcases (in a retrofitted historic-building way) but manageable, and the dining is good. That said, for most tourists on a sightseeing schedule, it would be extremely helpful if breakfast was offered before 7:30 a.m. I also did not appreciate having to ask the front-desk clerk for coffee at 7 a.m. I watched her deal with admin and suitcase issues, then claw-grab two cups by the rim to serve me and my spouse. When I slipped over to the self-serve machine in the closed dining room to have a second cup, she chided me for doing so and told me I should have come to her at the desk for it. I did not wish to debate how unsanitary her service had been, but it was not the easiest way to start the morning, and 7 a.m. access to the self-serve would solve that.

There is a wall full of over 40 metal placards with famous people's autographs: Bjorn Borg, Deep Purple, Backstreet Boys, Jerry Seinfeld... When we checked in, we were given an upgrade to a room with 2 double beds (which is odd as I was unable to book 2 double beds). The room was spacious and beds were comfortable. There is free wifi. There was a complimentary breakfast... and dinner! The complimentary dinner was a nice surprise - it was chili with rice, lentil soup, chickpea salad, cucumber salad, quinoa and bread. It was tasty and saved us both money and effort to find a good restaurant. The breakfast was varied and excellent. The hotel boasts a tower with a gorgeous view and it does not disappoint (see photos). We would definitely stay here again! Our only regret was that we only stayed here 1 night!

We hustled with our luggage around the city's pond to Rica Hotel. Walking briskly in the cold, wet weather the trip was about 15 minutes. Due on the early arrival, we were worried the hotel wouldn't have a room available. So we were pleased when we got a room to have a quick nap in a real bed and freshen up before our tour around Bergen. The room was more worn than dated. Very quickly we knew it needed a little TLC. The furniture had a few noticeable marks and holes. The wooden floor had permanent boot marks, looked and felt unclean. The bathroom was bland and bare, but functional. All in all, the room as okay but it needed work. That being said, it was clear that Rica knew this property needs work because in clear view of our window was a construction site. They were working on a huge expansion project for the hotel. We weren't bothered by the noise, but we were exploring most of the day. I hope that once the expansion is complete, that the older rooms are updated and equal care is given to all rooms. The breakfast is one of the main reasons we booked at Rica. Rica's breakfast was extensive and expensive. The morning we arrived, we were told we couldn't partake in the breakfast even though we were departing early the next morning. From reading other reviews, we were worried the breakfast wouldn't be ready by the time of our departure. The staff assured us the breakfast will start early, so that we could have a quick bite before heading back to Oslo. If you're taking the first morning train back to Oslo, you will have decent amount of time to enjoy breakfast at Rica. You will have time to chew your food slowly, but just lounge around like it's Sunday brunch. Breakfast included different versions of eggs, freshly squeeze orange juice (the machine is the dining room), lots of caviar and lots of caviar. Overall, Rica is a great location. It's not in the dead center of the city, but a bit off to the side and easy to reach for those taking the train in from Oslo. Rica hotel is in the midst of renovations, so be mindful of the possible noise. Make sure you don't miss the breakfast to take you through the day. Everything is so pricey in Norway, so this is your time to fuel up!
