I spent five nights at the Mercure Berlin City along with the rest of the tour group I was…read moretraveling with. ( had previously visited Munich and Nuremberg.) It was a super mixed experience. I'll start with the cons. The hotel room was quite small. It had twin beds that were awfully close together, and there was no good space to put a large suitcase. There was no real closet, either - just a small area to hang up a few items. I'm still wondering who designed the room and included a strange window into the bathroom. (There was a shade on the inside, so we were still able to have privacy). There was neither a fridge nor a microwave in the hotel room - perhaps these are not as common in Germany as they are in the United States? The fire alarm went off the first night of our stay. As the nearly 30 people in my group and all the other hotel guests descended towards the first floor in our pajamas, I wondered what the cause was. As we exited the hotel, we immediately saw - and smelled - multiple cigarette smokers right outside. I cannot be sure, but it seems likely that one of them (or another guest) set off the alarm by smoking inside the hotel. Lastly, while using the lobby men's room one day, I discovered it was out of soap. I walked to the front desk and notified the clerk, who thanked me for the heads-up. Unfortunately, there was still no soap the next day. As for the pros, I'll begin with the food. The breakfast buffet options were abundant. There were eggs, meats, cheeses, croissants and other pastries, yogurt, fruit, vegetables, cereal, at least four bread options - all super fresh - multiple jams, three kinds of honey, tea, and a coffee machine with a variety of choices including hot chocolate. There was also plenty of time to enjoy breakfast, as the breakfast hours were quite generous. More positives: the hotel is close to both public transportation and the REWE grocery store. There was a safe in the hotel room where I kept my passport. The hotel staff stored my entire group's luggage in a locked room before our official check-in time, and they kindly stored mine for several hours after I checked out. Since there was no fridge in the room, I asked if they could store my dinner leftovers in the fridge a few times so that I did not have to throw it out or let it go bad before I could finish it, and they obliged. Finally, the hotel staff was very friendly. Every day - sometimes multiple times a day - I would ask the hotel bartenders if I could trouble them for some ice. They would take my insulated water bottle and fill it up. Back home, I drink cold water all year long - you better believe that in Germany, I was in need of ice in August! If you're considering staying at Mercure Berlin City, just be sure you know what to expect!

My family and I have stayed at many hotels across various countries in the last few decades. Our…read morerecent stay at Mercure Hotel Berlin City during the Berlin Marathon was by far the most disappointing guest experience we have ever had - not just because of the accumulation of failures at the time and subsequent lack of reaction by the local hotel management team, but also because of the dismissive response from Accor's corporate team at every level afterwards. Upon checking in, the receptionist was neither particularly welcoming nor helpful, advising no room was available for us yet and we should come back from 15:00 - not the best start to our stay, provided other guests checking in at the same time were getting their rooms immediately. Only when another staff member intervened did we learn that a room had been available all along. A few days later in the breakfast area, I also experienced a frustrating interaction with the staff member in charge of room number check that day : after giving ours and proceeding to the buffet, the same employee caught up to me, insisting - wrongly - that the room number was incorrect. I had to follow him back to the reception area, where it took several minutes to clarify the situation. This was both embarrassing and unnecessary, and clearly the result of poor training and internal miscommunication. Not reflective, again, of the standards expected from a Mercure establishment. Our room on another note, while visually pleasant, also felt cramped. Finally on marathon day, we encountered a far more serious issue : a full blown sewage "waterfall" in the reception area (see pictures in attachments), accompanied by an overpowering smell. While on my way to / back from the breakfast area that morning, I noticed a terrible (sewage) smell. Half a day later in the evening, that situation had gotten out of control : we were met with a horrendous smell and a full blown sewage leak from the ceiling and live lighting fixture onto the flooded reception area, with the obvious health and safety risks posed by the combination of live power and water, while staff were discussing the food items contamination in the adjacent catering space. Again, hardly the kind of issue one would expect from a Mercure chain hotel or international standard establishment. Given the accumulation service failures, a serious sanitation incident, and clear safety risks we experienced, we requested a partial refund of our stay. Despite the extent of the inconvenience and the clear deviation from the standards expected of an international Accor brand such as Mercure, the General Manager at Mercure Hotel Berlin City insisted they would not consider our request. Furthermore after escalation to the highest level at Accor's corporate team, and to the executive level (Guest Service Executive Department, Chief Loyalty & E-Commerce Officer, and finally Chairman & CEO), we were again met with a template-style dismissal. This position obviously did not acknowledge the accumulation of failures and the accumulation of missed opportunities for corrective actions since then. So much for customer care, accountability and brand standards, Mercure Hotel Berlin City and Accor Group levels of professionalism and accountability ...

I have mixed feeling about this hotel but I think overall it was on the good side…read more I stayed here for two nights to attend a conference held here. Service is good most of the time. Whenever I needed something they responded right away. When I asked something other than it was in their "rules", sometimes they say no immediately because it is not in their rules. Simple thing like gym hours. They are not open until 6:30am and it's late for me to start. First time I asked, they said no immediately as the rule in their book said 6:30am. I pushed the issue again and one person said yes to accommodate my schedule. Room is interesting. Took me until the next day to figure out how to use AC. I didn't realize my window was open and that's why AC wasn't working on the first day. Bathroom amenities are minimal. I like a nice thick bathrobe and slippers provided in the room. Nice to have those to use after shower. It was funny to see the old style TV. Haven't seen one of those in ten years. Free TV channel is limited and only one English channel. Internet works better near the hallway, not the desk area. I moved my laptop by the door and sat on the floor to work for better internet connection. Gym was minimal but adequate for what I wanted to do. Pool and sauna looked inviting but I didn't bring bathing suit. I ate breakfast and lunch here and food was what I expected from a hotel. Overall the hotel was adequate, they served the purpose.

Sauna and pool are awesome. And after the disappointing dinner breakfast was great, lots of international breakfast favourites. Still I have to say that they closed the grill where they made fresh omelettes and fried eggs one and a half hours before the buffet closed and that is unacceptable.
