Food was meh. The peking duck was bad, so glad we didn't get a full duck. It was dry and the flavor was mid. The duck's presentation was bad. The steamed wrap was super thick and rough in texture. The rest of the dishes were fine, the portion was small to medium; that said, it wasn't unexpected considering this is supposed to be a more upscale Chinese restaurant. Overall, it was a disappointment. We will not return. The interior was nice and the staff seemed nice.

*Visited this spot a few months ago (Lunar New Year)* Our usual Lunar New Year spot was closed, but my brother found this spot at the last minute. Thankfully we were able to get a table and the food did not disappoint. Highly recommend the Peking Duck. It has a light sweet taste that's very unique. I'm still thinking about it months later. The service was alright. It was a busy holiday, so that was understandable, but it could've been more attentive. This restaurant is definitely on the elevated side. It's a good option if you're looking for somewhere quiet that accommodates large parties.

Did some research to find a great place to get some delicious Peking duck in New York City, so glad we decided to go to this place. We went for a late lunch and thought their lunch price was pretty reasonable. The cocktails which were a bit pricey ($20/cocktail) and all the food that we ordered (Peking duck, crispy beef, eggplant and pork, spicy wonton) were so delicious. The whole Peking duck was carved table side. It's so much fun to watch. The service was friendly and attentive. The waitstaff kept checking on us making sure we were okay. I highly recommend this Chinese restaurant if you're craving for some good Chinese food and will definitely come back someday!

My husband and I recently had dinner at Hwa Yuan with out-of-town friends who were staying in Chinatown. The restaurant is a bit more formal than a lot of the other spots in the neighborhood, and the price point is definitely a bit higher as a result, but it's got a clean and modern aesthetic and good food overall. Their Beijing duck is great. Perhaps one of the best ones I've tasted. I appreciate that they carve the duck (with precision) in front of you instead of taking it back into the kitchen, so you know you're getting all of the duck meat that you paid for. I also like that they clearly make their own duck wrappers in house. We also ordered the dry fry green beans, the house rack of lamb, and their famous cold sesame noodles. They apparently invented cold sesame noodles, so we were eager to taste them, but they seemed somewhat bland compared to others we've tried. The noodles had a nice consistency though. The lamb was a bit gamey but still pretty tasty if you like lamb. The green beans were well executed and had a nice crunch. The service was very attentive and efficient. Overall, I would definitely return to try other dishes and to order the duck again.

Ambiance: nice big restaurant in Chinatown. There is 3 levels, top two are dining and the bottom is where the restaurants are located. Service: wonderful service. Very attentive and funny as well! Food: we came for the highly recommended cold sesame noodles and the Peking duck. Our stomachs were so happy. They even gave us some green beans since we didn't order any vegetables. Love that!! This place has had some celebrities that had dined there. Truly a gem in NYC

I would put 4.5 stars if I could. excellent - one of the best Barramundi (fish) with black bean chili sauce; DongBoRo (braised pork shoulder) Pretty ok - Peking duck wasn't as crispy as before but still tasty and exotic nice occasion eat the 1/2 reduction - recommending us for a vegetable dish that was in season. True, tender. But color wise it's not freshly kept. Did not bother to take a picture! Excellent service - attentive Con: still have that cheap bathroom shelf for a fine dining which is appalling mismatch. I had to remove their dead flowers in the bathroom to rearrange it cause I couldn't bear seeing dead pedals drooping when surrounded by fresh flowers

As one of the very few upscale dining experiences in Chinatown, Hwa Yuan stands out - drawing in non-locals, while confusing our elderly locals in the area due to its fine dining set up. It also boasts a large bilevel interior. The food was good, but definitely pricey for Chinatown when it offers common dishes like soup dumplings, eggplants, and ma po tofu. Overall, service was great and attentive. I liked that they provided each diner with 2 chopsticks, one for serving/communal eating and one for plate-to-mouth.

I was here recently for a family outing. They have been here a very long time and apparently I came here as a child but unfortunately I don't recall it. They have also gone thru some renovations over the years so that might be why it wasn't familiar. They have two levels and we ended up upstairs. There were stairs and an elevator as well. Service was good and the food was delicious. The menu didn't have an overload of options as well which is a good sign. They are Michelin rated as well. Hopefully I'll be back soon

Age and I celebrated Thanksgiving at Hwa Yuan Szechuan. It was her first time here. I have been coming here for several years and always have their Beijing Duck. This lunch was the first time I didn't have it. Hwa Yuan is Tommy Tang's white table cloth elegant restaurant where the cuisine is excellent. Adrienne chose Sliced Chicken with Chinese Broccoli and Sautéed Brussels Sprouts with Chili Pepper. Adrienne loves this vegetable although she didn't realize that it would be this spicy. The dish glistened with red chilies! I enjoyed Steamed Shrimp Dumplings and Vegetarian Spring Rolls and String Beans with Pork. We sat upstairs to eat. An elevator took me upstairs where the dining room is large and many customers were eating. Service was fine.

They do not have the steak and bine marrow anymore but its still on the menu and same price. They also burnt my steak but we were too hungry to return it. The duck was crispy and good and the chilean sea bass was the best.

Pro-tips: I heard the pricing for lunch is a lot more reasonable, so don't make my mistake and come for dinner. Highlights: It's a huge restaurant so there's lots of seating and the service is really good and attentive. I thought the duck was done very well and I've never seen Beijing duck served with pear slices so that was a fun add. I liked the pork soup dumplings too. Lowlights: At this price point, I was expecting more. I thought most of the items were average at best. In flavor, portion, quality, or presentation, nothing stood out about the majority of the meal.

While Hwa Yuan is not the typical Chinatown restaurant, it certainly is a Chinatown staple. Serving Chinese-American cuisine, it has marked itself by providing a slightly elevated experience. Overall good spot if you're in the area.

Honestly, it is super expensive for Chinese food but the service was good and there are plenty of tables and reservations. 1. Ginger and Scallion Lobster (8/10): Very expensive, kinda oily but solid 2. Beijing Duck (10/10): Probably the only thing I'd go back for, it was delicious and crispy and had great flavor 3. Steamed Whole Fish with Ginger and Scallion (8/10): Solid, fish was very fresh and it was a pretty big portion 4. String Beans (8/10): Solid and probably the best vegetable you can get at a Chinese restaurant 5. Beef Rice Noodles (7/10): Beef was tough but the rice noodles and flavors were really good but a bit greasy and the portion wasn't that big Overall, it's a great place to host a dinner but for the price point it would definitely have to be a fancy meal.

Got off the E train and when we looked for Chinese food, this place popped up with good reviews and it was just a short walk from where we got off the train. My buddies ordered the special lunches and we also got two types of xlb's, beef chow fun, and some fried dumplings. The special lunches come with a little fried rice, cold garlic flavored noodle, choice of egg drop or hot and sour soup, and main side. My buddies all enjoyed their meals. The beef chow fun was also really good and beef was nice and tender. The xiao long baos were excellent and is comparable to any place in California like DTF. Nice and juicy and great with some ginger, soy sauce, and spicy chili. Friendly service and food comes out pretty quickly. Credit card is accepted. "How 'bout there?" he responded pointing to Excellent Dumpling House. It was directly across the street. I pulled up Yelp, saw good reviews and readily agreed. At 3:30, the restaurant was empty. There were a few takeout orders, but we were the only people sitting down for late lunch. And y'know ... it was pretty good. Wonton soup is what I'd expect in Chinatown. Wonton wrappers were thin -- my preference -- the stuffing delicious and the broth flavorful. They were generous with the beef in our chow fun. Good, but the noodles needed a jolt. So I asked for soy sauce which was sort of a solution. Shrimp with vegetables was great. A lot of shrimp, too. There are lunchtime specials on weekdays, reasonable prices, and nice people work there. Next time it makes sense to try dumplings since it is, after all a dumpling house.

Located within the historic Chelsea Market building--a former Nabisco factory where Oreo cookies were first produced--the restaurant feels theatrical in the best possible way. The soaring ceilings, dramatic lighting, and energetic atmosphere create a sense of occasion from the moment you walk in. It feels less like simply going out to dinner and more like stepping into a beautifully staged production. I started with a Botanist Gin Martini with a twist, which paired wonderfully with the meal. The surprise star of the evening was the new Cucumber Tiger Salad. The balance of flavors was exceptional: bright acidity, a pleasant touch of heat, and just enough mint to make each bite feel fresh and exciting. Every so often the mint would come through and suddenly all the flavors would click together in a way that made me immediately want another bite. This is a dish I would happily order again. Next came the Edamame Dumplings. They were delicate and comforting, especially when enjoyed with the accompanying broth. The broth adds depth and richness that elevates the entire dish. My only suggestion would be the slightest touch more salt, perhaps even a finishing sprinkle of black volcanic salt for both flavor and presentation. I also found myself wishing there were a bit more of that delicious broth because it contributes so much to the overall experience. For my entrée, I ordered the Glazed Alaskan Black Cod, and it absolutely lived up to its reputation. The fish was rich, buttery, and perfectly prepared. What impressed me most was how thoughtfully the accompaniments were composed. The pickled cucumbers brought brightness, acidity, and crunch, while the black bean and eggplant relish delivered deep savory notes and unexpected complexity. I'm generally not an eggplant fan, but this relish was outstanding. The cucumbers and relish sit at opposite ends of the flavor spectrum, yet both somehow make the cod even better. Looking back, I think a glass of Sauvignon Blanc alongside the cod would have been the perfect pairing. I finished with the Miso Caramel Milk Bar, which was spectacular. Decadent, sweet, salty, and touched with just enough umami to keep every bite interesting. The chocolate crumble underneath added a wonderful crunch that contrasted beautifully with the creamy ice cream and luscious caramel sauce. Every component worked together perfectly, creating a dessert that was both indulgent and sophisticated. From start to finish, the meal felt polished, thoughtful, and memorable. Thank you!
