The food is fresh, and the place has quite a variety. Unfortunately they keep moving the health market out into the store randomly. It makes it hard sometimes, and I prefer to get my 10% off on Wednesday consistently. Other than that their selections in the meat, seafood,produce, cheese, and bakery are pretty good. The store is pretty well kept up minus the bathrooms. Ever since they combined the 2 genders, they are pretty guy-like kept. Yuck. Checkouts are usually easy to get through so you should have a nice experience. Everyone is usually nice and helpful. read more

Today, I was told how the program actually works (ad prices only, not everyday prices), which is fine moving forward; however, for customer service purposes, they should have honored (what every other cashier I have checked out with [and some managers]) had allowed for 10 weeks and simply told me, after today, they will only match ad prices. Instead, they left $28.50 on the table, made more work for themselves having to restock my items and left me having to complete my shopping elsewhere. For me, moving forward, I will shop elsewhere- why shop anywhere else- to answer the question on their front door- because Hy-Vee is more expensive and the (incorrect) price match method was the reason I (used to) shop there. read more

I would like to amend my former 5 star review of HyVee of Sycamore. Why? Quite honestly, the store has really started to go down hill. Produce section: it is often under stocked, constantly out of produce bags, hard to find employees. Also, today, there was produce on the floor. I was shopping the produce section for 10 minutes + and no employees came by. Dairy: also often under stocked. Usually have to go find an employee to check for a product. General sales floor: Do you want good customer service? Don't bother asking the surly employees who are busy socializing; they are busy giving dirty looks to customers. Cash lines: They took out several lines in favor of self checkout. Half the self checkouts are always closed. They now only have 1 or 2 cash lanes open with huge lines. The cashiers are also amazingly careless with your purchases. Management/front desk staff: Don't bother talking to them either; they won't do anything to solve issues. Half the time they're as useless and unfriendly and unhelpful as the staff. I feel bad for the few employees who actually do try to care and do their jobs. You used to be so good Hy-Vee; what happened? When did you transform from a goo store into a crappy social club? read more

When I was little I used to ride my bike to the Hy-Vee in Des Moines for candy and basketball cards; it was like Disneyland to me! I visited the store in Sycamore a few times when I was a student at Northern and it didn't seem as impressive. Hy-Vee is one of the best grocery stores in the DeKalb/Sycamore area. This store offers a wide variety of food options - including a great gluten-free/vegan/health-food section. Though it can be pricey at times, there is usually a deal you can find on their products. I have to say, their take-home meals are incredible! As a college student, sometimes I don't have enough time to cook a good meal, but these meals are easy to prepare (cook in the oven). I have never had a bad experience with customer service, and I've been here a lot! Overall, great place to get groceries! read more

Loved this place when it opened. Recently, not so much. The prices have gone way up, the quality has gone way down. The produce department is terrible, and the store should be embarrassed by it. There is more spoiled or about it be spoiled produce than should be allowed. The bagged salad is always dated for the day of or tomorrow. Mostly low quality product in general. One day, for "fun" I followed my wife with another cart and only put in out of date items. I had over 50 items from all over the store in the cart after one trip through the store. Some were seriously out of date. This was just a non serious, random survey of dates. Unacceptable. When Meier opens and Aldi moves to the new bigger location, Hy Vee will be in serious trouble. Hy-Vee was our "go to" grocery store when we lived in Iowa. Pleased a few years ago to see it was in Sycamore. I visit the Sycamore/DeKalb area on rare occasions and shop at Hy-Vee only for special items, not for an entire week's of groceries. Needed some quick dessert/bakery items. Very disappointed with both the selection and quality of the bakery items. Nothing began to compare with the in-store bakeries I find in West Coast grocery stores. Next time I will stick with a smaller, stand-alone bakery. read more

Hyvee is where I go in between my major grocery shopping. I have to say their health food section is pretty nice. A couple complaints here though. Several times when I was shopping I ran into their nutritionist who does most of the ordering for the health food section. I asked her about a couple items I would like to see stocked. She jotted these items down in a notebook. Now, I understand that if they Stocked everything that everybody wanted, it wouldn't be cost effective because everyone's tastes are so varied. But I did ask a couple times when I saw her about having an item ordered specifically that I would pick up at the store. To which again she wrote down on a notepad. I never heard from her, or anyone at Hyvee about these items. So that has been kind of a turn off. I love the bulk spice section. The containers have a tube that you shake the spice into. The tube has measurements from 1 teaspoon to a half of a cup I believe. It's great to use for that spice that you'll most likely never use again. I give the Pharmacist there Deb Svoboda two thumbs up! She is really knowledgeable about nutritional matters and fixed a couple errors on my prescriptions, saving me money read more

The grocery store is ok but the grand buffet is a rip off. Only the chinese food section is offered and they are stingy with serving portions. $16.99 for subpar chinese food. I finally went in here for the first time. I was expecting a regular grocery store. Hyvee had a large eat-in area, bakery, large health/organic section, etc. It was very well lit and items were stocked well and presentation was good. I only picked up a couple of items. Most things were priced quite high compared to other grocery stores in the area. $4.99 a pound for some specialty grapes was a bit much. I let my kids pick special treats. One chose a slice of turtle cheesecake and the other chose a cookies and cream parfait cup. They were both terrible. The turtle cheesecake tasted like a whipped topping mixed with a tiny bit of cream cheese with chocolate syrup (like Hershey's chocolate milk syrup) drizzled on top. The parfait was equally bad. I can't comment on the hot food or salad bar, but they looked okay. There was a pizza deal. $5 for two slices of pizza and a drink. That's pretty good if you are looking for a lunch bargain. read more

One of my favorite places in town to grab a quick lunch. You could get a couple slices of pizza, Chinese food, hot traditional American meals etc... lunch time is always busy. My favorite things to get are either sushi or fresh made sandwiches if I need to run in and run out during lunch. Everything is reasonable and tastes great. Grocery shopping is awesome here, some things you pay a little more than Jewel but there is a bigger selection. If you're into craft beer their liquor department is one of the best in town. Huge selection to choose from. Liquor wise, a lot of options at fair prices. The wine section is huge and I've been able to find hard to get wines like Justin Isosceles there. Compared to the crappy Jewel Osco....this grocery store is an oasis in the middle of the desert. An actual organic produce section that is bigger than a postage stamp...and a health food section with bin products. I came here today while visiting with my DeKalb daughter and even though she is a stone's throw from Jewel Osco, she plans on making the Hy-Vee her preferred grocery store. While she still prefers Duck Soup Co-op, they don't usually have very good produce, so she can get her produce at the Hy-Vee, as well as just about anything else she might need. Oh, Hy-Vee. I have such a love-hate relationship with you. You see, along with everyone else, I was sucked into your shiny, expansive, exciting newness during your opening week. I strolled through your ginormous refrigerated section, oohed and aahhhed over your countless exotic spices, squealed over the impressive cooking demo room, and marveled over your exotic produce. Visiting Hy-Vee was like a miniature field trip; good enough that it was worth dragging other people along. But the honeymoon period quickly ended after I realized how freaking expensive you are! Sure, like many stores, there are sale items and loss leaders, but the overall costs are astronomical. I particularly noticed this when I visited Hy-Vee in the middle of the summer, where seedless watermelons were $6.99. On the same day at Jewel? $2.99. Dang! That's a major difference! I also have tried out the store for their breakfast buffet, which is marginal at best and costs the same amount as the actually delicious Egg Haven and Eggsclusive breakfast places. It is nice that Hy-Vee has employed a lot of locals--there are always a crazy number of people working there. However, just because they have a lot of people working doesn't necessarily mean they know what they are doing. I have purchased items from Hy-Vee about 5 times now, and two of those times involved people either not having any idea what I wanted or where to find it (polenta) and not knowing how to ring it up (fennel), even after I told them what it was. Being that the store is so extensive, I rely on the help of employees to assist me, and they have not been good at doing so thus far in my experience. I also have a problem with the fact that Hy-Vee has come in as the massive corporate takeover--whether or not they are employee owned. For example, in their negotiating process, they told Sycamore that they would not move in unless the town promised them that they'd be the only place around who was allowed to offer wine tastings. The result? Choice Wine and Spirits, a fantastic local place that regularly offered free wine tastings, has gone out of business, leaving us with $10 Hy-Vee wine tastings as our only local option. All-in-all, Hy-Vee is an excellent place for specialty items that could not be found anywhere else. They have extensive selections of many items, including produce, cheese, bakery items, gluten-free products, and much more. However, anyone who is using Hy-Vee as a one-stop-shop is probably wasting a LOT of money on everyday items they could get much cheaper elsewhere. As a result, you only get mid-range points from me, Hy-Vee--but thanks for potentially attracting other business! read more

I disagree about the meat selection criticism. Talk to the butcher. Ask if they will get what you want. I like Jenny-O turkey ham & they now stock it because I asked. And if you want to cut down on meat prices, ask about their bundles. I got 5# of 85% ground chuck; 10, 8 oz ground chuck hamburger patties; 5, 8 oz rib eyes; 5, 8 oz strip steaks; 5, 8 oz filet mignons. I may have missed something but it came out to $6/pound. They also have bundles that include chicken & pork. The employees are always helpful & they deliver groceries for free if you buy $100 or more, which means no winter driving! They take it right to my kitchen. The Chinese food is as good as any I have had in our area. The store is clean & the people friendly. They have a good organic selection, too. The higher prices everyone talks about is worth it to me to come home in a good mood. I hated going to WalMart (sub par fruits & veggies); I dreaded going to Jewel (awful parking, outdated store). With few exceptions, the HyVee brand is as good as name brand items. PLUS you get to save money on gas, based on what you buy. 10 cents here, 3 cents there, it adds up. I've gotten more than $1.25 off per gallon. If you fill your tank, that's a big saving right there. On Wednesdays they have a "sack sale". Items in the pharmacy area are 10% off. A good day to stock up on supplements & vitamins. They also deliver prescriptions free. On Mondays, 10% off for seniors, 60 & up. read more

It almost takes up the majority of the entire department as it seemed like the guy running it or their beer buyer is a beer geek at heart, especially when you see the sought-over empty bottles of such beers as KBS, BCS, and various New Glarus brews. We went there for a rib thing about a year ago and didn't get any of those either. It isn't like we show up late we were there at 5:30. I was excited for Hy-Vee to land in Sycamore to be able to find a decent place for produce year-round. Summers are not an issue because of the local farmer's markets, but then things dry up. All-around, it's a nice store. A little too big for how few options there really are here. While there are a huge number of options, there are often large areas populated with Hy-Vee brand goods which so far in my experience are not great. Produce is pretty amazing, though the cost is what you would expect for having to ship in a huge selection from all over the world. It's often pricey. Sometimes due to quality, sometimes due to buying foods that are not in-season anywhere near here right now. In general, Hy-Vee is more expensive than most other options in the area. They are comparable to Jewel, but I can easily get the same goods for a few dollars less at Jewel most of the time. And if I expand to other stores, I can save a dramatic amount. And I'm not just referring to Wal-Mart or Aldi. Duck Soup Co-op is generally less expensive on items that Hy-Vee has cordoned off in their organic/dietary/naturals boutique area. Local liquor stores are cheaper on liquor. Jewel is cheaper on dairy. I wanted to like Hy-Vee more, and I will definitely stop by for select items in the future, but it's at an odd juxtaposition of a little more expensive, without a real difference in quality (excepting produce selection). read more

Like another Yelper, I have a love-hate relationship with this store. I loved having an actual grocery store that was relatively close, other than Jewel (which got to be expensive). I also loved their wide selection of produce and cheese. But, after awhile the novelty has worn off. It started last year when they would always have a cashier-type person standing inside of the entry basically waving "sales papers" in your face as soon you stepped one toe inside the store. I felt like it was invading my personal space (and according to the customer service desk, others felt the same way), so they stopped doing that so much, which was fine. I like to get my bearings before I start shopping - get my list, my pen, etc. and not have to be bombarded if I want something right away. Then the over-the-top happiness of some of the employees. I know, I know... you don't want to walk into a grocery store where everyone's crabby but it's okay to tone it down a little bit. Sometimes I feel like it's kind of forced. I almost feel bad if I don't return the same sentiment when they approach me. Even if you're looking away, looking at something else they'll still go out of their way to say "Hi" which is a little awkward. Then they stopped selling one of my favorite coffee creamers of all time. I know the product itself is not discontinued (I can get it at Walmart or Jewel - but I would like not to), but they adamantly claimed it was and they will no longer carry the flavor I've been buying for months. I was told they could "try" to special order it for me - I gave my name and number to a manager, and months later I have heard nothing, or seen any sign of it happening. A good grocery store, I believe...goes that extra mile to get something for a customer if it's reasonable. I frequented a store in North Carolina where they special ordered items all the time for folks. I should not have to drive to another store for something I need. Ok, you could say "well just don't get it", but you want what you want, right? Also, be prepared to bring your own bags and re-bag your groceries when you take them to the car, or right there at the register. If you give them reusable bags, they will try their best to cram everything and anything into those few bags to where they're too heavy to lift! They do not ask you if you want your milk in a bag - and once, a cashier asked me if she could bag "raw chicken with chemicals". NO, you may not. Today, for example...I had orange juice, milk and a six-pack of tea in glass bottles crammed in to one of my bags. Real nice. I could barely lift it. Depending on what's on my list, I feel like I almost have to go to Hy-Vee, so I don't have to make two trips. More and more, I hear myself saying "I should've gone to Target" (they do have groceries!). Target is actually a bit cheaper when you buy the same things. read more

BEST GROCERY STORE EVER Easily, the best grocery store I've ever been to. Employees: Nicest ever. They must be all trained to ask how you're doing and "can I help you find anything", because I get that all the time there. Most grocery store employees ignore you at places like Woodman's and Walmart and Jewel. Restaurant area: Best salad bar in town for sure. Close second to Whole Foods. Great sandwiches too. And Thursday and Friday outside grill makes a good grilled chicken sandwich. Produce: Hands down, the best, freshest, most beautifully organized produce section anywhere. Rewards: You get money off your gasoline purchases with certain grocery purchases. These accumulate and have been 30 cents off per gallon for me before. Cleanliness: Super, super clean. Bright store. Weird, but it just gives off a happy feeling. Wine: Excellent wine selection Negatives: A little pricier than Woodman's and Jewel and Walmart. No self-checkout. As a grocery store, I am pretty impressed by what it has to offer. The prices on the food itself are pretty fair. The bakery section has so much to offer and in the evening some of the fresh baked goods are half off. They have a hot food section as well. I do not mean the usual rotisserie chicken. They have a Chinese food and Pizza counter. I am so impressed by what $5 gets you at the Chinese counter. Two entrees, a large amount of rice and an egg roll. More than enough food for two meals. If you are looking for a great liquor section, check out this place. You get a discount for buying 6 bottles of wine. You can get wine as low as $3 a bottle, and it is not terrible wine. This place is not perfect, but I am still happy with it. read more
