On a whim I walked in to ask if Hyland Shoe Repair would fix my favorite leather bag since the straps were starting to give way at the seams. This bag is about 4 years old and used every single day to store a laptop, books, paperwork, etc. I was pleasantly surprised that it was fixable, it would be very reasonable to fix it and it would be done in a day or two. I asked him if he could repair an open seam on the front of $600 boot. He said yes, did not tell me that he would totally alter the boot - not for the better, it was very obviously ugly and the glue was hard and made it unwearable for my foot. He did not refund me and walked away saying "Next time go somewhere esle." Next time I will, Des Moines is not that far away (I live in Ames). I lost an expensive boot and got an insult. The owner is efficient, honest and very capable. He always returns my shoes in better shape than I turned them in because in addition to making the repair, he usually polishes them and makes them look nice. THe cash up front is very smart because that way he never does work that he isn't paid for; as a former business prof I would advise that approach. I think shoe repair is a valuable service that helps us prolong the use of shoes and keep them in our closets and out of the land fill. I was shocked by my visit here today. I've taken a couple things there in the past and had good service. Today I was going to drop off part of a stool - essentially a square wood frame with a leather-covered pad on top. On Facebook they say they can repair "so many items," but apparently some are too lowly to warrant their attention. The guy in the shop was dismissive, and when I said I'd come in because of what their website says about repairing a variety of things, he made it clear he couldn't be bothered with "upholstery." read more
