We weren't feeling 100% the day we stayed here, so we stayed in at night and streamed the sopranos, but it sounded like more fun outside. It was clean, comfortable, not terribly expensive and located in a great neighborhood.

The location is phenomenal - right in the heart of Vieux Lille, steps from the Rihour Metro station, and from tons of shops and restaurants. The rooms were spacious, clean and nicely decorated. Unlike previous reviewers, my bathroom had certainly been updated. It was also spacious with a full bath and hand-shower, a rarity by European standards. There was a flat-screen TV in my room, with 2 English channels, including BBC News. The room itself is decorated in a Henry XVI style (obviously not real antique furniture), fitting with the classic style of the hotel. The only disappointments were: 1) Very thin walls - when neighbours watched TV or spoke on phone, I could hear everything. 2) The wireless internet was VERY slow and spotty, dropping out randomly, making Skype calls difficult. Internet access was free, so I suppose I shouldn't complain! If these two issues weren't present, I would certainly have given this hotel 5 stars.

The Mercure Lille is a great place to make your base for exploring Lille and the surrounding northern France towns. It is incredibly convenient to rail stations and an easy walking location for all kinds of exploring in and around Lille. The staff are also extremely helpful and kind. I had a computer stolen out of my bag on the train from Brussels and the stay helped me to walk through the process of filing a police report. Definitely worth a stay if you're a business traveler - as the lobby is a hub for virtual nomads and meetings.

I only wish it was better weather when I was there to be able to enjoy it more. The hotel itself was clean and the bed was fine. Don't expect anything too fancy but everything was fine for my liking. The people working there were extremely nice and accommodating. Even though the hotel is close to bars and train traffic, I had no issue with noise at night. I would stay here again if I go back to Lille.

The location was perfect for our early morning train from Lille Flandres (we could see the station entrance from our window) and the location is also ideal for access to pubs and restaurants. Room was clean and comfortable, as were the toilet and shower. We didn't have much contact with staff but when we did, they were courteous and helpful. Breakfast is expensive, but there are an abundance of places nearby where you can get a nice sitdown breakfast on the main square. Recommended.

Unfortunately after having a totally rubbish sleep here, I was left utterly exhausted and only had my night out saved by copious amounts of energy drinks! As previously mentioned, the rooms are clean and the staff are friendly (hence the two stars) - but paper thin would be too good a description for the walls. I could hear the couple in the room next to me screaming (yep, screaming) at each other for ages, and it was getting pretty scary so I went down and told reception. They did check it out but it solved absolutely nothing, and to be honest I just didn't really feel all that safe staying there, so it was pretty miserable! Definitely learned my lesson there, it's always worth paying a bit more for a good hotel room!! p.s. Lille is amazing, especially around Christmas. Breakfast area had a continental for about 12 euro and full for about 23. I recommend full with cheese, salmon, eggs, bacon, ham, sausage, beans, waffles, pancakes and lots of bread, cakes, muffins and selfserve fresh squeezed orange juice. You also get fruit and champagne included. 5 star breakfast. You must visit the chapel and library and museum of old hospice and banquet rooms. Stained glass windows and plenty of artwork. After several hours of back and forth, including putting a dispute on my credit card, I finally got the extra money refunded. So beware if you use a third party booking system! Despite this annoying and time wasting hiccup, this was a great little hotel! The location is incredible, it is right next to the main train station. We had a very early 6:00 am train and wanted to stay somewhere convenient so we wouldn't have to wake up at an even more ungodly hour to rush to the station with our bags. The location is a blessing yet also a curse, as while you are close to the train station, that means your view will most likely be of a busy (and noisy) road and there aren't a lot of dining options nearby or even within walking distance. The room had thick, double paned windows that did a surprisingly good job of muting the road noise, but we get hot in Europe (especially during the winter months when they blast the heat) and like to sleep with our windows open to cool things down. We were cool, but it was loud outside -- so it's a catch 22 when it comes to sleep quality. We arrived in the late evening and got a bit twisted around from the Eurostar station but finally found the hotel. It was buzzing in the packed lobby, which apparently has a very popular bar because it was busy with locals. It almost looked like a nightclub instead of a hotel! Check-in was swift and as pleasant as you'd expect at a French hotel. Our room was large and spacious, with a weird layout -- the bathroom toilet was separate from the shower, like in far opposite corners of the room. I've never seen that before. The room was well equipped with a mini refrigerator, a microwave, a tea kettle and a Nespresso machine! These were very nice amenities, especially for a non-luxury hotel. Toiletries in the form of a multi-use body wash and shampoo in the shower were provided as were the standard teeny tiny European hotel towels. The bed was pretty comfy and soft-ish, a true compliment for a hotel bed in Europe. There was a curtain dividing the room if you needed some privacy (it reminded me of my old dorm room, lol). Free wi-fi, but an extra charge if you plan to take breakfast. We just grabbed a croissant at the train station while we waited for our (delayed) SNCF train.
