It started as a noncredit workshop for printmaking and over the years has grown to include painting, fashion, design and photography (my field). Classes in the summer usually run a month and there are options for language classes as well. Most of the students are Americans but the staff is mostly Italians and are top notch. The people who run the place are excellent and a great resource to help you make the most of your time in Florence. My university sub-contracts space from SRISA and its an excellent facility as well as having an on site gallery. It is free to enter, with nicely displayed work that is a cross between jewelry and sculpture. His work would suggest ceremonial objects (some contain crystals or gems, female forms, and the occasional unicorn) or props for a Jules Verne movie. La Scuola di Cucina Lorenzo Medici has to be one of the top flight schools of Italian cooking…read more Everything about it is so totally impressive form its huge open modern design to its formally attired chef and master chef instructors attired in their dress whites with 52 pleated chef hats. Unfortunately I didn't have the opportunity to attend any of the classes, though I wish I would have. However, I did carefully observe just about everything of their operations and the instructors left no detail to chance or uncovered. For example I noticed one student incorrectly cracking an egg against a knife edge and immediately saw two chef instructors showing him and instructing him on how to properly do it against a flat surface and they didn't leave him until he got it right. Also the instructors are constantly observing, tasting, having the students taste and advising throughout the entire process of students cooking. The instructions and classes are done in a totally "hands on" process of instruction. Furthermore you'll find that most of the students aren't comprised of armatures or wannabe cooks, but those who are already professionals and are there to improve and further hone their culinary talents. I've fortunately had the opportunity to observe many schools of cooking and culinary instruction including those of the Culinary Institute of America and have to say that those of the La Scuola di Cucina Lorenzo Medici were amongst the most impressive.

A beautiful location on the banks of the Arno River. This international institute for fashion…read moredesign and marketing is owned by the Ferragamo family. It sits right next to the American embassy and has lovely architecture. A woman I met suggested I take a peek since I was interested in learning about fashion here in Firenze. There are two buildings in the Villa. The one with the information and administrative offices has gorgeous murals and decorative walls; even a hall of mirrors! Incredible tiny green park and a terrace space for the students to relax in. This is certainly an inspiring place to be exposed to fashion design. An international student body makes for varied perspective on designing fashion. Got some information to share with others back home. Nice to have seen the interior with the ornate classrooms and beautiful setting.
