The rink proper looks pretty standard, with protective boards and Plexiglass most of the way around. There is a small set of bleachers for outer seating and during derby bouts, folding chairs serve as additional seating. Arrive early, because seating was nearly all taken when I showed up just after the National Anthem. And speaking of showing up early, same advice goes for parking. Rivertown's lot is very small but there is additional parking on the street in front of the center. My main gripe with this venue is its poor condition. The ceiling is literally falling apart and leaking water on the floor. I was "dripped" on from above in a few different spots, ew. The interior doesn't appear to be maintained well and even though it imparts a "gritty" feel, it is not befitting any sport, specifically one like roller derby that thrives from the paid admission of its fans. I have attended roller derby bouts in different cities and NEVER encountered such a cruddy venue. OK, maybe I will give it an additional 1/2 star for the bizarre banked dirt track R/C racing going on in a "secret" back room in the north end of the building.

I called a day ahead of time and reserved a softball batting lane for one hour. Upon arrival I…read morechecked in at the front desk. Because this was my first time here, I asked the young lady where the batting cages are. She led me to the corner and I realized the cage was not set up (netting was not extended and machines were lined against the wall). While she was helpful in pulling the netting out for us, she quickly told me she doesn't know how to set up the pitching machines. (I don't either). Seeing that she wasn't going to even bother trying to figure it out for me, I started crawling around on the floor trying to figure it out. I found that it was not plugged in. I asked where the outlets are and she shrugged saying "probably behind those wrestling mats". These were HUGE wrestling mats stacked well over my head. We stared at each other for a bit: Me in disbelief that this employee couldn't help me in setting up my reserved lane and she just didn't see the issue. Finally, I took the initiative to take an extension cord from a neighboring baseball lane and pulled it over to my lane to hook it up. Lastly, I had to pull the pitching machine by myself, from the wall, to the lane (they are VERY heavy). This process of setting up my own lane took approximately 15-20 minutes. I also asked for a tee and she told me they're all broken. The kicker: 10 minutes before my reservation time would end, the same employee came over to let me know that the next reservation was here and that we needed to wrap it up. I laughed and said: "we barely had the opportunity to start since I had to set up my own lane and now you're kicking us out early??" At the end of the day I did the right thing and didn't argue with a 16 year old. But I thought management should know 1. Reservations for lanes should be set up and ready to go for the customer when they arrive at their start time. 2. Having customers move those machines is a liability waiting to happen. 3. Employees should know how to use/set up the equipment. 4. Reservation times should be honored/refunded especially if 20 minutes of the customer's time was spent doing the employee's job.

I've done at least a dozen leagues with GRSSC, and I'm really glad I found them! They offer nearly…read moreeverything you can think of... from your standard games like volleyball or basketball to your less common activities like euchre and backyard games. You can come with a full team of your friends or sign up as a free agent and make some new ones! I think the best part of GRSSC is the competitive level. Some of the sports like flag football, broomball, and dodgeball can be a bit more intense than the others, but overall they are a great balance between justforfun/casual and compeitive/challenging (especially if you're a volleyball lover). The website is well organized, but the leagues themselves are really not. You'll do all of your own scorekeeping during the games, play referee, ball fetch, and even have to log your own scores into their website afterwards. The music in the background may or may not be up and running depending on the day, and the partner bars have no notable discounts. I think they're a teensy bit high priced.. if you're providing them with a whole team full worth of players you should get a bit of a discount. Overall I'd say that it's worth it... you'll have a blast, meet some great people, and stay active playing sports and activities you love.

I showed up on my first night of dodgeball, hesitant at how adult dodgeball would work, if there was going to be nothing but weirdos there, and if I'd get hit in the face with balls and break my nose, which would not be cool for my professional job. Good news - everything worked out just fine. A dodgeball game lasts about an hour and you play against different teams for the duration of the season. Dodgeball is played with nerf style balls, not old school rubber balls so that limits the chance of injury if you get hit in the face. My three friends ad I were placed on a team with totally normal, not weirdo people and I met tons of other young professionals during that first season. Since then, I've played on flag football teams, kickball teams and I think I subbed for a bowling league once. They rotate through different sports during the year so each session brings a new chance to meet people and try a different sport. GRSSC is heavy on the social aspect of things, so don't expect this to be filled with competitive, aggressive types- it's set up to be fun for everyone. There is an after bar for each sport/season that offers drink specials. Most people go to the bar afterwards and that's where you meet each other. That's where the good stories take place ;) Now, years later, people I've met through GRSSC have gotten married (to other people they met in GRSSC!) had kids (with GRSSC people), we've taken road trips and had birthday parties for each other, and the majority of us have stayed in touch through other events. I defiantly recommend joining if you are new to the area and want to get out or just looking to meet new friends.
