With one of the most fascinating names in the Binondo Chinatown (and that's saying something, considering that the place is teeming with shops that have either extremely difficult to pronounce Chinese names or very colorful names with multiple vivid English adjectives in them that would seem funny to an English speaker), the Iambic Trading was a shop I simply had to drop by, even if for the name alone. Being an avid student of literature, I am quite fascinated in that they chose this particular work to describe their shop; the "iambic" word, as in "iambic pentameter", is often used to describe the sonnets and poems of greats such as William Shakespeare, whose verses are supposed to capture the perfect feeling of a heartbeat in terms of rhythmic length and syllable use, one of the fading disciplines in poetry today. Regardless, this shop is actually a jewelry store; Binondo has long been known for cheaply-made yet high quality jewelry, and shops like these where one can buy rings have been a favorite of couples who want to get married and cannot afford more luxurious wedding rings. Perhaps that is why the owner chose the word "iambic"; perhaps it meant the rhythmic heartbeat of a couple who wants to buy wedding rings, two hearts perfectly in sync with each other. But the truth is, I'll never know; the saleslady didn't seem to know why it was called Iambic Trading when I asked. However, the name aside, this is one small shop a bargain-hunting jewel and gold enthusiast would not want to overlook. read more
