First meal after landing at LAX... A few weeks ago, I saw my Los Angeles friends dining together at this Japanese restaurant, Iccho, in Torrance. I told Craig that it looked like a good place to eat, especially since it stays open late. So, the next time I arrived in LA, Craig suggested that we meet here since he had the next day off from work! Wow... he remembered that I wanted to go here! Iccho is a quaint restaurant because of the decor and handmade signs that show the specials. Outside, the parking is free and inside, the atmosphere was calm and quiet because it was almost closing time. Even though the menu is extensive, I almost got the Hamburg Dinner Set until I saw the Special Udon Menu. I like chewy noodles and the Curry Udon did not disappoint! The curry wasn't too spicy and the noodles were warm and filling! I had a happy tummy! Next time, I'll get the Hamburg Set because it looks like a good deal. Can't wait to return! read more

There aren't a lot of old school Japanese restaurants that serve the variety of food that they do from teriyaki entrees to udon to oyako-don to sushi to yakitori so it's a nice way to enjoy some good food from a time gone by. Torrance Food Crawl #329 Iccho has a wide variety of foods and a good selection of alcoholic drinks, much like many Izakayas. It's noteworthy that they're open until 2am most nights (1am on Sunday nights). I was here for lunch and had the day's bento option, with Grilled Red Snapper and Chicken BBQ. As with bento lunches there were several different items to the meal. The fish was average, with some (good) fish taste but not anywhere near as strong as fresh snapper I've had. The BBQ chicken was decent, well cooked, with light barbecue sauce. The half-dozen pickled vegetables were good. The pasta, tofu, green salad, miso soup, and white rice were average. Filling and a good value. I also tried a Tuna Roll. The tuna was very fresh. The seaweed wrap around the rice and tuna was a little on the tough side. Overall, I'm partial to thinking of the food here as good but average. But being open so late each night is a really nice feature, increasing my rating of the place. read more

I LOVE ICCHO. My bf introduced this place to me a couple years ago and it will always have a special place in my heart. I've never tried their fish/sushi but my favorites are always croquette (I get like 2 per visit), tsukune (grilled chicken meatball skewer), mochi cheese bacon skewer, and buta no kakuni (boiled marinated pork). Their menu has so many options, perfect for sampling different kinds of Japanese food and I agree that it's a great place to go to for late-night munchies. We typically like to order a bunch of smaller dishes and share, since the price is fairly cheap. Lunch and dinner menus are different so some food items on the lunch menu may not be in the dinner menu and so on. I highly recommend their skewers and they also have a wide variety of creative udon dishes that is worth a try. Service is friendly and fast and there usually is no wait (I was a little hesitant to write a Yelp review because I lowkey want this place to myself but the world needs to know how awesome they are). Not coming back, food doesn't convince me. I wanted to try something new and I asked the service about the buckwheat noodles. I asked if I could try them, and she said no -_- Sure enough, I order them and did not like them at all. I didn't want to be mean and return them, but I was upset that they didn't let me try at least one noodle. I'm honestly surprised by the 3.5 stars overall rating. I've eaten a LOT of great Japanese food here and in Japan and Iccho is about as legit as you can get for a homestyle Japanese place in the US. It's a go to for my family. Prices are reasonable for the quantity of food that you get and the feel of the restaurant is homey. I stumbled across this place after shopping for groceries. As the saying goes, don't judge a book by its cover. AMBIANCE: Parking: It's near the mall so though there is space it can get pretty packed during conventional shopping/eating times. Seating: It's a pretty spacious space place, the seatings are all inside and ranges from tables to bar setup, in total the spot can fill up about 60 people. Feels: You're near the mall so it is quite a popping place. There are places from clothes shopping, theaters, or groceries. As for the restaurant itself, it has a vintage, simple and classic feel. There are a few pictures of art but mainly what grabbed my attention were menu items. The music is top 40 if you're into that stuff. In regards to the vibes, its a place for everyone, single, family, pairs, you name it. FOOD: Salmon Sashimi (Recommend) The portions were fair, the fish was fresh and pretty delightful. Salmon Skin Roll (Recommend) Sometimes salmon skin can be hard and feel a day old but for those that are hungry for salmon and craving a crunch, this is a good roll to get. Mint Chocolate & Cookies/Cream Mochi Ice Cream (Recommend) You can mix and match for an additional charge but I really enjoyed the mint chocolate as its refreshing and sweet. I have yet to try the cookies and cream (they always run out -_-;;) CUSTOMER SERVICE: I'd say hit or miss. If you're craving great Japanese food, then definitely come here. Please be aware they do get busy on Friday and Saturday evenings for dinner and the hours have changed due to Covid. They're open for lunch, then close for a couple hours until dinner. Additionally, they're closed on Tuesdays. The food here is made fresh and depending on how busy they are, it can take a little longer than expected. However, the food is worth the wait. My wife and three young kids came here for dinner tonight. I was looking forward to having some good Japanese food, since we're rarely in the area. We ordered a dinner set for the kids to share, and two kushi plates (plus a few extra skewers that weren't part of the sets) for my wife and me to have. The dinner set came out very quickly, which we appreciated, and we split the food for the kids. It actually was big enough that we were going to have to help them out, which was nice. And then...nothing. For the next twenty minutes, no one came to check on us and tell us about the status of our skewers. The kids ate and ate, and we ate the few pieces of teriyaki and tempura left over, and waited. The kids finished, and we waited. My beer, which I had been nursing in hopes of accompanying some delicious yakitori, was nearly gone. I finally flagged down a waitress, who looked briefly confused, and then remembered what we were waiting for. It would be here soon, she assured us. And then...nothing. For ten more minutes, the kids were getting restless having finished their food while mommy and daddy hadn't gotten their meals. We flagged a waitress down again, and she promised to go back and check. Five minutes passed, and the extra skewers finally arrived. We ate them. Five more minutes passed. I finished my beer. We finally got our food. "Thank you for your patience." That was it. No actual apology, just a trite phrase that is often used when your food is actually on time. I ripped through my skewers because I was pretty hungry. And you know, the food really was delicious. But a Japanese restaurant should be known for their service as well as their food. I saw an appalling lack of that tonight. During the time my wife and I were eating, we got one follow up from one of the waitresses who we asked to check on our food only because she wasn't sure that we had gotten it. And when we were done, they asked if we wanted any dessert. No offer of a dessert for our wait, or another beer. If they were waiting for us to ask for recompense, well, I wasn't going to because I didn't want to spend any more time there. We declined dessert. I settled the bill. I tipped 20%, because I know how little restaurant workers make and that they need this to get by. I tipped, but they didn't earn it tonight. read more

Update: We came back here and I got to try some of their sushi. If you want a Japanese restaurant with good sushi, don't go here. The sashimi didn't taste fresh at all. The dream roll was really good, but pricey for only 5 pieces (at 10.75) Servers can seem to be very confused and there are issues with food coming out on time. If you do want to still come here, get the bento boxes, chicken cutlet curry, chicken teriyaki, and their izakaya (only on dinner menu). They meet all my requirements for an izakaya and is one of the few places open past midnight. Yeah, the miso soup could taste better, the waiter forgot my order today, and the interior decor is getting dated, but I give 4.6 stars because I want a delicious Japanese sit down meal, it's midnight, and this place fits the bill. Came here with my mother in law who was visiting town for a couple days. We got seated and for 7min not one word from the employees. So I started staring at one of them to see if them would notice me but nothing. Only until the sushi chef saw that I was upset did he say something to her. Izakaya Iccho- stays open until 2am on most nights for the rare opportunity to dine late in Torrance where they still roll up the sidewalks early. Ume no Ya & Ramen Asa are the only others that stay open when all of Torrance is somnolent. Izakaya's are based mostly on Ippin Ryo-ri/small plates, although Iccho- does do a few combination plates of the top 5 hits of Japanese cuisine chosen by non-Japanese. Looking around the room reminds me of Izakaya in small towns far off the beaten path. In contrast, Kinjiro- in Little Tokyo is also an Izakaya, but one from cosmopolitan To-kyo- while Iccho is proud to be a down home joint. The main point of an Izakaya is to proffer a variety of alcoholic beverages to go with the food. There are the standard Asahi, Sapporo, Kirin, but there are also more specialized beers such as from Japanese microbreweries such as Kawaba, Orion; Sho-chu- (show chew)/Japanese vodka such as Iichiko (ee chee koh); Sake (sah keh) of all different kinds. I ordered: 1-3) Bacon Wrapped Asparagus & Bacon Wrapped Enoki (eh noh kee) straw mushrooms. The smoke cured bacon fat infused a nice meatiness to the asparagus and Enoki. Only drawback was that they were scorched black in places which l had to take off since there are reports of carcinogens in severely burned foods. Butabara/pork belley was a bit over cooked so the meat came out rather dry. Perhaps marinating or brining the pork belly w/ added spices beforehand would have made for a more luscious flavor & texture. 4) Shu-mai are steamed Sino-Japanese minced pork dumplings wrapped in won ton pasta served w/ a dollop of spicy yellow mustard. Seasoning was too light for me. Possibly more garlic, ginger, sesame oil, ground white pepper, hoisin or oyster sauce in the minced pork would have upped the savory meatiness. 5) Chawan Mushi/steamed savory egg custard soup had bits of shrimp, chicken, Kamaboko/fish terrine, spinach, Shi-take mushroom in broth enrich w/ light egg custard. Not "kosher", but to enliven the Chawan Mushi even more, I added a dash of Shichimi To-garashi/7spice chile & Sansho powder that has a bit of numbing heat. 1-5a) I got the large bottle of Sapporo Premium beer made in good old La Crosse, Wisconsin which was accompanied by Eda Mame/soybeans which were perfectly salted to bring out sweetness & also had freshness. The food at Iccho- may not be the most expertly prepared, and there were some lapses in creating a more accomplished cuisine, but the real draw is the fact it is open until 2 am every night except Sunday when Iccho- closes its door at 1 am, and the extensive menu where there is something for everyone. 3+ Yelp stars. read more

Honestly, Torrance houses some great low key Japanese restaurants. Iccho is another one of those restaurants. Good quality food in a very cozy environment. There's literally no wrong order you can make here. From udon to bento lunches to hot pot to sushi, Iccho has it all, and it's all delicious. Given the variety and quality of Iccho, do expect a wait during peak dining hours especially during dinner. You can wait up to half an hour if you come between 5-7pm since the restaurant isn't very large. So what more can I say? Eat good food, maybe enjoy a nice movie at the AMC afterward, or grab some groceries from Trader Joe's; after all Rolling Hills Plaza is way bigger than you think it is. read more

There are a ton of so called "Japanese" restaurants in Southern California, and Iccho is the real deal, along with Azuma in Gardena. Very traditional Japanese cuisine. We are lucky to have this place in our area. If not for Iccho, we would have to drive to Gardena or even J-Town. Let's address all the bad reviews and rebut. The bad reviews on the Sushi are due to the Americanized version of Sushi that is drenched with sauces, so that is what most people expect. That is not real Sushi. That is not Iccho Sushi. Iccho Sushi is on point with traditional Sushi. If you need sauces on your rolls, then you shouldn't be eating Sushi and stop trying to be trendy. Service has always been great. We have not had one single incident of bad service. For those of you who have, please give them another chance, and if they F-up again, that's on them. read more
