Administrated by the priests of Opus Dei who you may have heard of from The Da Vinci Code book and movie. Not that there are any clues here to an adventure or anything like that. It's a church, not a Hollywood movie set. Construction began in 1739 and completed in 1745. It is in the Baroque style. Today it serves as a minor basilica. This basilica church isn't so big, But it really got the wow moment. I like the style inside as well, it reminds me some similar churches back in Germany. Well, they are the same style after all. I did saw this two huge figures lying there with flowers and other stuff, not sure how I should call it in the correct way. I asked my partner and he told me it is a tradition of procession, they will carry them around the city, during the week before Easter. We were there near Easter. I think I already saw procession celemory the other day near the Palacio Real. But these two looked even more fancy. I found the painting on the roof quite nice. The church is not so well knowing but sure it is worth to visit. And no admission fee.

So it didn't take us long, we were already on our way to this place. But the first time when we were here, the church was closed that day. So we checked the schedule and came back here the second time about 12:00. Finally, this time is opened. It was 2 euro for the admission free. It might only required to the tourist. It wasn't much anyway. Right after I walked in, I just saw this endless painting all over the wall inside. It wasn't much decoration or instruments inside the chruch. It was quite interesting, I also saw a painter, who was painting the paintings on the wall insde. We were there for awhile, Just looking and admiring the amazing works on wall. The church isn't so big, actually. But the painting does made it more interesting. It got Baroque style and it was designed by Pedro Sánchez. As it name already tell, this place is dedicated to St Antony of Padua. I think this sure is one of the unique places I have visited so far. It isn't as popular as other city attractions in Madrid. But it is worth to visit.

Inside, however, is not as impressive. Don't get me wrong, it's a nice church but it is just that. It's kind of dark and gloomy in there. It wasn't packed at all, just a few people walking in and out. If you're walking by, stop in. If not, don't go out of your way to see it. If you want to see an amazing church in Madrid, go see Catedral de Nuestra Señora de la Almudena.

There is beautiful artwork, stained glass, chandeliers, and real masses that the general public can attend. We were fortunate to visit on a Sunday afternoon after leaving the Prado and respectfully entered and sat near the back. Despite not knowing enough Spanish to truly follow along, it was humbling to be able to honor the Catholic tradition in a Catholic country.

That includes a guided "tour" in Spanish only, which is just a guy moving from nave to nave talking out loud. Non-Spanish speakers shouldn't worry they're missing out, the tour is surprisingly boring even for a church tour. Any time spent here would be better spent up the road at the Catedral de la Almudena, which is both free and far more interesting.

Fifty people were killed when the cupola collapsed. Rebuilt again in 1767, it was torn down in 1869 due to a general poor condition. And then, the church was restablished in 1876. So much history! The current structure was reopened in 1902 in a neo-Gothic style. The tower is 60 meters tall and the vault itself is 23 meters. Well worth a tour to view the wonderful stained glass and chapel. Meanwhile, the companion in some ways of the other review I just wrote, of the Palace of the Stock…read moreExchange in Portugal, this tour is definitely of a gaudy palace built by royalty with a whole *lot* of stolen gold and jewels, so I was glad to learn that it isn't *still* owned by the royal family, it's owned by the state and mostly used for state functions, other than its purpose as far as tourists are concerned, being a museum of a fraction of the riches Spain owns (and not a coincidence, presumably, that they also built a museum of *more* of the riches owned by Spain, on display right next door, for a combined, reduced price.) The self-guided tour is worth it if you like seeing a bunch of super ornate architecture, furniture, artwork, etc. We got snippets of the actual tour as we passed each other at various points - I was happier being able to walk through the route at our own pace, which took about an hour. I felt sorry for the people whose tickets were for any time the following day, though, as it was randomly closed all day the next day we were in Madrid a few months ago, which I gather isn't an altogether rare thing to happen, that they take reservations and then close last minute. We got in in the nick of time, it seemed. By the way, if you have bags, you do have to leave your bags downstairs in a locker at a small additional fee. It was small enough I do remember exactly how much it even was, though, so it clearly wasn't a big deal.

Palacio Real de Madrid is probably my favorite palaces we've seen on our travels…read more I loved that they had these massive air purifiers so it didn't smell stale or dusty (it was incredibly comfortable), but I also adored the absolutely gorgeous purple wallpaper and how much care had been taken in the decor inside the building. Absolutely do a tour if you have a chance as ours gave such a clear impression of the space and added such a nice depth to our visit. It was one of my favorite things we did while in Madrid, and I can't recommend visiting Palacio Real de Madrid enough.
