First time I stumbled in, the places was filled with Japanese families and couples. The first rule of Asian restaurants applies here... if it is full of Asians, the food will be good. The menu is diverse ranging from sushi to salads to curries and there is an extensive range of sake and other Japanese alcohol. I first time I enjoyed miso soup, gyoza, and japanese pancake for around $20 which is very reasonable, as the rest of their menu. The second time I had the chicken katsu curry with salad for $16 which was huge and very filling. Yum. I'm going to miss this place. I hope more locals appreciate it now :)

The menu is full of very authentic and tasty items (we have tried a number of them over the years), but by far our favorite which we have without fail every time we dine here is their Bakudan Tofu. This is basically sashimi slices (salmon, tuna and one other I don't remember) and tofu in a spicy sesame broth - totally yummy! The owners are always very friendly, and even remember us even though we aren't here overly often! Waka are currently undergoing a big renovation to it's outdoor dining area, they are hoping to be back 100% by January 2016. For now, it's only dining inside.

The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner however they are closed in between. Upon entering you are presented with menus and are able to choose a table to sit at. Their menu is very broad ranging from meat to ramen to fish and sushi. Ive been about five times already and always stick with the sushi while my partner orders a meal. The white dragon roll, pink dragon roll, and california roll are my favorites. Its very hard to find a sushi spot in Australia that makes actual rolls instead of nigiri so the moment I discovered this place I was hooked. The quality is outstanding and sauces they add are so delicious! My partner is in love with their garlic chicken and orders it each time. Prices are very reasonable and service is usually very fast. Highly recommend checking this place out.

The entrance is through a secret barn-like door, which confused me the first time I went. Inside they have several types of seating options. The first time I came was Valentines Day and was sat at a communal table. Yesterday when I was able to get a private table. They also have tables for large parties where you sit on pillows (standard japanese style) and bar seating as well. For the food they have a huge selection on the menu. Lots of different dishes ranging from seafood to sushi to meats and everything in between. Both times I opted to do the Omakase menu as that seemed like the best deal. The first half of the items came out pretty fast but the second half took awhile. The salted edamame is delicious and still comes with the stems, which allows you to see its very fresh and not the frozen kind you buy in stores. Next I was presented with delicious sashimi. They had salmon, tuna, kingfish, and barramundi. Normally this dish comes with oysters but due to my food preference they just gave more sashimi. Following this dish the wagyu carpaccio was presented. This normally comes with jalapeño salsa however I requested it not to be spicy. Next was the shrimp tempura - huge pieces of shrimp lightly battered. My favorite dish was after that which was the black miso cod. AMAZING! The was its cooked and accompanied with the sauce is mouth-watering. Next came the hot stone beef. This was an interesting concept as the beef is actually cooked on the stone while they pour some fire liquid on top. Lastly I was presented with some nigiri and miso soup to end the Omakase menu. All of the food is outstanding and the service is remarkable. I'm from the States and this restaurant very closely resembles Nobu and Katsuya. Would highly recommend to everyone!

Service is always great and Id advise a reservation if coming during peak hours. Their lunch specials are fantastic. $27 for steak plus one additional item. I tent to get prawn. It all comes freshly made on the teppanyaki grill. Their main courses come with a soup, salad, and steamed rice as well. However I usually upgrade to the fried rice. You also get a choice of sauce, the garlic is my favorite! However two other sauces accompany your dish for dipping. I believe one is ginger and the other is mustard. The ginger one is amazing! There is lots of different seating options. You can get a fancy-looking communal table, regular table, booth, or sit by the teppanyaki grills and watch the chefs cook your food while performing tricks. All the food comes out relatively fast and tastes delicious. They know how to season and cook it properly. The waitresses are always full of smiles and very accommodating. There is a surcharge if you use Amex or dine on holidays however with their reasonable prices I would still come on those days. For dinner the selection is a lot wider and you can add on sushi dishes or huge combinations. Everything is made fresh and will leave you stuffed. Highly recommend this place!

Lets start with the basics...they have underground parking which is helpful if you cannot find street parking. Reservations are easy to make by calling or texting them. And their quality of fish is fantastic. These reasons alone are why I gave it several stars. However the service has truly gone downhill and their new waitresses are not very helpful. We made a reservation today for 6pm so that we could make it to a movie at 7pm nearby. Upon entering there were only 4 other people seated who already had some food. We ordered our drinks and when she returned with them told our waitress we were ready to order. This was at 605pm. Then came time to wait. After twenty minutes the restaurant started to get more busy. Lots of big groups coming in and many that the restaurant employees personally knew. We sat there patiently waiting as we weren't even given the miso soup that we ordered. After another 20 minutes (by this time it was 745pm) the waitress came by apologizing and asked if we would like the miso soup. Confused at this point we stated yes and asked when the sushi would be ready. We mentioned how we've been watching people coming in after us getting their sushi before us. She apologized again and went to get the soup. I'm not sure if she forgot to initially put in our order, but that is definitely what it seems like. After another 10 minutes (at 755pm) we finally received the sushi we ordered. It had been a 50 minute wait since initially ordering. Another waitress brought it by and apologized because the sushi chef was busy. Again I had mentioned that other people were getting serviced before us and she simply couldn't explain why. I love this restaurant and have had some great experiences however their service and bias ways have definitely made me start looking to go elsewhere.

The service was good and the waitresses were really attentive but I think for the price it was a massive let down. The miso soup was good. The beef tataki was prepared earlier and my partner said it had a roast beef taste to it. The edges were cooked but raw in the middle and cold. Fridge cold. We shared the prawn and vegetable gyoza which tasted like the pastry was stale or suffered some serious freezer burn before being fried. The inside was a bit mushy. It wasn't terrible but it wasn't good had no crunch or crispy to it. I had the Teppan which is tofu and vegetables in a sizzling plate. It came out sizzling and 2 of the tofu pieces were soft and nice and the other 2 were a bit hard and dense. Flavour was acceptable. Way too much onion and not enough other vegetables. My partner had the teriyaki chicken which had large chunks of chicken.. cooked well enough.. the pieces were large so there wasn't enough marinade to go and it was more chicken to marinade ratio... Both our rices came out tepid almost cold instead of hot so I don't think it was fresh. Some of the rice chunks were hard. I think especially at any kind of Asian restaurant. The one thing that should be excellent is the rice and it wasn't. Actually that's probably a good way to describe the evening... it just felt not fresh and I think for a $70 dinner for two, no drinks. The meals should be at least that. We didn't order from the train just the set menus. I definitely won't be coming back and if you come from Melbourne where the Jap food is pretty much always good and at this price point great... be prepared to be let down!

I loved the shot of sake as well it was smoothest I had ever had. So food wise I cannot fault honestly! However food is just 1 component of a dining experience and what let us down was the service. From the moment we got in I felt rushed and felt like we weren't valued customers. It was not customer centric, not for us at least. We had a pram and they weren't helpful to allow us keep our foldable pram away. Fine I get it. It blocks the road. My friend and I ordered: beef, pork belly, shrimp, ribs, corn, mushroom, salmon sashimi, salad, salmon sashimi salad, gyoza, takoyaki, edamame, kimchi, and ox tongue. The ox tongue was yummy! It was thinly sliced and flavoured very well. The corn and mushroom were cooked with butter; yumm! The salmon sashimi just melted in my mouth! The workers there were very friendly and helpful. It seems like they lack English, so it was a little difficult to communicate with them. What I found was a little annoying was when they greeted customers. It was cool they they greeted customers every time they came and left; however, they would yell at the top of their lungs. The place isn't very big so you could definitely hear it every time.
