The layout is okay, but for whatever reason I've never found this place to be that easy to maneuver and easily browse. I've had staff help me with some suggestions and their picks have been successful half the time with the other half being selections I hated. Maybe just bad luck but service wide, I've found other private wine stores to be a bit more knowledgeable and usually staff picks have been much more successful. It's a good place if you know what you want and are just there to pick up a wine and go.

I couldn't tell you when I last went to one. It has been definitely over a decade. I had nothing better to do. I went ahead and checked it out. The signs are bilingual. Saint Boniface is the French part of Winnipeg. It truly felt like being on vacation in a completely different part of the world. This plaza had a ton of parking. I was parked in front of No Frills. I just walked over after placing my groceries in my rental vehicle. Liquor Mart procedures have changed since I last visited one. I walked through the first set of doors and was about to head over to the second set when a woman said that I needed to drop by her counter. She was behind plexiglass. The cool thing about once being a Manitoban, but flipping back to being a full-time Ontarian, is that you can simply say that you're an out-of-towner. It was all true. All was forgiven. She asked for ID. I presented my Ontario driver's licence and placed it through the slot. She took it and scanned it in her system. I'm assuming that the database will retain these details for a while. I asked her whether showing your ID before heading into any Liquor Mart in Manitoba was now the norm. She said yes, to deter robberies. I get it. I got my ID back. I thanked her and continued to shop. I looked at the rum section. I like rum and coke. All the bottles were too large for me to get one for a week's stay. Staff are nice. One male staffer asked if I needed any help. I said that I was browsing and I really didn't know yet. Another female staffer moved her body right in front of me to put a bottle of something back on the shelf. Maybe it's me. I felt that move was rude. Why can't you say, "Excuse me," so that I can move and you can then put the product away? Perhaps I'm way too polite. I didn't enjoy a huge body abruptly in front of my eyes. I firmly believe that it's a Winnipeg thing. This move happened to me a bunch of times with other Winnipeggers. Not cool. The woman maybe sensed that I disliked her move: "Need any help?" she asked. "No," I stated. Frankly, you need help with your manners. If you also get a one-word reply from me, chances are that I'm perturbed by your actions. I wanted a summery, refreshing drink. Rum mojitos? Sounds great. Jack Daniels with Coke zero? Brilliant. Snapple that has been spiked? Ooh, tempting! What tugged at my boozy heartstrings? Creamsicle blast. It's the taste of a creamsicle spiked with vodka. Yes, please! What's cool is that you get two varieties of this product at this store. There was a larger can with a ton of sugar. There was also a six-pack version in which the cans were slimmer and didn't contain any sugar. Yes to six cans! This six-pack of creamsicle blast was perfect for a week's stay. They were perfectly chilled in my fridge when I returned back from a fun day as a tourist. I went to pay at the checkout. The nice man there was bilingual. He started with French. I answered in French and then went into English. It was my small bilingual contribution. He saw that I was from Ontario and asked where. I said in Markham, just north of Toronto. I also mentioned that I used to live in Winnipeg, which prompted him to say that it must be great coming back home. It is and was. It is a second home, except that things have changed, but still feel familiar and homey. Liquor Mart accepts Air Miles. I had my barcode scanned. I then paid with a credit card. Done! I thanked the man and carried my six-pack of creamsicle happiness to my vehicle. I miss this drink so much. I don't recall seeing this sugar-free version at my local LCBO. I'll need to check it out sometime when it reopens from the strike. (264)

The store was also pretty much deserted, but that's besides the point. Legal drinking age is 18, which explains why some of the customers looked like highschool kids. The store was clean, and actually had decent beer and wine selection. Then again, I am no connoisseur, so what do I know. If you want local beer, there's a local brewery called Fort Garry. All of their local stuff (all 3 flavours) are on a single tiny little rack. Ask the staff to point it it to you. Can't go wrong with liquor anywhere~

I don't shop here too often because it's out of the way and I've been happy with the selection at other independent wine stores closer to me. In every wine store and LC I've walked into, there has always been an acknowledgment of me as a customer and there's almost always the question of "can I help you with anything?" It never happens here. I'm younger than the "regulars" here but I'm also here to spend and buy some nice wine so it'd be nice if the staff were more courteous. Though I have to admit that the staff are very knowledgeable once they talk to you. But that usually occurs when I am with my boyfriend - not sure why that makes a difference or when you go up and ask for assistance. They have some interesting wine events where they partner up with some restaurants in the city to do some wine pairing/tasting nights. I've attended an event and found that it was interesting though not as informative as previous wine events I've attended (at another establishment). But it was an interesting night out nonetheless though it can be pricey. Depending on the event, it can cost between $35-$90 per person.
