I must've been famished when I stopped by Ilopango Restaurant. I was driving down Venice in a hurry when the $1.35 pupusa special caught my attention, so I quickly pulled over and ran inside. I asked the young lady at the front for four pupusas and let her know I was short on time. She told me it would take about 10 minutes and also mentioned they were pretty small. The special only came with chicharrón and cheese, which was the only flavor available, but honestly I didn't care because the price was too good to pass up. I ordered four pupusas, paid with my credit card (just a heads up, there's a 4% card fee since they prefer cash), and waited for my food. They came with the cabbage slaw and salsa on the side, and wow -- they were delicious. Everything was made fresh on the spot, hot, and full of flavor. Even my son, who usually doesn't like these flavors, loved them. He ate them piping hot without hesitation. Fresh, tasty, affordable, and worth the stop. I definitely recommend this place. read more

The place is not the best looking on the inside. The outside seating may be your best option. Good thing there is plenty. I stopped by for a Friday afternoon lunch. The sign with their pupusas on sale got my attention. When I ordered the food they told me it would be a 10 min wait. The place has a very small private parking lot. Be careful if you have a SUV since the parking spots were kinda narrow. The food though good was nothing out of this world. The pupusas were heavy on pepper and lacked the main ingredient. When biting into it it was almost like just eating a tortilla. They seemed to have skimmed on the filling or cheese and chicharron. With so many options for Salvadoran food in the area it might be a while if I get back to this place. read more

They overcharge you on tax they try to tell you that the taxes 10.25% because they're near downtown that is a LIE!! L.A. County tax is 9.5% even Beverly Hills it's 9.5% and that's the most expensive real estate in the country so pay attention to your bill and what they try to charge you. I don't appreciate them being sneaky and then lying to their customers. For that, that cost them a tip and not going back so they have lost a customer all for being shady. 2 days before going to this restaurant I was shopping in downtown Figueroa Sephora location I looked at my receipt the sales tax is 9.5 0%. I came home and actually did the math of what this restaurant charged me in tax and they charged me 11% tax even higher then the 10.25% that they lied about. This place makes me feel like I'm back in El Salvador-- from the regional vocabulary of the waitresses to the Salvadoran drink options (hibiscus tea, tamarind juice, and Salvadoran horchata), this place reminds me of the home cooked meals I'd eat down there. It's a bit on the greasier side and the pupusas are a little softer than I would prefer, but the flavor is great. The loroco/ cheese pupusas are by far my favorite (and again, I was surprised to even see loroco on the menu-- it's a pickled flower bud that adds a slight but pleasantly bitter aftertaste to the cheese.) The tamales are also interesting as well-- in addition to meat they have potato, olives, and the sauce is inside. Once again, it was nice to have the familiar Salvadorean version of a dish that (in the US) is always prepared the Mexican way-- the same is true of their horchata, which differs from the usual Mexican one. It's cheap and tasty comfort food in a no-frills setting, with fast and friendly service. I'm a real Yelper because.... I continue writing reviews although Yelp! is ignoring my Elite requests. I'm also a real Yelper because I met great people at Yelp! events and some of them even became friends (although they forgot about me and didn't invite me to the latest Yelp! party). And my true Yelpiness unleashes by giving this El Salvatorian place in LA on Venice 3 stars. It's a slightly different experience- I got there by accident because I took the wrong way- but worth a try if you want to avoid the tons of Korean and Mexican places in the area south of K-town. I got there at 6pm on a Saturday night and one lonely lady was working behind the counter. I left my Spanish skills at home, the same did she with her English. Communicating was fun though, and I managed to order chicken, rice, beans, a fried egg, tortillas, and "koka kola". It took a while, but I wasn't in a hurry. Instead, I enjoyed my outdoor seating in a tent directly on Venice (I think I was sitting on the street already), studied pictures of famous El Salvadorian politicians/military guys/pop stars (cannot tell the difference) and had friendly eye contact with the happy El Salvadorian family at the next table until Little Pedro smashed his plate. I had too much bones in my chicken, but I'm not picky. And the koka kola was good. If you're taking the wrong way and want a less fancy dining experience, you ought to try out this place. Although the decor is atrocious, I always leave in a happy state of "good food coma" There are very few places that make me feel that I'm being served food that seems authentically Salvadorean. Came here for a standard El Salvador breakfast. Ordered the chorizo egg. Nice, the chorizo wasn't overpowering and the eggs were nicely cooked. Came with a nice El Salvador crema. Also had some standard refried beans and rice with a bit of typical cheese, also came with some nicely cooked plantains The highlight would be the 2 pupusa style tortillas, which were thick. If you call them, they may not acknowledge it, and when you remind them they tell you it's just the pupusas revueltas on sale. In the words of Bart Simpson, "JUH??!" I've had better pupusas and their version of horchata was so grainy and got me coughing and wanting water. It also had a very unusual flavor. Nice place to get a cheap salvadorian breakfast. All of the breakfast plates come with rice, beans, platanos, crema, eggs (your choice) and tortillas or bread. The coffee was folgers (not that good). The platanos plate doesn't come with rice- so it's better to get one of the other plates because it's pretty much the same thing. So today i tried this place out , lets start with service , me andy girlfriend had to get the menu our selfs because the waitress was nowhere to be found , about 10 mins later she finally shows up tryna give us the menu but by that time we were ready to order . I'm giving it one star for the sole reason that the lady who attended us at around 2 pm gave us super crappy service. We went in for the pupusas special to go. She gave us her attitude, and when asked if we could pay she answered, um if you want to with an annoying tone. Once we got the pupusas we noticed that she gave us no napkins nor fork or anything but the pupusas. We asked her if we could have some and she answered that since they were on special they didn't give any napkins nor cutlery. Serious? What restaurant does this? I am of Salvadoran descent and I love pupusas. I've been coming here for years. I try to stop by every time I am in la. And I've never commented. But these past two times I have received substandard quality. The fact that prices have gone up does not bother me as much as the dry and ONLY chicaron pupusas and calling them reveltas. When I made a comment, I was assured that no, the pupusas were in fact reveltas and not just chicaron. I could not check the pupusas, but an hour later when I was back home I learned the truth. There are better options especially in Korea town. I will look around for better spots. I'm sure that eating in the restaurant you will get better quality. read more

I love pupusas..here unfortunately are at a OK standard. When I 1st came here when I was young in my teens ..I liked the beach style Hut with the Salvy decor. The food was good ..then again as a teen everything is good with your crazy taste buds...anyways the man who I believe was the owner would always hook it up and give me a tab.. I was young and sometimes didn't have enough and he would hook me up and ofcourse the following week I would pay him back ..and since I didnt have enough again he would just hook me up..again, I'm young..tabs as in $1-$3..anyways ..that's a little history ..but fast forward to now..what can I say.. greasy..oily and small..totally different than before ..the Curtido is delicious ..they still get a crowd so they're doing something right.
