What an adorable place!…read more My nickname is 'Puddleduck', so of course on the way back to Hobart from visiting Richmond I had to stop in and visit this winery. And I'm so glad we did! The first thing that welcomes you is a giant sign letting you know you're welcome to 'Reverse BYO' - that is that you bring the food and they'll provide the wine. A great idea and muchly appreciated, as if you're on a budget you'll have more to spend on wines! The setting for this winery can only be described as idyllic - the main building sits on the edge of a dam and has a deck outside. We happened to visit on a perfect day and sat for a while in the sunshine on the deck watching the various water birds. There's a beautiful grassed area with chairs and tables and even a children's playground and a big area for the kids to run around and let off steam. There were a few families enjoying lunch and a few drinks and I love that they cater to families so well. We opted for the $5 wine tasting at the bar - there is also an option for a $15 sit down tasting or a $25 one which includes a cheese platter. All of those costs are deducted if you choose to purchase a bottle. My favourite was the Pinot Noir which smelled and tasted amazing. They also have all these options available as a cider tasting too! The guy who was serving welcomed us enthusiastically when we arrived and told us a bit about tastings etc. He also apologised and told us that the service may be a little slower because he was running the show on his own. This is a family business and his mum had an appointment so was unable to help out that day. I appreciated the forewarning and preemptive apology but it was not needed - the service was great. When we went to pay for our tasting he even offered them for free as he felt like he had not been able to be as attentive to us as he wanted to be! I absolutely loved my time at Puddleduck and will endeavour to visit whenever I am back in Hobart. It's well worth the drive from the city!

The 'shop' is still a fairly small building by the pond (major extension coming this year) but with a lots of outdoor seating around the water either under umbrellas on the grass or under the marquee. The Puddleduck wines are great (do NOT miss out on trying Bubbleduck) and you can kick back whilst working through the wine list with a cheese platter made up of 'wicked' cheeses produced just down the road. Don't want cheese? No problem! Puddleduck allows 'reverse BYO'. You bring whatever picnic food you want and they supply the wine! Puddleduck makes a great wine tasting stop along the Coal Valley route, but if the weather is good I recommend putting aside an afternoon and relaxing - the whole business is a family affair and it feels like it, with warm friendly service that makes you feel instantly like old friends. Other important notes about Puddleduck; you can meet internationally famous 'wine dog' Basil and his cohorts Polly and Sybil. The gin selection is exceptional and there's always a gin of the week, which is a great opportunity to try a gin you may not have encountered before. Society also now makes their own tonic syrup in house, and I believe they're the first place in Hobart to be doing that. ALL THE KUDOS! It's such a special sort of offering and shows how much they care about their drinks. Also back to gin again, Society do gin tasting platters... correct. Half nips of four different gins (be it a Tasmanian platter, an Australian platter or a tailored platter) with a splash of tonic and a garnish to suit each different gin. A really fun way to try a few different variations in one sitting, because gins can be so different! I LOVE GIN! There are always plenty of events happening at Society too, all posted on their facebook, from regular weekly events like Tapas Tuesday to one-off events like fundraiser dinners and spirit masterclasses.

Who would have thought I'd find great American style food in Launceston! I can honestly say this is better than most things in the area. Food was exceptional. We split the seafood gumbo and special BBQ plate with brisket, wings, and ribs. I've been living in Sydney for a few years without tasting accurate imitation American southern food until coming down to Tasmania. The flavours were on point, though parts of the execution left things to be desired. The gumbo had the right flavours and perfect amount of kick. The ribs fell off the bone. Fried chicken seemed like it had been sitting around for a bit so lost the crispy on the outside, though made up for it with decadent juicy on the inside texture. Sidewinder fries need to be on every menu. Decor leaves a little to be desired; loved the art but had a too heavy of a dive bar feel. All in all I will be back any time I'm in Launceston and look forward to what next seasons menu holds.

Dier Makr has all the ingredients to make me fall in love with it (restaurant style, not marriage…read morestyle), and yet... I walked away underwhelmed. Or, not really... maybe just whelmed (are we in France?). Here's the thing--recounting individual dishes after my dinner date, I was pretty excited about each (though the main flavour of the night was "salty"), but my response for the entire dinner was "it was ok". I think it felt like it was missing a main meat course, or something, like the big shebang wasn't there? I'm confused and upset. The thing about Dier Makr, though, is that the menu is seasonal and changes month to month and sometimes (often?) week to week, so I only need to give it a few weeks and it'll be different, and I'll give it another chance, and perhaps then I'll be blown away. Watch out for the update, I guess. Side note: if I was rating this on drinks alone, it would get five stars. The first time I visited was just for drinks (and a couple of bar snacks), and after a round or two of menu item cocktails (all delicious) my friends and I challenged the bar with a couple of rounds of specific orders, which they totally knocked out of the park. We left that night a little bit in love with the place. Before the cocktails, we shared a bottle of wine, which came with a little handwritten note of staff opinion about the wine. Every single wine in the cellar had one. I wanted to read through that cellar like it was a library. Honestly, five stars.
