    Ray's Garage Doors

I originally reviewed Ray's Garage Doors in 2021 after an outstanding experience with them. Five…read moreyears later, I needed them again, and this experience reinforced exactly why I remembered both the company and Taylor's name all these years later. Our garage door was accidentally hit, bending the bottom panel and knocking it off the tracks. I called Ray's and spoke with Stephanie, the same person I remembered dealing with before. She contacted Taylor, who had worked on our garage previously. This was completely last-minute with no appointment, and within about 20 minutes he was at our house. He even remembered the house and the work they had done here years ago. What impressed me most was watching him work. Because we have built-in shelving very close to both sides of the garage door, there wasn't enough clearance to simply correct the cables the easier way. Taylor had to remove the tracks on both sides, unwind and properly reset the cables, put everything back together and then carefully reset the spring tension. He took the extra time required to do it correctly. There was no rushing and no shortcutting. Afterward, we noticed that when the door closed there was still a gap between the bottom of the door and the garage floor. Taylor looked at it and immediately knew what needed to be done. He had me open the door, made an adjustment to the opener, had me close it again, checked the result and then continued making minute adjustments until the door sat exactly where it should. When he finished, the seal along the floor looked like it did when the door was brand new in 2021. What made that especially impressive was that this is an older Craftsman opener from 2008. Taylor didn't pull out a manual or start searching his phone trying to figure out how to adjust it. He knew exactly where the controls were, what each adjustment did and how much to change them. That kind of experience matters because improperly adjusting garage-door travel can create an entirely new problem. He simply knew the equipment and methodically dialed it in until it was right. The bottom panel itself was bent, and this would have been an incredibly easy opportunity for someone to tell me I needed a new garage door. Taylor didn't. He told me he had seen much worse, that the damage really wouldn't be noticeable from outside, and that the door did not need to be replaced. That may have impressed me as much as anything else. What stood out wasn't only what he fixed. It was what he didn't try to sell me. Then he noticed something I never would have seen. With the door completely open, the stem on the lower left roller only had about 3/8 of an inch remaining where it engages the corner of the door. The door has operated that way for years without a problem, and Taylor explained that the chance of it coming out was very small. But rather than saying, "It's probably fine," he told me he wanted to come back Saturday with a longer 7-inch roller so there would be much more engagement and that small potential failure point would essentially be eliminated. That is the difference between "good enough" and doing a job correctly. He also confirmed something I already suspected. My 2008 Craftsman garage door opener is nearing the end of its life. Once again, there was no sales pitch and no pressure to replace it immediately. He simply explained what he was seeing and recommended a very good replacement for whenever the time comes. This is where the value of dealing with somebody like Taylor becomes very apparent. He knows what he is doing, charges a fair price for the work, fixes what actually needs fixing and doesn't manufacture reasons to make the bill larger. There are plenty of service industries today where customers understandably worry about being upsold or being told they need expensive repairs they may not actually need. That has never been my experience with Ray's Garage Doors. Taylor's competence is exceptional. He is meticulous, efficient, knowledgeable, honest and straightforward, and Stephanie once again made getting somebody here incredibly easy. When Ray's helped me in 2021, I told Taylor they would be my first and only call the next time I needed garage-door service. Five years later, that is exactly what happened. I still remembered his name and the company because of how well they treated me the first time. After today's experience, I have even more reason to remember them. Ray's Garage Doors has earned my business, and I recommend them without hesitation.
