The sad story of impressionable years daycare can be compared to the story of a beloved bakery that, at one time, baked every cake from scratch and with care, only to compromise the quality of their product because they scaled the business to an extent that the quality that was once associated with the business was impossible to maintain. It's a common story, one that could be avoided by tempering growth until the business has a chance to scale with the increase in business. This maintains product quality while also adapting the methodology to serve more customers. It's a difficult process that many businesses fail to account for, which is why we see once-great businesses close their doors when better options become available. A once-great daycare that has grown to the point where the quality of the education and supervision the kids receive has become substandard. My family has had a long history with Impressionable Years. Once owned by parents, now passed down to their daughter. The parents built this company from the ground up. The population cap was low in those days, and the parent owners were on top of their game. The employees were of high quality, the owners were always there, and the collaboration between the parent and the center was easy, streamlined, and productive. That is no longer the case. My three children went through Impressionable Years, and I lament that my third child did not receive the same standard as my older two did. When dropping my child off, teachers are commonly too busy talking amongst themselves or doomscrolling on their phones. Most teachers won't even look up from their phones when acknowledging your presence. This can only communicate that this practice is tolerated. The feedback you receive from the school will commonly be short-handed and unhelpful. I can forgive this for most things because when you have a class of 20 children, I don't expect a fully articulated essay on my kids' day. This becomes an issue, however, when your child doesn't meet the center's expectations. They will berate you with short-handed comments (that are pre-written) that say your child made terrible choices that day. But here is the main issue with the center: when you push for specifics, you will commonly get the cold shoulder. The owner of the establishment (Courtney) makes high-level decisions and then blames her mother when she knows the outcome will be controversial or is not justifiable given the student handbook. Her Mother handed over the business to her almost 2 years ago. A director who deflects responsibility is a giant red flag. When my child was dismissed from the daycare for "bad behavior," I asked for the video footage so I could see what happened (this was denied). I asked for specifics on what happened, but when Courtney kept deflecting, and I kept pressing her, she hung up on me and then refused to pick up the phone again. If you take nothing else away from this, then highlight this part. If you ask basic questions about your child, they will crash out because you don't buy the narrative that they are giving to you. The reason they can't give you specifics is that your child will not be adequately supervised. The teachers are too busy on their phones, talking on their phones (please count how many ear buds are actively in the ears of the teachers when dropping your kids off), and the center is removed from any responsibility because they can kick your kids at anytime with no notice. There are other problems as well: They commonly send employees home when the student population doesn't justify their presence. Yet, you have to pay full tuition whether your kids show up or not. This is a predatory practice that seeks to maximize profits while causing inconvenience to parents. This little flaw will show itself when they put your kids in a room that is developmentally inappropriate for your child due to "staffing problems," because the room's population didn't meet the standard for them to pay someone to be there all day. Impressionable Years was a great daycare. It is no longer. This is what happens when something is given to someone who doesn't have to earn it. The quality of this place has been run into the ground. And even though the cake you get isn't quite what it used to be, you should, as a parent, ask yourself what you are paying for, and whether the management is competent and coherent in their ability to communicate to parents. I had a very disappointing experience, there isn't genuine concern for the overall well-being of the children. Incidents involving children occurs. Ms. Kiara displays unprofessional behavior. She allows personal relationships to interfere with her professional responsibilities, creating conflicts that negatively impact the daycare environment and, ultimately, the children. Her involvement of personal relationships with male parents at the workplace is inappropriate, and her communication with parents is disrespectful and lacking professionalism. Do not send your kids here Additionally, Ms. Carrie as well in particular, spoke to me in a very disrespectful and inappropriate manner regarding my child. Her tone was rude, dismissive, and unprofessional, very aggressive which is unacceptable when addressing a parent's concerns and down talking children; racism has occurred at this daycare as well. Parents should feel safe, informed, and respected when entrusting others with their children. Unfortunately, that was not my experience at this daycare. Stay away and stay aware. It's surprising because it's a very good location in Crofton it's the staff that is unprofessional and my child felt as though they were treating others better than my child, unfair and poorly. read more

I love Impressionable Years but more importantly my kids love it too! My daughter attends preschool there and my son is there for before/after care. They also both go there for summer camp. They are open most of the year and provide drop off days so it's convenient if school is closed but you still have to work. Along with their extended hours, it's definitely a great value overall. They do lots of fun, family friendly activities for the holidays and throughout the year. They also do a parent's night out once a month, which is amazing in itself. I'm sure every parent could use a night off lol I also have to mention the Director, Ms. Courtney, and how she is truly amazing. A few years ago when the school hours changed (everyone started going at the same time) a lot of centers stopped providing transportation to my son's school. I approached Ms. Courtney and pleaded with her to see if there was any way they could help. I was desperate. I needed childcare! Instead of blowing me off (as she very well could have) she made it happen! She is truly a lifesaver. Lastly, the staff is so friendly, caring and responsive. I can communicate with them easily through an app and I love the daily photos they provide on it. We've been there for 3 years now and it's comforting to know my kids are in good hands. I would highly recommend them to anyone looking for childcare! read more

We are a couple years removed from the drama now, so I will try to be brief. This place started out amazing. They people in the baby rooms loved each kid and the babies were not an afterthough. They helped babies reach milestones and did amazing work with my kid. Each baby was loved there. However, they cared only about money and over-filled the classes to the point where my son was held back in classes he was too old for because they had filled his spot in the class he should be in with a new student. They told me my son was violent and an issue. When I asked for the footage of an incident of my son being violent, they showed me a teach physically pick up and throw my child into the bathroom and scream at him to go. My son ended up on the floor of the bathroom curled up crying hysterically--that is what they said was my son being violent. One day, I brought him to his classroom and that same teacher dragged him out before he even had his coat off. I had not even left the building yet. She dragged him out for no reason. She was just shouting at him saying he was a bad kid and she doesn't want him in her room. she tossed him out into the middle of the school with no one watching him. I grabbed him and took him home. A week later, I went to pick him up. I went in and saw there was 1 person watching 14 kids. The classroom size was set to be 6 kids with 1 teacher. But it was 14 kids with one aid. No teacher. I reported them to the state. My son never went back there. I heard from parents that were in that class some horrific stories about what their children continued to endure while there and I am so glad I pulled him. read more

My daughter has been attending this daycare for the past year, and I couldn't be more pleased with the care she receives. The staff is incredibly nurturing, attentive, and genuinely invested in the well-being and development of the children. Every day, my daughter comes home happy, and I can see the positive impact the daycare has had on her social skills and learning. The facility is clean, safe, and filled with engaging activities that keep the kids excited to learn and play. Communication with parents is excellent, with regular updates and photos that connect me to my daughter's daily experiences. My son started at this daycare when he was 9 months old while social distancing was still in effect. My tour with them was virtual, and I had toured many daycares at the time, but this one left me with that "good gut feeling" that this was the place! We haven't looked back since! My son has truly thrived here, as I always notice that he's learned new things even before I've introduced it to him. He has been loved by his teachers so much and he's already made so many friends. He is 2 years old now and says his friends names everyday on his way to school. Impressionable Years is wonderful and I would highly recommend it! I will say that they've had some turnover with some teachers and similar to many daycares, one of our cups went missing and they could improve on some organizational skills but we are all human and they always keep my baby safe and loved and I know it's a great place because everyday since he's started, he's been excited when we arrived and any question or concern I've ever had, has been addressed timely! They are also super clean and clean the toys and rooms often and have "parents night out" usually once a month which is an awesome way to know your kid is with someone you know and trust and you can have a nice evening out or even at home to yourself! I could say so much more, but all I need to say is, it's a great place. We have been with impressionable years for about a year and a half now. I always like to come back and update my reviews after true trial and error. We still love them. The staff is amazing. We have three kids there and they are definitely like family. We have great lines of communication with the director and all staff members (even the janitorial staff- we miss you shorty!). We will be with them for the long haul and will be a little disappointed when all of the kids are out of daycare. Curriculum and activities- trust and believe me, the kids stay active mentally and physically. They have so many things for the kids to participate in and learn from. We have so much artwork saved and recycled. (While reading reviews is a significant part of our culture, you must do your due diligence and use emotional intelligence. Negative reviews are 10x more damaging to BoBs. Please keep that in mind when reading negative reviews and writing them. There has been a bit of turnover with the teachers in his class, but the assistants and administration have made the transitions smoothly so that the children are able to adjust, and it seems as if most of the other classrooms are fairly static. My 2 year old son was enrolled for 8 weeks and has been bitten 6 times (even on the face) has come home with scratches, scrapes,bruises, welts and much more and when i asked who was hurting my child they said they didnt know and had to rewatch the cameras and said it happened cuz my child took toys... They advertise potty training but my son would come home with a dirty pull up most of the time. They said he had a problem with hitting and asked me to come monitor him, which i did. I saw another boy antagonizing my child. come to find out he was one of the teachers kid's... when i pointed out the other child's behavior they told me my son was the problem and told me to talk to his pediatrician, which i did. his pediatrician found no issues with my son. i paid good money to make sure my child was being taken care of. Daycare is supposed to be there so you can work without worrying about your baby. Instead i dreaded going to work.. Not to mention they gave my 2 year old homework and assessments and told me he didn't respect his teachers. HE'S TWO! The facility is very unorganized. every time i would pick him up there would be a new girl 'watching' all the kids while they did whatever they wanted.the director is only there on certain days for 2 hours at a time. Since then we have started a new daycare and my son is thriving, happy, and actually being taken CARE of and i couldn't be happier. it's a shame this had to be our first experience with childcare. There are literally NO words to describe the appreciation I have for Impressionable Years! We enrolled our daughter in their infant program in October. Within a few seconds of meeting her teacher, Ms. Evelyn, we were enamored! Our daughter naturally gravitated towards her and we knew we chose the best center. All of the teachers in the infant program are phenomenal. They are detail-oriented, compassionate and genuine! After a few months with Ms. Evelyn, she was moved up to the next level. The team handled the transition with ease and ensured we were all comfortable. Ms. Regene, Ms. Alexis and Ms. Ivy made the experience magical! Our daughter would literally "run" to the classroom door each morning with the biggest smile on her face and was always greeted with authentic joy and energy! On her 1st birthday, her teacher bought her special party gear and wrote her a heartfelt note! We loved receiving daily pictures of our girl learning and having fun! Courtney is incredible and made us feel like family. She maintained clear and open communication at all times and even navigated an unfortunate Covid situation with grace and creativity! Every staff member we interacted with knew our daughter's name and lit up when she walked in the center each morning. Due to relocation, we had to leave the IY Family but we miss them tremendously! We could not have asked for a more amazing experience for the 1st year of our girl's life! I love this daycare. I have two infants and two school aged kids. Impressionable Years takes care of my children very well. They provide updates throughout the day for my infants (to include pictures), and my school aged kids love their teacher here. They honestly rave about it more than they do their actual school. My son was in attendance for their summer camp as well and they had so many activities! Swimming, field trips, events, presentations... It was a very eventful summer attending this daycare. I highly advise considering this as an option for your littles. I don't regret it! read more

We had Gus here Jan 2010 to Oct 2010 when he was a 3 months old until he was one. We loved it. They were attentive and sweet here. They have an enormous facility with large indoor play areas for teh children and they also have some very fun outdoor play area behind their building. THe staff was always great, informative and attentive. The only thing I didn't like is for naps they would put the babies in their cribs and let them cry for the duration of the "nap time" so there were moments I would come in and a few munchkins were just crying. My son has been attending Impressionable Years for a few months now. He's part of the 2 year old program and my husband and I are absolutely in love with the center and it's employees. His teacher is very patient with him. Since our son was expressively speech delayed we wanted to move him to a place where he would get the necessary help he needed to catch up. In just a couple of months we've seen so much improvement in our son's speech and overall temperament. Everyday we bring him, he runs inside. He's so happy and so are we. I know my son is being cared for very well. He's being educated but also having a lot of fun. The center is huge, has large play areas indoor and outdoor, offer a full fun packed schedule every month, and more! Highly recommend sending your little ones! read more

She was nice enough to say she was willing to work with my budget HOWEVER, she never replied to several emails once we started to discuss pricing. It may be a good place but I will never know. This Center is as good as it gets! I would recommend to all of my friends and family. I had visited almost all of the daycares in the area, (at least 10 of them) before even deciding for my child to attend Impressionable Years. I chose them mostly, because I saw the hands on care that the children were receiving and the center is very family orientated. I could tell my 2yr old really felt joy when she left the center every evening. She matriculated through the program and graduated from the K4 class this spring. At the graduation, I was so surprised to learn she knew places on the map and also how to differentiate between dollars and coins. Our son was able to read and write at a very early age. Now he's fluent in Chinese and will be attending the Key school in Anapolis . Impressionable Years Child Care Center operates under false pretenses. Their assistant director comes and goes as she pleases. Not a single employee is MSDE credentialed as their Excels rating states. The teachers lack proper materials to complete lesson plan activities, their is no hands on managing from the administration. I have had two children in Impressionable Years, my first from 6 months until Kindergarten, and my second from about 4 months until the present (4 years old). We have always been pleased with the staff and the care, and my children have had teachers whose love for the kids was obvious. Once I told a teacher "I am impressed with your patience! I pray for you every day." to which she replied "Pray for my kids too." There is an emphasis on free play, and several extracurricular activities with excellent teachers there too. Overall, I would recommend, and have recommended, Impressionable Years to others. I have one very energetic but sweet 2 year old son that attends Impressionable Years. It will almost be a year since he has been coming here. As all first time parents, we did our research and it was a toss up between Impressionable Years and Children of America and guess where we ended up. We choose this place due to the atmosphere and set up and first impression is always a lasting one. Since my son has been coming here, his letters, numbers and construction of sentences has improved greatly. I defiantly can see the difference. This is the worst place I have ever been to- and as a concerned and active mother I have researched tons of day cares. The people look like they hate there job. The lady in the morning for drop off looked like she wanted to be anywhere but there. She wouldn't respond to you when you said good morning, she was rude to the kids and she just sat there slouching in her chair. Anytime I was there every single person was sitting. There was no one actively playing with the kids or reading books or at least cleaning. Every day at the end of the day they would put a movie on for the kids. I'm sorry but I don't pay you money to throw my kids in front of a tv. Its dark in there and I don't like the open space concept. Its one huge room broken down into 3 or four classrooms or spaces. The director was NEVER there. When I dropped the kids off in the morning she wasn't there. When I picked up in the afternoon at 5pm she was already gone. She would never return phone calls. And several times no one would even answer the phone. The director's mother works there and I have heard stories about her. She even gave me a sly comment that shocked me. If I could sum this up in one word it would be "RUN!" Run as far away from this place as possible. The only reason they are open is because this in not a corporate licensed day care it is independent. So no one is looking over their shoulders, no one is showing them a proper curriculum. I used to be scared of the corporate licensed day cares because I thought they are just commercially run but that couldn't be further from the truth. They are the places you want to be. They have standard, which this place does not, and they have people looking over their shoulders making sure it is run properly. I might be spoiled by Kindercare because they always have a director present- from the beginning of the day to the end of the day. I have only seen them leave early maybe 2 times in the past 2 years- and that is fine with me. Those teachers are NEVER sitting unless they are actively playing with the kids or reading them a book. They are only allowed to maybe show a clip of a movie for holiday purposes. They constantly are cleaning all day long. The food is healthy. So stick with the corporate and franchised day cares because at the end of the day it may be more but who can put a price on PEACE OF MIND.... read more

I wish I can give this place 1/2 a star, because this 1 star is giving them way too much credit. My child went here for 1 week only, and in that 1 week they managed to change my perception of daycare dramatically.... 1st day - they forgot to feed my child lunch. Instead they gave her cheese puffs. 3rd day - they didn't feed my child lunch again, because the microwave was broken this is what Mrs. Mary told my child when didn't give her lunch. When I called the establishment (of course the director Michelle was not there, she barely ever is) the worker their told me they have 5 microwaves and he didn't know why my child's food was not warmed up. 4th day - I personally went to Mrs. Mary and asked her to make sure to warm up my daughters food so she can eat and her response was "why can't you send lunchables like every other parent" I wish I was paraphrasing here! 5th day - They forgot my child at school. And when I called to see why, they blamed the school instead of having a better tracking system where they can call parents to see if the child was picked up. She said it would take too much time to call parents.... Please tell me in which world is making a 2 min phone call to see if a child is safe taking up too much time?? read more

The daycare Owner/Director refused to adhere to the agreement, simply because of a pre-existing relationship with the father and no respect for the law. I have a 2 year old and for that age group they offer no academic enrichment during the summer. The academic time for 12 kids is limited to 15 minutes (circle time). Fortunately, the 2 year old teacher was honest and told me of all the services my child does not receive at this facility, for example no academic enrichment or age appropriate development. I would encourage anyone considering this daycare to pay close attention to the child:teacher ratio, and ask lot of questions about the hours the teachers work, and the amount of time that is dedicated to play. Had considered this place because of convience and possibly because it was good. First impressions: the staff was nice during our first visit, office place was a complete mess. Do not understand how you can be expected to take care of children yet you can not take care of an office space. We were told how great the place is and that they have won all these awards (though the online ratings were not very high as compared to other centers in the area). Needing child care urgently, we went ahead with them as a temporary solution. We asked them to send us paperwork (which they did), and then we wrote them a check for $620.00. While were in the process of filling out paperwork and still deciding over the next few days (we had to get the doctor to fill out some paperwork), we were told by Impressionable years that our spot was suddenly not available because a couple that was taking their child out suddenly changed their mind, and that since "my wife had voiced concerns over dietary restrictions over our daughter being there" that they just went ahead and gave the spot back to the previous couple. At this time we spoke to them about NOT cashing our check and that we would pick it up. We look in out account later and find out that they had cashed our check! I called and asked about this, and was told they put all checks in a locked drop box for financial dept. to handle (the other staff does not have access to this drop box. They said they would refund us with a check, when I went I asked how the heck did they cash a check without authorization, they said there was a communication breakdown between admin and the financial department. I was pissed off and told her how that can be construed as stealing. All I got was how they "remedied" the situation by writing me a check. I told them that had my wife not seen it in her account, you guys would have just taken the money without thinking! The lady I spoke to just did not seem concerned in the least. As a side note, the office was still a complete mess, it had been nearly 2 weeks up to this point. The reasong for the two stars is because I dont think they were trying to steal, but the utte r lack of competence in matters of management make me wonder what kind of lessons they teach the kids, god willing an emergency happen and they do not kow what to do, I was told by them, at the first visit, that their solution to an emergency is just call 911, there has to be more then that, you need to also handle and give first aid. It just was not vry clear. I am sorry to parents who have sent their kids here, maybe your experience is better, but as of this writing, I believe them to be somewhat incompetent. How on earth do you cash a check knowing you are not supposed to and then act like its not a big deal because they gave the money back, Impressionable years please act like it is a big deal, BECAUSE IT IS! As a first time mom I was VERY picky about where my son will be spending most of his day. I checked out at least 10 other day cares and was not happy with any of them, nothing was perfect. I wanted clean facility, warm and cozy infant room, big indoor area and play yard with high secure fence that faces woods, not roads, and of course, the teachers, are the most important. I am very happy with facility and my child's teachers. The director is very nice, teachers are are nice and caring, just hope that everybody is sincere.. read more

I signed my son into their program when he was 18 months old. I kept him in there until he was ready for Kindergarten. Any time I had any concerns, the director was always available to resolve any issues. My son was well prepared for school from their program. My only wish is that they would have focused a little more on reading. I would definitely suggest this as a daycare, and I have many times before. read more

My kids have been here for over 6 years. The director has worked with me many times to ensure my kids were getting the care they need. Ms. Rita treats my boys like her own and they love her! My daughter has been at IY for 7 months and we absolutely love it. She is 3 years old and has thrived and grown soo much in the short amount of time she has been at IY. The teacher's have weekly curriculum that is followed, and homework is sent home every Friday for parents to review what was taught at school. There is always an open dialogue with the parents and teachers. The owner is readily available and always responsive to email. If I have had any concerns it is taken seriously and addressed. The school has special themes through out the season, activities are planned around holidays, seasons, guests. Furthermore the school has sports, dance, music during the school year. My son went there for almost 6 months first in the after care program then in Summer camp. I only have good things to say about this daycare. This is a family daycare not a corporation and you can feel it. I personally do not like corporation daycares which are often ruled by ridiculous regulations. At Impressionable Years, the owner Michelle is very personable and the stuff is great and very caring! My 6 years old son is a very active child, I know some day cares may not have accepted him but Impressionable Years had no issue having him and he thrived there, he had many friends. We have to leave the area and my son and I will both be sad about leaving Impressionable Years, I think that is the main thing we'll miss here. read more
