I happened to be in Kensington again (a place I love but don't go to as often as I once did) and I stumbled back into Fresh Baked Goods. No, not a cookie shop, but a funky store packed with knitwear and unique and cute clothing and hand made jewelry. As I browsed the tiny shop, that old nostalgia started creeping in. I even saw a DVD for learning how to knit and I was inspired again! This store was founded about 10 years ago by a knitter who made sweaters and all things knit-able. They once had a knitting bee (class) in the shop but have since removed that part of Fresh Baked Goods, and now just do the selling. Fresh Baked Goods is actually a clothing label (from the founder of the store) and all of her creations are sold there (and their sister store on Queen St). Fresh Baked Goods also sells many other hand made knit ware and designs by over 30 local creators. The prices are not cheap, but they often have items for sale, and if this kind of clothing or craft is your thing, you'll love this store! I haven't knitted anything in years, but just walking into Fresh Baked Goods has inspired me to pick up my sticks again and start working on that scarf I left unattended years before. FBG is definitely not just a store, but a collective of a unique subculture that is no longer something just for your grandma. Think dress shoes, dress shirts, ladies shoes, shirts, and accessories. When I walked into the store, the salesman approached me noticing that I was attempting to match my suit jacket to appropriate shoes. We proceeded to walk through a number of different options and chose a number to try. J&M service has the nice touch of having their salespeople hands-on fit you with the shoes when trying them on. Though to be honest, even though I appreciated this, I eventually asked to just try them on myself. Too much good treatment and my bougie meter would explode. I quite like the style of their shoes in general, and even better, most of them are surprisingly comfortable. At the time, they had a sale going on, which made their shoes even more accessible, but even without the sale, I must say that J&M's value to price point ratio is pretty high. Take walk to most of the surrounding stores and you'll be hard pressed to find shoes of the same style & quality at the same price. I have to admit that their quality is a step up from the usual Nine West or Bay offerings. They're actually well made and have some good thoughts on the science behind them. They have 2 big claims which I like for Canada... one of them being waterproof leather (hellloooo winter slush) and the other being breathable (oh yes summer humidity, I didnt forget about you). Another nice thing, you're actually buying real leather... none of this fake leather you'd find everywhere else. For me, I've had 3 of boots from here and personally, they have worn beautifully year over year. That's right... I've had them for a few years each and the leather still looks great even with winter wear. I do maintain them but I've never had the soles wear through, have leather peel or crack, or any stitching become undone. I find these are definitely suitable for Canadian winters. That being said... these boots are also my most pragmatic. They're not cute or sexy... they're solid and reasonable shoes. You know the ones that a parent might wear. So the heels are not stilettos ever, colours are not crazy, not tassels or sequins... like I said, reasonable. I would love to buy shoes here cause they're comfy but I would feel like my mom in the styles. As for the price point, ok... this is wear you might pause and go "$350 for boots?" But here's the thing... if I got to Aldo or Nine West, I'm buying $180 boots for fake leather that will only last maybe 2 years. I buy the Geox ones on sale for 20% off at $280 and they last 4+ years and still look good. So Im saving money in the long run, I stay dry, and I'm not freezing either. As for service, it can be touch and go here... it really depends on what day you head in. I've been ignored completely and then other times, I'm rolled out the red carpet. It really depends on who is working here. That being said, I've never had an issue of asking for a size and them being helpful. You never know here. So if youre looking to have the latest family forward European styles... Geox got you covered on all fronts. With that being said, having the chargers is the only thing that made me continue waiting for 10 plus minutes. I didn't find any flats that I liked but I love Geox heels when I'm in the market for them. Geox shoes are really comfortable and they have patented technology to keep your feet cool and sweat free. Another pair of grayish pants caught my eye. It was made of a velvety smooth fabric but was light as a feather. I ended up purchasing all 3 items. Doctor Dopey came across 2 shirts that resembled a linen-like texture. Both were military style shirts though one was casual while the other was dressier. The tab came to $570 - but considering we got it tailored, and considering the high quality fabric Osafo uses - and considering the uniqueness of his pieces - I thought it was money well-spent! I would rather blow $570 supporting a local designer than at Holt Renfrew. Osafo, the designer/owner is really down to earth. We bartered and got the price knocked down from the original and he even tailored our clothes for us free of charge. He only makes 14 of every item in stock. Stephen definitely has an eye for style as all his pieces are crafted with care. He uses only the best fabrics and knows how to make fitted clothes. I will definitely be back!
