Independent Bank and its division/subsidiary/affiliate, Independent Dealer Services, which offers consumers auto loans at least as far as here in Texas, are both (if they are, indeed, distinct legal entities) textbook examples of pathetic, inexcusable, "don't give a damn about our customers" customer service.
I WOULD DISCOURAGE EVERYONE FROM FINANCING ANY AUTO PURCHASE THROUGH INDEPENDENT BANK OR INDEPENDENT DEALER SERVICES.
I purchased a vehicle from a Hyundai dealership in Longview, Texas September 26, 2013. The dealership offered several financing options. "Independent Dealer Services" (which, after a SUBSTANTIAL amount of digging I discovered is ostensibly Independent Bank) was one of those financing options. Having a marginally less finance rate, I elected to finance the purchase of the vehicle through "Independent Dealer Services" since I could make more leaving cash in my accounts and financing the car through them. The ONLY thing on the finance paperwork was the name "Independent Dealer Services" and an address in Memphis, Tennessee. No telephone number, no website address, no "loan payments should be sent here" notation. There was also nothing disclosing that "Independent Dealer Services" is, in fact, Independent Banks. The dealership finance manager and the paperwork indicated the due date for the first payment on the loan was November 10, 2013. I think it is exceedingly reasonable for a purchaser who borrowed almost $40,0000 from a bank to anticipate communication of some sort from the lender would be received.
October 2013 came and went. Yes, as you probably guessed, no communication of any kind from the lender. No "Thanks for financing your purchase with us" letter, no coupon book, no "Your first payment is coming due, your payment must be sent here" letter, no "Hey buddy, don't screw up and default on this loan or we'll break your legs" letter.....no nothing. Nothing was received from Independent Bank or its alias, Independent Dealer Services. Nothing!
So by November 5th, I was getting concerned. I called the dealership and they could not give me any information how to contact "Independent Dealer Services" other than the address on the finance paperwork. So, I tried Google. The Google search takes one a lot of places, but not to "Independent Dealer Services" a.k.a. Independent Bank. Such undetectability brings one of two possible conclusions - 1) either complete blithering idiots run Independent Bank, or 2) such obfuscation and obscurity is quite intentional and by design. I won't belabor this with multiple reasons why, but my choice is the latter.
I was finally able through many telephone calls to discern that Independent Dealer Services was merely a front for Independent Bank. The discovery, unfortunately, brought no help in finding to whom, what or where I needed to send my note payment. I was finally able to obtain a loan/note number. Beyond that, the personnel I spoke with were discourteous beyond description. I asked if I was ever to get any kind of coupon book? The response, "We'll see what we can send you". The woman then told me to send a check to an address and put the loan/note number on the check.
Today, December 9th, recognizing that a month had transpired since I spoke with the bank and still nothing had been received from them and my loan/note payment was due tomorrow, I spent over an hour (once again) trying to find out if I could, and if so, how to make a payment online. Not an easy task. I found out that a borrower could make a payment......BUT THE BORROWER HAS TO PAY A FEE TO MAKE A LOAN/NOTE PAYMENT TO THE VERY BANK THAT LENT THE FUNDS AND WHO IS RECEIVING THE PAYMENT. Now you tell me, is that crap or what?
I called the bank and some jerk vice president confirmed that they charge their customers to make payments online. To those who don't know, paying online completely eliminates the cost of personnel a bank has to pay to handle a physical check, input the data, post the check, confirm the data input and confirm the payment and handle disposition of the physical check.....it is all done electronically. What a load of BS and a major rip off. The jerk vice president and the woman I spoke with were the most discourteous, unfriendly, worthless individuals I have recently had the misfortune to speak with.
Bottom line, I would STRONGLY encourage all consumers to steer far away from entering into any borrowing arrangements with the jerks of Independent Bank and its front Independent Dealer Services. They are a train wreck waiting to happen. What jerks!!!!!
