What a wonderful experience! How can you go wrong watching Shakespeare in Griffin park on a summer night! Truly an impressive performance that played out for three hours! Given it's free, one should definitely donate! If attending, here some things to note: 1.Come early to snag a good parking spot. You still have to walk up hill from parking. 2.Bring a flashlight or phone for walking back to car as dark walking back to car 3. Bring a picnic. Note: no alcohol allowed. 4. Snag a spot early to get best view. Ground a bit rough so you might want to opt for a chair. Chair seating only in back! Enjoy!

Love this theater and have been going to their free Shakespeare in the Park since moving to LA in 2011. I was never into Shakespeare in the past mainly because I didn't understand it but Indy Shakes does an excellent job of making their productions current, relatable and like you don't need a masters in English or Theater in order to enjoy or understand. Every production I've been to has been both fun and interesting...and they just keep getting better and better. The free park productions make a great date night or just great night in general. Bring a blanket and a picnic and have one of the best experiences LA has to offer. They also have productions during the winter at their Studio in Atwater. This year they'll be showing A Christmas Carol and also Dr Pinch. Dr Pinch is naughty and racy but it's fun. Seriously if you're looking for a fun night consider catching them in the park or in studio...you won't be disappointed.

Amazing! I've always heard of Shakespeare in the Park, so when my friend texted saying she had extra tickets, we jumped on the opportunity! There was a little bit of traffic through Griffith Park, but once we entered the parking lot, the parking was easy. It was definitely a bit of a walk to the dell where the makeshift stage was set, especially with our chairs, tables, and blankets - wear your walking shoes! We worked up a little bit of a sweat to get to our spot (all the way around to the back hill), but it was definitely worth it! We set up our chairs high on the hill in the chair zone. It was a little tough getting situated on a steep incline but we made it work. The production was super fun and I loved the joy and energy that each of the actors brought. I thought the 360 stage and the interactions with the audience made it such a fun & unique experience. Some quick tips: - get there early to stake out a good spot - wear some walking shoes & something comfy - a cushion or chair helps a ton - it's a long show - we were there for 3.5 hours. - a flashlight for the walk back comes in handy - bring bug spray - bring cash for for the donation bucket! TLDR; Shakespeare in the Park by Independent Shakespeare is a wonderful LA activity and of course FREE! Definitely recommend.

Some say the best things in life are free. While this may be true Donations Never Hurt. As You Like It , was a free performance. Located at the old LA Zoo in beautiful Griffith Park. The cast greeted and guilted you in full character, which was quite fun and entertaining. The atmosphere was perfect and the performances were great. A perfect evening for those who work hard, but knows how to relax.

Amazingly fun summertime activity in the park! Free set up in the Old Griffith Park Zoo. Get there early to scope out a spot (though they are moving to a different stage soon) and pack lots of blankets as it gets cold. Most people bring a picnic but there are small vendors selling snacks and drinks. The showtime is a bit long (2-3) hours but the acting is amazing and is a fun activity with family, friends, or significant others!

Love the colorful costumes and the diversity of the cast!

Coming to see one of their yearly plays is practically summer in a bottle. I can't think of anything better than sitting on the grass with a bottle of wine and w picnic surrounded by families and folks in a date being regaled with lively interpretations of Shakespeare. This year the Two Gentlemen of Verona features a live band on stage playing 50s standards. A wonderful way to spend an evening! Arrive at least 15 minutes before show time so you can park and find a place to park your low chairs. Place: Griffith Park Old Zoo (come early and check out the old bear caves) Time: show start at 7, but get there a little earlier to nab a spot Parking: free! For sale: cute tshirts, sweatshirts (good if you are cold), popcorn, brownies, coffee To Bring: a donation!, blanket, low chairs, wine:), a picnic, a sweater

    Awesome production of Richard III
    Peijean T.

I've always loved watching top notch Shakespeare at The Old Globe in San Diego, so I was skeptical about a free performance in Los Angeles' Griffith Park. I was very impressed with this past weekend's performance of Richard III by the Independent Shakespeare Company at The Old Zoo within Griffith Park. Lavish costumes, professional lighting and a full stage, and great actors, the quality of the production was excellent! Not only did they stay true to the Bard, but the actors really captured the essence of the play's characters and the playfulness of Shakespeare's language. They even performed it in a way that made it accessible to people who aren't English literary scholars so that everyone could enjoy it. Starting next weekend, they will be doing The Tempest to complete their summer Shakespeare plays. I'm really looking forward to coming back. Here are some tips: 1) Arrive early for a good spot on the lawn: 30-60 minutes prior to the 7PM showtime. But don't despair if you're late as there were still many good spots even at 7PM. The setup is on a hill so if you're in the back you still get a good view of the stage 2) Bring cash as they sell concessions (Bard-shaped cookies, non-alcoholic drinks, Maruchan Cup Noodles) and also to leave a bit in the donation buckets. They encourage $10 per adult and $5 per child but it's not mandatory. After watching a quality show though, you'll want to support them with a voluntary donation so they can continue to put on these shows for free! 3) To locate the show, use the coordinates given on their website, as using GPS on the Old Zoo address will not work! Once you follow the directions using the coordinates, follow the many signs directing you up through Griffith Park. 4) Lots of parking in set parking lots adjacent to the staged area. 5) Bring a blanket and picnic like you're at the Hollywood Bowl, except don't bring alcohol as it's banned at county parks. The best part of our experience was packing going to Trader Joe's beforehand to scoop up fruit, snacks and kombucha to enjoy as the sun set and the show began. 6) Bring DEET bug repellant and spray around the perimeter of your picnic blanket. We couldn't believe hbefow many ants were immediately crawling all over our blanket...and we saw a massive trail form on another party's blanket in front of us because they had brought all this food and didn't pay attention to the pests.

    Bring food!

Awesome! Saw Twelfth Night and it was perfect. Started a bit late at 7:20 -so dont worry when you get lost, there's that time cushion. The acting was great (no amateur here like I was expecting) and they added in a lot of cute little modern-day quips. Sound was crisp and very clear! Arrive early to get a good spot. Crowd was a variety of people - teens, families, couples, and seniors. - read/be familiar with the story before you go! - bring some cash for donations to support the cast (its free for you to watch the 2hr production, open your heart and give a few bucks) - bring blankets or chairs to sit on, it might get chilly too - some people brought their dogs (allowed/not allowed?) - LOCATION: on the zoo and merry-go-round side of Griffith park, follow the road as if your going to the merry-go-round, pass it, and go through Lot1 up to Lot2 to park. Then follow the trail that heads towards left and up the hill.

    A Midsummer Night's Dream

I sometimes wonder what Shakespeare would think of the modern world if he came back to life? What would he think of technology? Of current world politics? Most importantly, what would he think of his own work's success and impact? Okay, perhaps this isn't something everyone thinks about while munching on their morning oatmeal but it has crossed my mind. I am certain about ONE thing: I would take Shakespeare to Griffith Park to view a production by the Independent Shakespeare Company. The Independent Shakespeare Company is a rapidly-expanding non-profit theatrical group which strives to bring both Shakespeare and theatre to the masses of Los Angeles... for FREE!!! That's right. Although productions, costumes, rehearsals, etc all cost several greenbacks; the ISC doesn't forward the cost to the theatre-lovers and instead opts to function on donations and fundraisers. That, in itself, deserves a round of applause. I ventured to the Old Zoo at Griffith Park for my first experience with the ISC to watch "A Midsummer Night's Dream" (modernized slightly by the acting troop). The setting is amazing located on the grassy knoll at the Old Zoo with a large ampitheatre-like stage and spotlights. Shakespeare lovers gather on picnic blankets, lawn chairs, director's chairs, pillows, or whatever your bum prefers; while the sun begins to set behind you (it isn't a coincidence that the stage is set-up on the East versus West. No sun in your eyes!). Want to make a date out of it? Feel free to bring food, snacks, wine, champagne, or purchase some $2 coffee (benefits go to the ISC). Adding to the amazing ambiance were the crickets chirping and the lovely chorus of owls which began to hoot. I heard about 4 at once (two different species -- I know my owls!) and due to my obsession with owls was momentarily distracted from the play. The stars also provide a romantic escape to gaze up at during intermission. The play itself was well produced with terrific art direction. The actors are clearly talented and passionate about their art form. Some projected their voices better than others (they basically yell because their is only a minor sound system) but generally, there is no problem with hearing them speak. I was slightly bored with the specific production of A Midsummer Night's Dream and have seen better adaptations but I wouldn't fault the ISC and would return next summer to see them perform again. A clever sidenote: when intermission was being announced, the actors naturally flowed this into the play talking about where to find them on "fairybook" (facebook) and where to purchase merchandise. It was a refreshing concept. The attendees were amply annoying with obnoxious children who were clearly dragged against their wills to attend, people who didn't pay attention to the announcement about no flash photography, and those who step on your blanket without apologizing. However, this can be expected at a free park event. If Shakespeare was alive today in Los Angeles, he may be shocked at the modern world. However, he would certainly be proud to know he has contributed to free, outdoor, cultural gatherings.

Expect to have actors in the audience!

Seeing a play in Griffith Park is summer in its purest essence. This company, run by a wife and husband team, is celebrating its 15 year anniversary. If you haven't been, you are missing out on one of LA's best events. We saw their production of Titus Andronicus, Shakespeare's first and bloodiest play. It was a bold choice for ISC and they clearly had fun putting it on. With the copious amount of blood (they actually had to mop the stage at intermission) and severed limbs (two heads and a hand play prominent roles), it is not for the faint of heart. They are masters of audience involvement, starting off by circulating in the audience and getting people to vote for the new emperor of Rome. ISC always manages to make the plays understandable and relatable. And somehow, the company finds ways to find bits of humor in even the darkest plays. Productions are technically free, but they pay their actors and give them benefits, so make sure to drop some money in their buckets at the end of the play.

Stage for "She Stoops to Conquer"

(Attended 06/27/13 TH @ 7:00pm): The howling wasn't only coming from the pleased audience! Born and bred in the City of Angels my entire life and I happily stumbled upon another free gem of entertainment that has been going on for years - Independent Shakespeare Co's "Griffith Park Free Shakespeare Festival." Again, how did I now know about this!? And thanks to Goldstar, I purchased their exclusive "reserved front section" ticket ($4.50) which got you front row seating and a lawn blanket (please return after the show). I felt so special! On this warm night, the evening's performance was the opening night of Oliver Goldsmith's, "She Stoops to Conquer" or "The Mistakes of the Night". I'd personally never heard of this before but when I read the synopsis of a whimsical romantic comedy, I was game. With my snacks and a blanket I brought myself in-hand, I made the hike to the site, laid claim to my homestead and waited for the performance to begin (they ran about 30 minutes behind schedule). I took the time to chat with those around me and people-watched as I loved to do. Finally the play began, and here was a picture of the stage. http://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=PtAi6mSoM_VCuKt8g_IQxQ&userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw The quick plot was the potential arranged marriage between two youngsters from wealthy families and all the shenanigans that occurred. The quick subplot was a hidden romance between two other youngsters and all the crookery and lies that needed to happen in order for their relationship to have a fruitful happy ending. The performers appeared to be mostly a young and vibrant bunch - there were some older actors/actresses - or maybe it was simply the natural exuberance of the play. Not withstood, the enthusiasm was infectious and I fed off of that (and I believed the crowd did, too). One of the lead characters - the trouble-making Tony Lumpkin, played by Andre Martin, was hilarious and I swore even he had to stop himself from laughing. David Melville, in the role of the one-part confident aristocrat and one-part lovelorn stuttering bumbling idiot, Charles Marlow, was a riot to watch but couldn't help but wanted to slap the back of his head as to snap him out of his tongue-tied self. I enjoyed Julia Aks' role as the seemingly clueless hands-in-pocket house servant Pimple, that reminded me of Shelley Duvall's role as Olive Oil in the early-80's "Popeye" movie. Service - Once you got the hang of all the various bright pink hand-made directional signs that guided you where to park and the stage, it was pretty effortless from there. When you reached the stage, there were a couple Goldstar representatives that greeted you with a "welcome", a program ("please return so they could be re-used for the next shows"), and a blanket if you reserved through their service. Parking - There are plenty of spots among several interconnected lots and it's all free. But be warned...regardless of which lot you parked in, expect a walk on both leveled and unleveled surfaces, but I thought of it as an adventure as I forged ahead to the stage site. Atmosphere, décor, ambience - You're in the old zoo section of Griffith Park on a cleared grassy glen spot of land with trees in the proximal area, so of course you're outdoors completely exposed to the elements. After all, you're in a park. In addition to the possible flies and gnats that buzzed in your face and around your ears, you may be fortunate enough to at least hear the coyotes in the distance (I did!) or some other wilderness animal. It's all part of the surroundings. There was ample lighting for the staging area but they could've used more on your trek back to your cars as you needed to make sure where you were stepping. And of course, no TVs anywhere. Attire - It was totally casual so I would be in a t-shirt, boardshorts, and flip-flops. Overall, how could I not have loved the Independent Shakespeare Co., for the mere fact of free outdoor entertainment in a beautiful park. Honestly, the acting could've been crappy (which it absolutely wasn't) and I still would've enjoyed myself. Living in Los Angeles is expensive, so I'd take advantage of any opportunities like this. I'd wished I knew about it sooner. I found complete value based on the prices, service, and experience noted above (total bill was around $9.50 which included my contribution to the donation buckets at the end of the show), but truthfully, the show is free (just walk up) and you're not pressured to donation. But don't be a cheapskate and give at least a couple bucks. Although snacks (e.g. cupcakes, kettle korn) were available for cash only, I paid for my Goldstar ticket with my credit card of choice...AMEX!

Can you say awesome? Do you want to have a good outdoorsy experience ala The Hollywood Bowl, but for free? Then you must check out the "Shakespeare in the Park" plays currently taking up residence in the Old Zoo at Griffith Park. The hubby and I saw the last night of OTHELLO there the other night and we had a great time. We packed a picnic lunch, some blankets (make sure to take warm clothes and blankets cuz it does get cold even in the summer) and some beach chairs and headed to Griffith on a Sunday night. There were a lot of people in attendance but it wasn't overly crowded which was nice. It was more an intimate scene than the Hollywood Bowl. We didn't come as early as we would have liked but still got great seats under a nice big tree. The ambiance for sure was awesome - I mean what can beat having a nice spot on a hill under the stars? The play and the acting was also amazing despite me not always knowing what the heck they were saying. Overall, if you like Shakespeare, plays, the outdoors, picnics, eating and having fun, you will enjoy these plays. Up next, MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING for the month of August. I can't wait to go back.

Bring a delicious picnic, blankets, warm jackets and your friends and get cozy for an evening of theatrical magic under the stars! We have been coming to free Shakespeare in Griffith park for the past 3 summers and just love it! Where else can you get great free entertainment? The theater company also is housed in a permanent building where they have performances all year round! This company is entirely run by donations, so even though it is free, you are encouraged to donate! After the performance you have the opportunity to meet the players on and off stage and place a donation in their buckets. There are usually a couple of people with card wipers on their iphones, but bring some cash! There are several bathrooms located to the left and behind the stage. Be careful of wasps before sundown! They love pork chops apparently. Blankets and super low beach chairs are encouraged!

    Shakespear cookies!! :)

This is the place…read more I found Berg through the recommendation of my manager. From my first audit I knew that this place and Berg in particular are different. I had fallen out of love with the craft and needed a place to light a fire in me, and Berg did that. Adrian, who organizes the audit and runs the boot camp, is one of the smartest people you will meet. His way of teaching the studio's technique is really approachable and direct. (He's East Coast, so he talks like he's got somewhere to be, but just the freakin' sweetest.) The Berg. Where do you start? What a larger than life character. Berg's capacity to teach great acting comes from his ability as a great actor. So many LA teachers don't know anything about acting, so how the hell do they teach it? His meticulous hunger for creativity never ceases to amaze me. His passion for the craft is stunning. His notes are always insightful, constructive, succinct... and usually funny. Here are a few key points for me: - I have never received a line reading at Berg Studios. - I have been consistently encouraged to be myself, unlike some studios. - The focus is on the work, not just the result. - Berg actually cares... like a lot. - He sometimes brings his dog and let's be honest. That's all we want. Dogs. Do the audit. See if exploring creativity and freedom through technique structure are right for you. It is for me!

4 out of 5: Decent Audit, But Be Cautious…read more I audited a class at Berg Studios and thought it was okay overall. The instructor seems to know his craft and there are definitely some solid basics you can take away. That said, the class leaned pretty heavily into the sales pitch, which is always a bit of a red flag for me. It felt more like a "get in, get what you need, get out" kind of place. If you're curious, it's worth checking out for the fundamentals, but I wouldn't recommend getting too comfortable. Like many LA acting classes, there's a risk of getting stuck in a cycle that isn't always about growth. Take what serves you and move on.

I have been to the LA Philharmonic Walt Disney Concert Hall several times to see/hear different genres of music from ballet, to symphony, to jazz, and of course classical music, and during the holidays they give a great performance by their choir. Those of you who know me, know I love classical music and do have my favorite composers: Chopin, Vivaldi and Mozart. Our seats were very comfortable and you can see the stage from any corner/angle since the theatre is not that big. Also has balcony seating. Tickets were $50 a piece not including tax. It has a beautiful gift shop, garden, different restaurants all around the building, and a small store where you can purchase some beverages and snacks. Overall, a GREAT performance and we both had a lovely time. Parking is $10 with few an entrances and few restrooms for both men & women. Thank you all for another AWESOME performance!! Will definitely return again next time I get a brochure or pamphlet in my mail.

The performance was even more amazing than we had imagined & so lively! Music | The LA Phil was incredible! The sounds of the different instruments, made a beautiful melody! The soft, beautiful, magical, fairytale-like sounds, as if butterflies are fluttering about were my favorite! I especially love the sound of the flutes! It was also incredible hearing the powerful, booming sounds, as the musicians played fiercely! It really stirred up excitement inside & made my heart race at times! Performance | Elim Chan & Masabane Rangwahasha | 100% fabulous! They were both incredible! It was amazing seeing a female conductor lead with so much passion, grace, as well as excitement! It's as if she was doing a beautiful yet powerful dance! Hearing the beautiful voice and talent radiating from Masabane, as she sang opera was mesmerizing! She stood confident, poised & proud and was a sight to be seen and heard! Walt Disney Concert Hall | Magical! I loved all of the curves and shapes of the building, both inside and outside, as well as the majestic shades and colors throughout! Drinks & Bites | I was excited to see refreshments, as I know, we were going to eat afterwards, but a light bite was perfect! I enjoyed a few bites of my chocolate brownie & my friend and I had a glass of red wine! Our bartender was awesome! I believe he was located on the fourth floor, personality plus, thanks again! Also, eating is only allowed in the lobby areas! Intermission | 15-20 Minutes! Overall | I'm super excited to return for future performances at the Walt Disney Concert Hall, as it truly was a magical experience!

They spend their days talking chit about the crabs that got out, the ones who couldn't take it, and the losers who still live among them. When a new crab arrives filled with hope and change, they are faced with who they once were and their incessant dream of getting the shuck out." Clever little story where knowing a little Spanish and even Yiddish enhances the word play. Crab costumes are whimsical. Go soon since it closes mid August 2023.  The Atwater Village Theater is a multiplex with 3 small 99 seat or less nonequity theatres. Since many people did not want the front seats we had ring side seats to get up close to the actors. The seats seem well banked so there should be no line of sight problems unless you're seated behind Madge Simpson. Purchase refreshments at the reception counter although we didn't take advantage since we ate before at down home El Ruby Mexican about 6 car minutes away. Also we went on a Monday night which was discounted to sweeten the deal.  Small parking lot is available just to the right of the theatre as well as a large parking space to the right of nearby Momed restaurant. Street parking is limited.  Fun weekday night out for in person story telling entertainment. 4 stars.

There were a few funny moments early on but it gets extremely serious. One measure of a show's success is the conversation it sparks afterward. Too bad ours was more of a "What the hell was that? Oh well." conversation.

I wasn't looking forward to this because I was exhausted,, but hubby bought tickets and it was a great and lively evening listening to Western Standard Time Ska. Their front act was a great start. My apologies to them - I don't recall their name, but will revise this post when I find out. I love the water jug and cups readily available. Go, go, go!

Now, this area is pretty cool all around because they have random stores, bars, grocery stores and restaurants nearby. Parking can be a bitch, but that's life telling you to get to your event a little early. After 9pm, I believe it's FREE. When I saw POPPY perform here years ago right after COVID, it was my first concert here and this place is dope because you're literally so damn close to the artist(s) you watch because the stage isn't too high. The acoustics, bass and all around sound here is NICE for a small, intimate venue. ALL of the workers I've met/interacted with were all so damn nice and helpful as much as they can. This place also has a nice restaurant inside from what I've seen and NEED to check out in the future. I was blessed to even hang out at their Green Room for a gig and it's just so damn cool to know that Dave Chappelle and others have been inside the same room before and after shows!
