I went to India Star after reading a fellow yelper's 5 star review. I had been to this location many years ago and had a horrible experience(flavorless food, suspicious sanitary conditions etc.) So when I read Jaime T.'s review, I was curious. I figured I would go for the buffet and see if it had improved or maybe it was under new ownership. Boy was I glad I did! As soon as I entered the restaurant, I could tell that it was upgraded. The decor is much nicer than my previous visit and the food smelled delicious. The drab buffet looked full and vibrant with aromatic, colorful, fresh looking food. The server was extremely friendly and seated us at the table. The buffet comes with a choice of garlic or plain naan. We opted for the garlic one. The buffet had 2 rice dishes, aloo tikki as appetizer, 3-4 vegetarian curries, 2 chicken dishes(makhani and curry,) tandoori chicken, rice pudding and gulab jamun for dessert, along with the usual accompaniments to Indian foods such as pickles, chutneys and raita. It also comes with Chai. I tried everything and it was the best Indian buffet in the Buffalo area. The only thing I didnt enjoy was the tandoori chicken as it was dry, but my favorites were chicken makhani and vegetable curry. Both had a nice spice level to it, unlike the watered down versions at other Indian buffets. The garlic naan was fresh and soft with hits of pungent garlic. When you walk in hearing Hindi being spoken by a group of Indians eating, you know the foods going to be good. The decor is what you expect (and hope for) at an authentic Indian restaurant and the music is authentic as well. I over ordered since I only had a $20 (total was $27) and tried to take something off the order but the guy said he would make it all anyways. Ordered delivery through skip the dishes on a very snowy evening. We ordered a paneer dish and a chicken dish, as well as garlic naan and paneer pakora. The order comes with a container of rice meant for both entrees. We ordered the entree dishes with medium spice and they definitely were spicier than most other restaurants we have tried. The food was very good. Our only complaints were that we did not get any of the yogurt sauce that typically comes on the side, or the rice pudding that is usually included. I so wanted to love this more. I love supporting the local Indian restaurants in Buffalo and I decided to try something other than the place we normally go. The menu is extensive and ordering it through DoorDash I was able to choose spicy level which is much appreciated. I ordered the paneer makhani and unfortunately it was average at best. You can get much better in the area. I ordered my son chicken biryani and it was an absolutely huge portion. He enjoyed it but again it wasn't his favorite. I also got a side order of samosas and they were very tasty. I was torn between three and four stars but I think that this is not even one of my top five Indian restaurants in Buffalo. Some of our favorite dishes include: butter chicken (rich in flavor), chicken tikka masala (spicy and includes cut up veggies), garlic naan (we never order enough of this for family meals as everyone loves it), chicken vindaloo (just yum), and sarson ka saag (like a creamed spinach but lighter and full of flavor). They have options for levels of spiciness so everyone in the family can enjoy the meal. Please order take out from this restaraunt or go visit and enjoy absolutely wonderful cooking! read more

It is a sad, sad day for Indian food lovers in WNY. On 2/8 I arrived to find a few modifications made - different greeter, different serving dishes, a cooler missing, a table moved, no chai out, DIFFERENT looking food - but everything else was the same right down to the knickknacks, tablecloths and posters. I was extra confused once I tasted my dishes - I asked the waiter if the owners were on vacation. He informed me that they had SOLD the place only two weeks ago, virtually lock, stock and barrel - he had no idea why. I was sad immediately - the regular hostess was always so nice and after 5+ years of patronage we had developed a great rapport (and she always knew what kind of naan I wanted!). It has the same name and looks virtually the same inside. But don't be fooled. After tasting the food, I'm guessing I may not bother to go back. Some of the dishes were solid standard fair for virtually any Indian restaurant in this area, but mostly they had a heavy handed approach to flavoring, not the delicate complexity of spicy I'm used to from Star, and clear over-use of oil/ghee (or cheap oil/ghee). Or maybe just cheap oil/ghee as overall the ingredients seemed to taste cheaper. It was greasy and gave me mild indigestion - two cardinal sins Star has never committed before. I can't express how disappointed I am. I loved the old owners - nice people who served fantastic food. I would go here again if i was in the immediate vicinity - it wasn't terrible and is still just as cheap. But it is a huge step down from the previous cuisine. Not overwhelming nor underwhelming. First time eating authentic Indian food and we were satisfied. Ordered chicken tandoori (pretty good) and chicken vindaloo( little chicken a lot of sauce). We went to Star of India per a recommendation from a friend. They "warned" us that it will be empty, but that we won't be disappointed. This was surely the case! We ordered a bottle of wine (a little on the pricey side, but that's to be expected for a smaller restaurant) and a slew of appetizers. The Cheese Pakora was light and fresh, fried to perfection. The Meat Samosa was awesome as well, and the appetizers were very filling! Since we were the only patrons there, the owner/waitress offered us complimentary lentil soup - a very nice touch. The soup was lemony and perfectly spiced. For our entrees we ordered Chicken Tikka Masala and the Shahi Paneer and both were excellent. There was enough food and rice to take home for almost two more meals! We will definitely be coming again - hopefully for the dinner buffet. read more

Not completely horrible, but nothing to scream about either. I visited this place with a co-worker because it's close enough to work for us to grab some take-out during our lunch hour. The tandoori chicken that she ordered came as pieces of drumsticks only, which didn't really taste like what you'd expect from tandoori chicken. My curry didn't taste bad, but it was practically watered down soup with small chunks of meat. My second try of this place only confirmed my first impression. I have found much better places to go to since, like Taste of India and Kebab & Curry. They're not close to work, but they're more than worth the price. read more

I'll start off right away saying the two stars are exactly what Yelp describes it as "Meh. I've experienced better." The Star of India was by no means bad, it just wasn't really anything great either. I would probably put it at three stars for quality of food but the buffet is where they lose that other star. I took someone here on a Tuesday (the buffet day) who hadn't had Indian food before. I thought "Hey the buffet will be a great idea for them to try all sorts of different stuff". Lo and behold the buffet had about 5 dishes, no curry, and no beef or lamb. The Chicken Mahkani was included in the buffet and it was the best dish there in my opinion. There was also another chicken dish, Tandoori chicken, and some other vegetable options but I don't remember the names. The chicken was a bit dry in all the dishes but the seasoning was good and I'll let it slide. Since I wanted my guest to experience the different options we also ordered some Lamb Curry. It was on par with the rest of the meal, the lamb was a little dry but the curry itself was pretty good and well spiced. Now, please understand I've been a bit spoiled having had meals prepared by friends actually from the Asian Subcontinent and I'm temporarily living in NYC where Indian restaurants are plentiful and thanks to Yelp I only frequent the ones with the high reviews. So that's why I say I've experienced better. I now feel compelled to check out the other Indian restaurants around Buffalo, but I won't dissuade people from Star of India. The prices were good, the food was delicious (by the way the Naan was very good, we were given one piece for two of us but we never asked for more either), but you're just as well getting something from the menu as opting for the buffet. read more

Dark and depressing decor. The tables and chairs look like banquet hall rejects. Everything is red. Wayyy too much red. Horribly cheesy wall hangings belong in a Bombay landfill. Food tastes good although it's very watery. Love the daal. Everything else is just alright. Service is good and the buffet is well priced (7.99). They didn't remove the plates from the table when we went up to get more food- something I found very irritating because the dishes were piling up on our table. Having just moved here, we were happy to find multiple Indian places to choose from. We went here for the lunch buffet and it was pretty good. If we were in the bay area I would only give it two stars because there is some stiff competition... I thought all there food was okay. They use a lot of ghee and some things are heavy on the salt. You really had to hunt for paneer in the sag paneer. I also thought the lassi I got tasted icky. But the folks are nice and there is a nice variety on the buffet. Very good chai. This is not a place with a lot of ambiance so if I wasn't getting the buffet, I'd probably order to go. read more

I've ordered takeout from here for the last few weeks and it's been great every time All of the vegetarian Pakora are delicious but my favorite is the vegetable one. The mixture of the shredded vegetables and the chickpea flour is perfect. Sometimes places like this vary their levels of spice depending on who is cooking. Here, medium is always medium and that's something I like that I can count on. (The Saag Paneer is perfect done medium.) The service here is quick and efficient. We went in for a sit down meal and were immediately seated. Complimentary lentil soup was brought out to us as soon as we placed our order. The food arrived very hot to our table. I really enjoyed my takeout experience at India Star. I got the tofu masala and paneer naan, both of which I really liked. The food tasted like home cooking, but in the best way possible; it was a tasty, comforting dish. The only thing I would change is that next time I'm going to order the "hot" level of spice instead of medium, since it wasn't as spicy as I would've liked (however, I'm a bit of a spice fiend, so I don't know if it's just my personal perception). The food at Star of India is phenomenal. I absolutely adore their Chicken Tikka Masala (which you can ask for light cream, if you so desire) as well as their Chicken Tikka Dinner and their Saag Ala. Their garlic naan is to die for! And their portions are definitely for more than one. I also love their Mango Lassi as a sweet yet healthy treat The staff is so kind and willing to help with whatever order specialty you may have. Do attend their dinner buffets to sample their delicious entrees as well as their teas and rice pudding! The *only* problem I have is the packing of the chicken tikka dinner because sometimes the delicious juices leak out of the container--not by much but it shows the through the cardboard bag and is a small cleanup. My wife and I ate here for the first time several days ago. We really enjoyed the food. The veggie pakora were great: zesty, not too greasy, with a great mix of chickpea batter and veggie. Chicken Madrasi and Sag Paneer were great. They were nicely spiced and flavorful. The garlic nan was terrific. The bottom crust was crispy and toasted. The top was soft and pillowy. There were a few detractors. We went mid week and the dining room was cold, empty, and eerily quiet. We found ourselves reflexively whispering and shivering. The mango lassi had this powered mix graininess. I'm guessing they have a mango power they add to the regular lassi. It tasted fine, but could have used a bit more mixing. We're definitely returning. We only wish it was in better range for takeout. read more
